Celtic Cross borrowed from Into the Mystic. The Celtic Cross is an ancient pre-Christian design that shows the Cardinal points of the Solstices and Equinoxes, a fitting image for the Cardinal Drama that is playing out in the skies right now.

The planetary intensity is beginning to ramp up, and if you haven't already seen my article on this subject that provides an overview of the next couple of years please take a look. The period around the Summer Solstice and the lunar eclipse on June 26th will be particularly powerful.

As June begins, there is a great deal of planetary energy that is urging change and evolution. We are being forced to pay attention to areas in our life where we have been too lax, and at the same time we are inspired to move forward and change the things that need to be changed and transformed. Any wounded areas in our hearts and minds that may be holding us back from our spiritual growth are emerging into our awareness so that we can breathe deeply and release them.

Saturn and Neptune have both changed direction - Saturn has turned direct (forward) and Neptune has turned retrograde (backward). Saturn is creating pressure to wake up to reality, and Neptune is calling us beyond the material world. Uranus has changed signs, moving into fiery Aries, and Jupiter moves into Aries on the 7th. Both form a square to Ceres on the 6th-7th. These two planets demand expansion and radical new ways of thinking about our life. Finally, Chiron is stationary at zero degrees Pisces. The stages of healing the soul are evolving in a new direction, but before that occurs, with Chiron retrograding on the 4th, we have to revisit the old wounds before moving forward.

During the first week of June Ceres is very active, and because Ceres represents our connection to the earth and to our own bodies, the physical manifestation of our life on earth, this affects us deeply personally. A sextile from Ceres to Chiron on June 2nd helps to facilitate the healing of our relationship to our bodies and the planet, but Uranus is approaching a challenging square to Ceres that peaks on the 6th, followed by a square from Jupiter as it enters Aries. The combination of Jupiter and Uranus, especially in Aries, is bombastic and somewhat overconfident - seeking change (sometimes only for the sake of change itself). There is a desire to put ourselves first and we are dealing with primal needs here which are not always the wisest of motivations. A brief opposition from Mars (energy and drive) to Neptune (soul and spirit) could create some confusion and possibly be somewhat discouraging for a day or two.

With all of this energy swirling about we may find that we lack the focus that we need to move forward with our goals and intentions. This may be somewhat frustrating, but it's important now to clarify the vision before taking action. Once this energy has settled down we can begin to put our vision into more concrete form.

Jupiter will turn retrograde in July but will remain in Aries until September at which point it will complete its passage through Pisces, re-entering Aries in January of 2011. Throughout this period Jupiter and Uranus will remain locked in a conjunction (the exact conjunction is June 8th), separating no more than about three degrees from each other. Jupiter instills confidence and a sense of expanded possibilities, and Uranus inspires new awakenings within us that fill our minds with new ideas for improving our lives and the lives of others. This combination of planets can be thrilling and bring excitement into our lives, especially in June and July when the conjunction occurs in Aries. In September and October the conjunction moves back into Pisces and at that point ideas and excitement will no longer be enough - a connection to Spirit will take center stage.

Mars changes signs on June 6, entering Virgo where it will remain until the end of July. Mars in Virgo, an earth sign of order and routine, will help us to ground the exciting power of Jupiter and Uranus in Aries. In Virgo Mars seeks a more practical approach to our lives, so after June 6 planning and organization will become much easier AND more important.

On the 7th Mars forms a harmonious trine to Ceres which changes signs the same day, retrograding back into expansive Sagittarius where we are inspired to care for ourselves and others (Ceres) through expanding our knowledge and wisdom about the world around us. Ceres will remain in Sagittarius until October.

Mercury (mental functioning) forms a harmonious trine to Saturn on June 8, the day that Jupiter and Uranus conjoin in the sky. Mercury transits typically last less than a day and are usually not very notable, but Mercury is very active over the next few days. The trine to Saturn on the 8th helps us to harness our ideas in a way that easily manifests into form. A challenging square to Neptune on the 9th could create difficulties in business matters and other forms of communication, but on the 10th Mercury enters Gemini, harmonizing with both Jupiter and Uranus, bringing new insights and excitement into the picture.

For the next few weeks with Mercury in its own sign of Gemini the mental realm is activated, helping ideas to flow smoothly and aiding our ability to adapt to new circumstances. This process is facilitated by the Gemini New Moon on June 12th. The New Moon phase offers an opportunity for a new beginning, and in Gemini this opportunity takes us into the mental realm where we experiment with new ideas and ways of living our life before actually manifesting these ideas into form.

This New Moon is squared by Saturn, the Lord of Form and Structure, suggesting that there will be some struggle at this New Moon to reconcile the practical aspects of the thought forms we create at this time. But a harmonious sextile from Venus to Saturn which is exact at the New Moon helps us to link the creative force within us (Venus) to our desire to achieve and manifest (Saturn), and a harmonious sextile from Neptune to Ceres can reveal more completely the thread between our spiritual world (Neptune) and the world around us (Ceres).

