A Pope for the Uranus/Pluto square

Pope Francis astrologyAs you know if you’ve been reading the astrological news in the past few years, we are now in the waning phase of a square aspect (90 degrees) between Uranus and Pluto.  You can read more about this phase in the sidebar of this blog if this concept is new to you, and you may want to catch up on this post about the Uranus/Pluto square from last year detailing the news events that correlate with this cycle.

One such event was the resignation of Pope Benedict in 2013.  Not only was he the first pope to resign since 1415, he was replaced by Pope Francis who himself is a walking representative of the square between Uranus in Aries (individual liberty and personal revolution) and Pluto in Capricorn (the breakdown of the structures upon which our society is built).  Benedict was a traditionalist and saw homosexuality as an “intrinsic moral evil.”  He was a strict doctrinarian and resisted any kind of liberal reform, thereby representing the Capricorn adherence to the structures of traditional morals and rules.  He insulted Islam, promoted a holocaust-denying bishop, and equated the ordination of women with sexual abuse. Journeys with Mars and the Uranus/Pluto square

I’m finishing up the Planetary Illuminations report, but I wanted to give you a heads up on this important cycle.

You can read in the sidebar about the square aspect between Uranus and Pluto that has been creating intensity, drama and change since the two planets first came together back in 2011 (their first meeting was just a degree from exactitude, but close enough to pack a punch).  The sixth exact square is in mid-December, but during November they will be moving closer and closer to the exact alignment that will likely foster even more breakdown (Pluto) and realignment (Uranus).

As Mars travels through Capricorn it will align with Pluto and form a challenging square to Uranus.  By November 5th Mars will be close enough to Pluto that we will start to feel it in earnest, and the exact conjunction will take place November 10th. Mars represents the anger and passion of the individual, where Pluto represents a transformational force that destroys and rebuilds.  These two planets together are a formidable force that will energize but also inspire us to purge and eliminate anything from our life that no longer works.

At the same time, Mars will be in a square to Uranus.  Uranus is the radical – the innovator and the one which shatters paradigms.  It will be difficult to resist realignment and change under this combination of influences.  The exact square from Mars to Uranus occurs November 12th.  The Moon moves through Cancer during this same period, and when a Grand Cross forms on November 10th we are likely to see a climax of intensity and passion that breaks apart anything in our lives that is brittle and dying, and urge us to embrace the new.

This is really a time of letting go to our attachment to what we think is true and those things to which we have become accustomed.  This is a Brave New World, as Aldous Huxley wrote, and in order to move through the portal to the future the past must be surrendered.

“Impulse arrested spills over, and the flood is feeling, the flood is passion, the flood is even madness: it depends on the force of the current, the height and strength of the barrier. The unchecked stream flows smoothly down its appointed channels into a calm well being.”

A look back at the astrology of 2013

Salon posted an article the other year entitled “The year in Misery, 2013.”

As a year marked by revelation (and authoritarian attempts to quash revelation), 2013 was a big year for misery — making known and felt our troubling state of current of affairs.

This quote accurately describes one aspect of the intense square (90 degree) aspect between Uranus and Pluto that has been driving the global astrology since 2011.  Uranus in Aries breaks down the status quo and creates a desire for change and revolution, and Pluto in Capricorn breaks down power structures that are corroding from the inside, while consolidating power at the same time.  It’s a big cocktail of breakdown and regeneration that can be extremely unsettling.

In fact, the Misery Index reached a peak in 2011, the highest point since Reagan was in office in the early 1980s.  Since 2011 the Misery Index has continued to decrease, but we are not out of the woods yet.

Under the Uranus/Pluto square we have seen the revelations of Wikileaks and Edward Snowden, civil liberties violations and the killing of Trayvon Martin, bombings and school shootings, typhoons and earthquakes, civil war in Egypt, Syria and the Sudan, the first resignation of a sitting pope in hundreds of years.  But we have also seen the election of a new and amazingly progressive pope, technological advances (Uranus) such as 3D printers and Google glass, and revolutionary cultural events such as the  unprecedented number of films made by and starting African Americans.

2013 marked the peak of this Uranus/Pluto cycle and here’s no doubt that 2013 was a difficult and challenging year for many people on a personal level as well.  This process of deconstructing one’s life and having to rebuild it again from scratch can be extremely upsetting and astrology cannot provide the answers.  In my own practice some clients have become frustrated that I can’t tell them “when will it stop.”

I can only encourage them to change their perspective – to look through the distress and anxiety and try to let go of the hold they have on their hopes and shattered dreams and allow the new reality to take root and flower.  This requires tremendous trust, and after years of challenge it can be difficult to find that faith that when the storm is over the day will dawn again.  This has been a particularly challenging five years that began when Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008 and began the deconstruction process over the structures that provide the very foundation of our lives.

What we often fail to realize, though, is that our lives are often rooted in shifting sand, like a house at the beach that is built too close to the ocean and is eventually swallowed into the sea.  These challenging astrological periods force us to rebuild a stronger foundation that may be less romantic and idealistic, but which we can depend on to support us throughout the rest of our lives.

2013 has had some very supportive astrological alignments as well: Saturn harmonizing with Pluto to aid in the reconstruction process; both Saturn and Pluto harmonizing with Chiron to facilitate healing and understanding.  A trine from Jupiter to Saturn has lubricated the wheels of the financial system which is helping to improve the lives of many.

