Pallas and gender issues: The astrology of Stephen Beatty

Actor Warren Beatty recently addressed his transgender son Stephen for the first time, putting Stephen in the headlines and bringing him to my attention.  For some time now I’ve been writing that the emergence of transgendered persons such as Chaz Bono into a more mainstream presence is connected with the transition into the Aquarian age.

Stephen Ira Beatty was born Kathryn Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Benning.  Stephen Ira came out as trans at the age of 14, which astrologically is the time when transiting SSaturn opposes Saturn in the natal chart and often sets off a sort of identity crisis or challenge.  Stephen Ira has become an active spokesperson for the transgender community and apparently identifies as a man with feminine traits rather than a straight man.  News reports from 2012 suggest that he hesitated before completing the transition surgery because he didn’t want to give up his feminine side.

Beatty’s astrological chart is fascinating.  His Capricorn Sun gives him a desire to work hard and find success, but it is in a tight conjunction to Neptune (blurring the boundaries) which often confuses the identity when aligned with the Sun (Self) and to Uranus (shattering paradigms), the planetary ruler of the Aquarian age.  This Solar conjunction enjoys a harmonious trine from Jupiter (confidence) which no doubt has helped him to traverse the difficult waters of his complicated personal identity.

There is an indication of emotional pain in a stressful oppoStephen Beattysition between Saturn (tests and challenges) to Chiron (wounding and healing) that denotes an individual with a more intense level of emotional wounds that others have and the necessity to heal these wounds over a lifetime.  In addition, the Black Moon Lilith is tied into that dynamic with a conjunction to Saturn that connects the soul’s earthly work to the primal feminine intuitive power.

I have noticed that the asteroid Pallas is prominent in the charts of many transgendered persons.  In mythology, Pallas Athena was born out of the head of Zeus rather than through a mother’s womb in the normal fashion.  This emergence from the mind rather than the body is significant since in a transgendered individual the identity comes from the mind rather than the physical attributes.  In Beatty’s chart, the asteroid Pallas is tightly (within 6 minutes!!) conjunct his Venus, the planet of love and attraction.

Human behavior is not predictable, and not everyone with this chart will be transgendered.  Planets express themselves somewhat differently through different people, although the basic themes will be similar.  However, it can be helpful to see the underlying dynamics behind our personalities and how we can best utilize these planetary allies to help us grow and evolve.

David Bowie, magical changeling, rest in peace

12512527_1261792600501410_721398437553426693_nart found on Facebook here.  It’s hard to believe he is gone because he seemed immortal, other worldly. He wasn’t really of this earth and seemed to slide in and out of a kaleidoscope of personalities. He awakened our imaginations and expanded our consciousness in peculiar ways that no one else had done before, nor has since.  While I wasn’t particularly a fan of David Bowie’s music, I found him irresistibly fascinating and certainly a harbinger of the Aquarian Age to come.

David Bowie was born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947 in London England.  According to the source notes at Astro.com his parents provided a birth time of 9 am GMT.  This is fascinating because it places the asteroid Pallas right on the Aquarius ascendant, the point of the chart which describes the persona of the individual.  Pallas is a symbol of androgyny and as I have written before, I find it to be quite prominent in the charts of gender-fluid individuals.

Aquarius itself is ruled by Uranus (modern ruler; the traditional ruler is Saturn).  Uranus instigates radical behavior that revolutionizes the way we view our world.  The instinct for innovation and eccentricity was particularly strong in him as was the desire to continually reinvent himself.

Pallas and John Travolta news

Homosexuality is not what it used to be.  Half a century ago, gay men and women hid their affiliation in a closely guarded cloak of secrecy.  In today’s Aquarian world where even in the US twenty states plus the District of Columbia now permit gay marriage, more and more well-known people are coming out of the closet, including even football players. But not John Travolta or Tom Cruise.  Both of these men, both Scientologists, interestingly enough, have struggled through their entire careers to keep the G word from erupting into their carefully crafted public persona.  For John Travolta, this wall between public and private will soon collapse after a judge ruled that his former pilot has the right to tell the story of their gay affair. After studying astrology for 30 years, the asteroids are finally beginning to talk to me and one of the ones who is speaking up is Pallas (sometimes also called Pallas Athena since Athena was the Greek name for the same goddess).  Pallas is often prominent in the charts of my gay clients, particularly the ones who identify as transgender.  Pallas was a female goddess, but she sprang out of the head of her father, Jupiter, so there is an asexual quality to her power.  Or more accurately, an ability to move easily between genders. In John Travolta’s chart, Pallas is exactly opposite the Sun.  This is a very powerful aspect that challenges his sense of Self (Sun).  Pallas is about six degrees away from an exact conjunction to Pluto in the chart, suggesting that there is a compulsive (Pluto) quality to this tension.  Pluto of course is also opposite the Sun, an intense configuration that demands constant transformation and evolution as well as the revelation of dark secrets and usually, powerful experiences that transform our lives completely. Travolta has been dogged not only by rumors of gay dalliances and sexual harassment but also rumors of cross-dressing .  Cross-dressing and homosexuality are two totally different things, but in both there is a blurring of gender lines. Over the past few years Travolta’s progressed chart reveals that the natal conjunction between Pallas and Pluto has become tighter and tighter, and currently it is just a few minutes away from exactitude (the exact alignment occurs December 2016).  The progressed chart reveals the patterns of our personal evolution so it’s not surprising that these Plutonian secrets are beginning to emerge. This is ultimately a good thing, because any darkness that we struggle to keep in the psyche will rot and decay and eventually needs to be purged.  Part of the Plutonian archetype is that secrets only hold power as long as they are hidden – once they are out in the Sun they begin to fade away and our true light can shine unhindered.