The Jupiter/Uranus conjunction makes a powerful addition to this lunar chart and encourages us to expand our usual range of thinking. If our conceptualization of our life is too narrow, we can never be free and under this lunar influence there is tremendous potential to unlock the doors of our own mental prison. However, Pluto forms a challenging square to Jupiter and Uranus in the lunar chart which suggests that we will have to confront our inner fears (Pluto) before this emergence into freedom can occur.

We may also have to confront our own lack of self-care with a challenging square from Saturn to Ceres that is moving into alignment (culminating on June 16th). If we pay attention to any area of our life where we are ignoring the needs of our physical body as well as our emotional world and work to make improvements there, we will sail through this planetary event with ease.

Venus enters Leo on June 14th, bringing a new ability to achieve joy in our relationships. Relationships are more important for a few weeks, and a harmonious trine to Uranus on the 14th and Jupiter on the 15th helps us to breathe new life into any of our relationships that have become stale. A harmonious trine from Mars to Pluto helps to energize (Mars) and empower (Pluto) us in everything that we undertake for a few days.

The chart for the Summer Solstice serves to accelerate the intense energy of the Cardinal Drama that astrologers have been writing of for quite some time. At the Solstice the Sun enters the sign of Cancer, and with the Sun at zero degrees Cancer it is exactly square to Uranus at zero degrees Aries and very tightly square to Jupiter as well at 1 degree Aries. Pluto is in opposition at 4 degrees Capricorn. Saturn is at 28 degrees Virgo, less than two degrees from an exact square to the Solstice Sun and opposition to Jupiter and Uranus.

What all of this means is that we have a powerful symbol for a shift of energy, the Solstice Sun, setting off the Cardinal T-square alignment which is likely to result in the illumination (Sun) of any area of our global life that is dying away and needs to be destroyed. Pluto, the lord of destruction and regeneration, is a powerful player in this drama and ensures that only that which is already dying will be removed from the picture. Fortunately, Chiron is in a harmonious trine to the Sun, providing healing where necessary as we surrender the past in order to move into a new future.

If these planets are aspecting our personal chart this drama will play out more intensely for us personally, but this is a major alignment of energy that is affecting everyone on the planet to some degree. When planets are in challenging alignments like this it becomes crucial to balance their energies and internalize all of the varying forces. So we have Saturn, the force for stability. Pluto, the force for total transformation. Jupiter and Uranus, the force for liberation and change. And the Solstice Sun shines with its full force, providing illumination and the opportunity to be fully present in consciousness. An old proverb says, "Turn your face to the Sun and the shadows fall behind you." A certain degree of surrender is necessary here, but we remain the co-creators of our destiny. In order to achieve the full force of our own power we must face the shadows within us with courage and kindness.

Over the next few days Mercury is very active which will help us to integrate on a mental level all that we are experiencing. Mercury can be a shapeshifter as well, and its influence can help us to move in and out of situations more quickly as we try on new ways of thinking about ourselves and our world. When Mercury enters the sign of Cancer on the 25th it will begin to interact with the Cardinal planets and force us to change our thought patterns in order to adapt to the shifting forces around us.

All of this leads up to the Full Moon eclipse on June 26th, occurring at 4 degrees Capricorn in an exact conjunction to Pluto. This will be a powerful event and the climax of the Cardinal Drama. At the Full Moon the Sun is exactly opposite the Moon, and both the Sun and the Moon, as well as Mercury, are in tight aspect with Jupiter, Uranus, Pluto and Saturn. Seven out of eleven planets (I include Chiron here) are aligned at this time. I could break down each one of these aspects and describe them individually, but that would just create confusion. Suffice it to say that under these influences we are being realigned at every level.

This will not be easy, but It would be a mistake to allow fear to rule us at this time. Our world is in a state of terrible dysfunction and a rebalancing is necessary. I personally believe that this will be a very challenging summer for the financial systems, making this a good time to be prudent and cautious and avoid making reckless financial decisions. On a more personal level we may find ourselves facing our inner fears and it may seem as though we are backsliding in our personal journey. Nothing is further from the truth - these fears and areas of discomfort are emerging now so that they can be seen for the shadows that they are rather than the experiences of reality that we believe them to be.

The planetary events in June will teach us, if we allow them to, what is real and true in our lives and what is illusion. In order to achieve this we need to accelerate our spiritual practice and learn to maintain presence and breathe through any situation that we encounter. The flow of breath through our bodies is the anchor that links us to our higher self and assists in the transition into the higher realms.

In my opinion, this month is the peak of the intensity. Let's approach it as an opportunity to break through barriers of mind and body, and to allow our higher selves and guides to facilitate real transformation now. Once the initial transition is complete and we are more attuned to the intense energy that is shifting now, additional changes will come more easily and with greater ease and appreciation.
