The big news as we enter the first of November is of course the election in the United States. This election has great importance not only for Americans but for the global community as well. The astrology for the election is very complicated and includes the first exact hit of an opposition between Saturn (the old way) and Uranus (the new way). You’ll find more information about the astrology of election day here, and more about the opposition between Saturn and Uranus here.

November begins with a change of direction for Neptune which has been retrograde since May. The outer planets all retrograde for a good part of every year which gives us an opportunity to look back and go over areas of our life where change and improvement are needed. Because Neptune rules our connection to Spirit as well as our imagination and creativity, when retrograde we tend to let go of logic and operate from a more purely instinctive stance. Neptune in direct motion releases us to begin to express our creativity in a more external way.

Once Neptune turns direct the only planet in retrograde motion will be Uranus. It’s rare for only one planet to be retrograde and signifies that progress and change will come much more quickly and easily now.

On November 3 Venus, planet of relating and beauty, will face off in a square to both Saturn and Uranus. Venus transits only last a day or two, but because this is a time of major planetary shifts the Venus event will take on a bit more significance than it would normally have. Venus is in Sagittarius now where it seeks freedom and increased personal satisfaction, and the squares to Saturn (restriction) and Uranus (liberty and autonomy) create tension and an urge to break away from any connections to others that feel confining. Relationships will have to realign at this time in order to adapt to the changes that are occurring on every level of consciousness now.

The day after the Venus squares (November 4) we also see a square of Mars to Neptune which can bring an eruption of unconscious (Neptune) anger (Mars) that is inhibited from direct expression because of the Neptune qualities of confusion and subterfuge. Fortunately we are assisted by a sextile (harmonious aspect) from Mercury to Pluto which will focus (Pluto) our mind (Mercury) and zoom in on what is really important. Mercury also enters Scorpio the same day, and since Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, this is a “double whammy” of intense mental acuity and deepening of our understanding.

On the 5th Venus will form a sextile (harmonious aspect) to Neptune which will soften some of the damage caused by the challenges of the previous day. However, the fallout from the Mars/Neptune dynamic will take a few days to unwind but then there will be a few quiet days with little planetary activity. A sextile from Jupiter (abundance and optimism) to Uranus (innovation and insight) is beginning to form at this time which will start to excite us with new ideas and thoughts for the future.

Venus conjuncts Pluto on November 12, intensifying (Pluto) relationships (Venus), heightening our passion, and increasing our desire for attachment. Venus enters Capricorn the following day and the passion for autonomy and freedom from the Venus events of early November will ease and responsibility and commitment becomes the primary motivator of our dealings with others.

The sextile from Jupiter to Uranus perfects on November 13, just in time for the Taurus Full Moon. This is a powerful Full Moon that incorporates a Grand Trine in Earth that includes the Moon, Jupiter in Capricorn and Saturn in Virgo within a two-degree orb. Grand Trines are harmonious aspects that facilitate personal satisfaction and an easy and relaxed experience. By themselves they can lead to self-indulgence and complacency, but in this lunation the Grand Trine includes the opposition from the Sun to the Moon that produces the Full Moon and turns the Grand Trine into a Kite formation. The Kite is a more dynamic aspect because it contains an opposition aspect (Sun/Moon in this case) as well as the Grand Trine which helps to energize the planets towards positive change.

The Sun/Moon opposition of this Full Moon also forms a T-square to Chiron and Neptune, all in fixed signs. The T-square is a stressful combination that creates a crisis that encourages action to relieve the crisis. In this case the crisis will involve the eruption into consciousness (Full Moon) of unhealed wounds (Chiron) that may have been driven into the subconscious (Neptune). The Chiron/Neptune combination also signifies an increase of personal wisdom that can be accessed directly by the power of the Full Moon. The fixed signs resist change which will hold back the evolutionary process somewhat unless we remain aware to relax into the process and allow the magic to unfold.

The blend of the harmonious Grand Trine and the stressful T-square creates a powerhouse of interactions that is lubricated by the Trines for maximum benefit. The Taurus Full Moon focuses on earthly pleasure, material security and financial stability. There is a love of nature and the beauty of the natural world. Taurus is a fertile sign and can nurture our creativity and add pleasure to our relationships.

Mercury is very active over the next few days, creating a great deal of physical movement and mental acuity. First it will square Chiron on the 14th, creating mental tension (Mercury) over emotional hurts (Chiron) and perhaps intensifying our reactions in conversation and debate. On the 16th Mercury forms harmonious relationships with Uranus (trine), Jupiter and Saturn (both sextiles) which will provide a sudden (Uranus) release from the emotional baggage and encourage us with a more expansive (Jupiter) and organized (Saturn) mental process.

Mercury will square Neptune on November 17th which will diminish the positive thought process of the previous day somewhat although the effects will linger for a day or two. The square of Mercury to Neptune will encourage flights of fantasy and illusion and make it more difficult for us to understand clearly what is being said by others. However, Mars leaves the intense sign of Scorpio that same day, entering Sagittarius which encourages a lighter and more jovial (Sag) way to release our aggressions (Mars).

Over the next few days Jupiter will be approaching a trine (harmonious aspect) to Saturn. This is a wonderful aspect that we’ll begin to experience around the 10th of November, and its effect will remain for a few days after the exact trine on the 21st. Jupiter is expansive and encourages us to be optimistic and joyful, and Saturn on its best days helps us to create effective structures in our life that serve us and assist in our success. When these two planets are working together there are tremendous opportunities for manifesting our intentions and desires, so take advantage of this time!!

Mercury enters Sagittarius on the 23rd which augments the expansive energy of the Jupiter/Saturn trine. Sagittarius is not particularly disciplined though, so under its influence our mental functioning (Mercury) may be less acute than usual.

The end of the month brings us two other major shifts, including Pluto’s re-entry into Capricorn on November 26. You may want to read my earlier article on Pluto in Capricorn, because this is a major planetary event and I won’t duplicate that information here. Pluto changes signs only ever 13-18 years (depending on where it is in its orbit) and in Capricorn is will work to transform the structures on which we build our society.

Uranus changes direction on the 27th. Uranus is known for its ability to bring sudden reversals, and when it changes direction that tendency becomes even more pronounced. Issues of personal freedom and liberty will be highlighted, and rebellious tendencies could be exacerbated now.

This occurs just as the lunar cycle completes and begins again with a New Moon in Sagittarius, so the strong Uranian energy for radical behavior and change is incorporated into the effect of the New Moon. The New Moon is suited for this, because New Moons are times of new beginnings as we begin a new lunar cycle.

This New Moon includes a tight conjunction (within 3 degrees) of the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Mars in Sagittarius, packing a huge Sagittarian wallop. Sagittarius seeks to expand our understanding and sense that life has meaning; under the Sagittarian influence we are optimistic and carefree and dislike restrictions and limitations of any kind. Combined with the power of Uranus changing direction, this is a time for personal revolution and breaking free of anything that confines us. Fortunately Jupiter and Venus are both in responsible Capricorn which will hold us back somewhat, but be aware that if there is any area in your life which is creating resentment you will be painfully aware of it at this time. Let this be a new beginning of a personal freedom that incorporates a responsibility to our commitments (Jupiter/Venus in Capricorn).

The New Moon energy will still be in effect on November 28 when Venus forms a sextile to Uranus, facilitating the liberation of the New Moon in a way that is positive rather than destructive. Mercury also conjuncts Mars that day, sharpening our mental focus and giving us the mental energy we need for writing or other mental pursuits. We have more positive Mars energy available to us with a trine to Saturn on the 29th, so this last week of November helps us to be organized and effective in all that we do!
