Mercury in Aries

How to succeed during Mercury retrograde, April 9 through May 3 2017

mercury retrogradeSometimes it seems like we are in a permanent Mercury retrograde period, doesn’t it?  Under Mercury retrograde communication snafus are common and often equipment that we rely on fails to work properly.

I like to think of Mercury retrograde periods as being the ebb tide.  Life doesn’t always move in forward motion – like the tide, there are periods where events rush us towards the shore and other times when we look to the past and must take a step backwards in order to find completion or master a certain issue.

Consequently, Mercury retrograde times are good for re-flection and for finding new wisdom in situations from the past; for re-decorating, re-designing, re-thinking. They are usually not great times to start something new, but we can’t always design our lives around the three weeks, four times a year in which Mercury is retrograde.

Mercury is in the fixed and somewhat stubborn sign of Taurus right now where it adapts well to the lack of forward motion.  However, when Mercury retrogrades back into fiery Aries where it will remain between April 20th and May 15th we will be at the mercy of two opposing forces: the urge of Aries to take dynamic and impulsive action combined with the retrograde tendency to take two steps backward for every step forward.  This will be exacerbated by the fact that throughout this period Mercury will unite with reckless Uranus.  Under this influence there tends to be a lot of impulsive behavior and action as well as words thrown about without too much thought.  Travel is likely to be disrupted and a fair amount of chaos can ensue if we fail to pay attention. However, this planetary dynamic also bestows new ways of looking at our world as well as fresh insights.  Life will certainly be more exciting during this time!

We will find all of this easier and more enjoyable if we allow ourselves to let go and enjoy the ride.  Between now and May 15th it will be difficult to keep a tight control over events and situations, but the hidden gifts of surprising new adventures are just around the corner.

Mercury turns direct today!

Mercury direct 2012When Mercury is retrograde all kinds of chaos can ensue and this is the one astrological factor that more than any other single one helps to convince the skeptic about the validity of astrology. This Mercury retrograde period was likely more difficult for many of us because Mercury began the retrograde journey in Aries.  Aries is all about moving forwards – as quickly and with as little thought as possible.  So Mercury in Aries really resists that forced turn backwards of the retrograde, and on the journey it slipped back into Pisces where things may have become a bit confused.  What actually was happening, of course, was that intuition (Pisces) was taking a front seat to intellect, but that’s not always an easy transition to make. All retrogrades do serve their purpose, and these are times to look back over anything that needs revision or re-imagining.  But with Mercury turning direct we will begin to turn our attention once again to the future, and those pesky breakdowns of communication (Mercury) equipment are likely to diminish.  Mercury will re-enter Aries on the 16th, just after Mars (ruler of Aries) turns direct after a long retrograde period itself.  At that point we will likely feel that we are being shot out of a cannon, like a rubber band that has been pulled to its maximum before being released.

Mercury retrograde, March 30 – April 23 2011

Mercury retrogradeMercury turns retrograde today, taking us into three weeks of reconsideration and re-evaluation with potential communication and equipment glitches.  Mercury is in Aries during this retrograde, and since Aries is the sign of action and initiation it’s not too happy when it has to look backwards and review rather than take direct action.

Retrograde periods serve a function that goes beyond creating problems in our lives: they are opportunities for do-overs.  If you didn’t get something right the first time, this is a chance to go back and do it over again.  It’s a time for reassessing our priorities, for reviewing the things we have done and the plans we have set in motion.

While it’s generally true that contracts signed and decisions made when Mercury is retrograde often require renegotiation and revision, we can’t always put our lives on hold for three weeks.  Sometimes we have to begin a job or sign an important contract when Mercury is retrograde, in which case it’s helpful to know that communication problems are likely and be prepared for that.  If you CAN avoid starting something new when Mercury is retrograde it makes life easier, but life isn’t always about things being easy.  Life urges us to grow and evolve, and along the way we will encounter bumps on the road.

Mercury retrograde periods are excellent for reassessing the past, for redoing your plans, for looking back at your goals to see where they can be realigned with your present reality and hopes for the future.  It’s a time to gather your resources so that you can emerge at the end of the retrograde with a new confidence and with improved resources.

Mercury in Aries April 16-May 5

from the Elemental Tarot: ” The classical figure of Mercury dashes across an urban landscape. In the sky the sun is a compass indicating the ultimate in creative possibilities and the multitude of directions in which he can travel. “

Mercury has moved from Pisces into Aries, and issues of communication and mental functioning (Mercury) now take on the fiery energy of the sign of Aries. Having just come through the explosive opposition of Mars to Pluto which forced confrontations and released a sudden aggressive force over the past couple of weeks, we will find some relief in the fresh innocence and simplicity of the Aries Mercury.

Aries is the sign of initiation as we have noted, and Mercury’s travel through Aries brings with it an excitement over new ways of thinking. Ideas that may have previously been kept within us have an opportunity to be expressed as there is now a sense of courage (Aries) in communication (Mercury) that may have been missing before.

Mercury in Aries can bring an environment conducive to argument and disagreements (since Aries is ruled by Mars, the god of war), but over the next few weeks as Mercury travels through Aries it will make several beneficial contacts with other planets that will soften this effect. Today and tomorrow Mercury makes a trine to Saturn in Leo, lending stability to the fire of expression and grounding (Saturn) us, enabling us to build bridges (Saturn) through communication (Mercury). On the 22-24 of April, Mercury will harmonize (sextile aspect) with Chiron, offering a new way to conceptualize (Mercury) the healing of old wounds (Chiron). On April 28-30, Mercury will sextile Neptune, soothing the rough edges and bringing imagination and a sense of divine inspiration (Neptune). And on May 2-4, just before moving into Taurus, Mercury will trine Pluto, offering the ability to see beyond the superficial and effect true transformation.