The Uranian Mystique

Uranus Aquarian ageI’ve been writing for some time that as we head into the Aquarian Age the idea of gender will continue to blur, and that has certainly proven to be true.  A recent article in the Daily Beast online news magazine wrote:

Are we having a trans moment? Until recently, transgender issues were nearly invisible in the mainstream press—but now, everywhere you turn, transgender stories are being told. From Andrej Pejic and Lea T, two trans models currently walking the high-fashion runways, to the outrage over Work It, the hapless, now-canceled ABC comedy featuring two men who resort to drag to get a job, transgender awareness is growing exponentially by the moment—seeping into pop culture in films like Albert Nobbs.

Take a glimpse at your TV screen, movie theater, and your iPad and you might agree. In a recent Saturday Night Liveskit, host Ben Stiller played a male passenger on an airplane. Suddenly he leans over across the woman in the middle seat and asks the unseen person sitting in the window seat, “Don’t I know you?” The camera pans to Stiller, dressed as a woman, as the words, “Get To Know Your Future Self,” flash on the screen….

The question is why is this shift happening now?

The answer, of course, is Uranus (please refrain from making scatalogical jokes here!).  Aquarius is ruled by both Saturn, the god of form and structure, and Uranus, the god of innovation and change.  As we move into the Aquarian Age we will find that the structures upon which we build our world continue to mutate and transform, giving more voice to the unusual and the individuals that don’t conform or fit into established norms.  We see this in popular culture with the popularity of Lady Gaga, who often performs as her male alter ego.  And in the fashion world, where “fashion is going transsexy.”

It’s a Brave New World, folks, and there’s no going back.

Updated!! The astrology of Chaz Bono and the Aquarian Age

Chaz Bono astrologyAt the age of 42 Chaz Bono has joined the cast of the television program “Dancing with the Stars” – an event which has caused widespread controversy and brought his recent gender reassignment surgery into the forefront of the news.

Update: Astrotheme has a 12:55 am birth time for Chaz Bono which has been identified as part of the Steinbrecher collection which is highly reliable.  I’ve edited the article to add some information based on this time of birth.

When you start to pay attention you will be amazed at how many newsmakers are in key astrological cycles.  28-29: the Saturn return.  41-42: the Uranus opposition.  So without even looking at Bono’s chart we can see that he is in the middle of a dramatic life cycle, the Uranus opposition, that inspires a radical departure from anything in his life where he is not feeling true to himself.

Chaz Bono was born as a woman named Chastity Sun Bono March 4, 1969 (time unknown) in Los Angeles, California.  His Sun is in Pisces, the sign of the shapeshifter – the one who yearns for peace, tranquility, and beauty.  Pisces is the most mutable of the water signs and like water, it tends to adapt to fit the container  in which it finds itself.   This sometimes makes it more difficult for Pisces Sun people to know with certainty who they really are.

Bono, a former lesbian, says she realized she was gay at puberty and came out to her parents at the age of 18.  I have written about the effect of Uranus in the chart in gender issues, and here we see a tight conjunction of Jupiter (representing our search for meaning) conjunct Uranus (liberation and freedom from judgment) closely aligned to his Libra South Node, suggesting that these gender issues are something that he struggled with in the past, perhaps in past lives.  The combination of Jupiter and Uranus are often found in the charts of social activists, and Bono has become a highly vocal spokesperson for the GLBT community.

The South Node system falls in the tenth house of public life in the chart, so it’s not surprising that his struggle to find his identity has played out in the public eye.  As one of my readers pointed out, Black Moon Lilith (which I am just beginning to study) is located in the seventh house of partnership and in a nearly exact square to the lunar nodes.  From what I can tell so far from what I’ve read, the Black Moon deals with primal issues of rage and abandonment, and with such a powerful story expanding the meaning of the nodal journey we would expect a vivid past life history of rage and abuse that is determined to be resolved this time around.