The fourth exact aspect of the Uranus/Pluto square occurred last month, in November of 2013.  We have crested the wave, and having survived the crisis we are adjusting to the new reality and building new structures to support ourselves in new ways.  That is not to say that it won’t be difficult, especially in the spring of 2014  (stay tuned for my 2014 forecast), but we will be rebuilding and adapting to the change.

Uranus square Pluto Part Four: The cycle so far

Uranus-PlutoToday marks the fourth phase in the dynamic square (90 degree) alignment between Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn.  The conflict between individual self-expression (Uranus in Aries) and the power establishment and need for control (Pluto in Capricorn) has been seen in virtually every area of our personal lives as well as the landscape of the world political arena.  (See the sidebar for all dates)

Although the first exact event took place in June of 2012, Uranus and Pluto came within just a few degrees of exactitude back in 2011 so this dance has really been going on for over two years during which time we can see the Uranus/Pluto conflict of revolution and power imbalance played out in the news:

  • Osama bin Laden was killed by the US.
  • South Sudan splits off from Sudan
  • The Arab Spring of rebellion and revolution sweeps across the middle east
  • Occupy Wall Street protests spread throughout the US
  • Muammar Qaddafi is killed and the Libyan civil war revolutionaries take over the country.

  • Civil war in Mali ousts the sitting president and Azawad secedes from Mali.
  • The “God Particle” is discovered (radical new idea (Uranus) that explodes conventional thinking (Capricorn)).
  • Hurricanes, typhoons and earthquake create significant damage

  • North Korea undergoes several missile tests
  • The most powerful meteor in over a century explodes in Russia
  • Pope Benedict resigns (first pope to resign since 1415).
  • He is replaced by Pope Francis, who is a walking Uranus Pluto square himself, exploding  paradigms of Catholic thought.
  • Edward Snowden exposes US surveillance secrets
  • Egyptian president Morsi is deposed in a coup
  • The US Republican Party splits into at least two ideological camps and struggles to find a new identity.

And we’re just in the middle of the cycle.  One thing is clear: this Uranus Pluto square is having the effect of breaking through patterns of negativity and repression in order to awaken the sleeping urge for liberation and freedom.

Today’s Uranus/Pluto square #4 is supported by harmonious aspects which will help to facilitate the surrender and letting go that is required before the new energy can effect transformation and liberate us from the ideas and patterns that hold us back.  The Sun harmonizes with Chiron and Pluto today, illuminating the power of healing (Chiron) energy that softens hard edges, and assisting in the process of elimination (Pluto) that is required when old ways of thought and feeling must die away.

The Sun and Mercury conjoin today, and while traditional astrologers called this “combust” and believed that the Sun weakened the influence of Mercury I have not seen this to be true.  The light of the Sun opens up our eyes so that we can see and think (Mercury) more clearly  – our ability to understand is quickened and enhanced by the light of the Sun.

This will help prepare us for the Scorpio eclipse coming up in a few days.  Stay tuned!

Jupiter square Uranus, opening wide the doors of liberation

If-You-Change-Nothing-Nothing-Will-ChangeWe are currently in the midst of a major planetary cycle: the square from Uranus to Pluto.  If this concept is new to you, please see the abbreviated explanation in the sidebar of this site.

Jupiter formed an exact square to Uranus last week, the first of three exact alignments that will amplify the shifting tides in our personal lives as well as on the world stage that are creating the necessity for a complete overhaul (Uranus in Aries) of the very foundation of our lives (Pluto in Capricorn).  With a total of seven exact alignments spanning a period of nearly five years, this planetary cycle is like a hurricane of energy that will strip us of the aspects of our lives that are already in decay (Pluto) and encourage us to refine our lives so that they more authentically reflect who we truly are (Uranus).

Now here comes Jupiter, interacting first with Pluto earlier in August and now Uranus.  Jupiter brings confidence to one’s ventures; it dislikes restrictive boundaries and desires to  expand beyond them.  Jupiter and Uranus are both freedom planets but they behave differently astrologically.  Jupiter is a personal planet, so it represents the internal urge to grow and learn and to live a life that has real meaning for us.  As a transpersonal planet, Uranus inspires us to drop any artifice and react against restriction that keeps us from being authentic and true to ourselves.  When these two interact in the sky, especially in a strong aspect such as the square (90 degree) aspect, the pressure for liberation becomes powerful and impossible to ignore.

Warning: geeky astrological details ahead.  The next exact alignment between Uranus and Pluto occurs November 1 2013, but Jupiter will begin to “translate” that alignment in early 2014 when it first opposes Pluto on January 31st and then squares Uranus on February 26th.   On April 20th and 21st all three planets come together in an exact T-square alignment.

Back to the rest of my readers! The period between January and the end of April 2014 will be extremely significant and offer a tremendous portal for letting go of anything that is not working in your life.  Change is easier for some of us than for others – it requires a great deal of trust that the change will in fact be beneficial.  For many of us the old is familiar and feels safe – even though it may be horrific, it is what we know.  It is exactly  these situations that this kind of planetary cycle is intended for – to force us, despite our desperate attempts to cling to the rotting fabric of the past, to move forward into a brighter future.
