The Full Moon is the culmination of the lunar cycle – from their meeting at the New Moon which forges a new beginning in a sign on the zodiac trail, the Sun and Moon move through the dance of the lunar phases.  At the first quarter phase, when the Sun squares the Moon in a 90 degree aspect, an adjustment is usually required.  At the Full Moon we have reached the culmination before the waning phase where the lunar influence of emotion and instinct opposes the solar impulse of consciousness.  At this stage, illusions must fall away and we face an important truth in the journey.  After the Full Moon, the waning phase begins where we let go of anything that is no longer needed and prepare for the new start at the next New Moon.

When the Moon is full in Aquarius, our eyes are opened to a new way of looking at the world.  Aquarius brings innovation and a need for authenticity- we become hyper aware of injustice and driven to make important changes.  The Aquarius Full Moon is opposite the Leo Sun which seeks to aggrandize and enhance the individual Self where Aquarius disdains the personal for the sake of the collective,

This  Full Moon demands detachment and awareness – there is a strongly mental quality to Aquarius (co-ruled by Uranus, the “higher octave” of Mercury as well as Saturn, its traditional ruler).  In addition, the Sun and Moon are both locked in a square to Uranus which multiplies the Uranian effect of paradigm-busting radical change. At its best Uranus frees us from the trappings of the past – it shows us where our lives have become stale and drab and opens the door to a new vision that can facilitate our transition into the new world.  But the kind of radical electrical energy can be difficult for those of us who dislike change and would like to retreat to the safety of the world we knew before.  That world, however, is disappearing under the weight of COVID-19 and most of us are having, or will have to, make extreme changes in the way we live our lives.

The traditional rulership of Aquarius by Saturn is important and not to be left behind in these modern times.  Saturn was considered the outer boundary of the known cosmic world, and it still represents the boundary of the personal and the doorway to the transpersonal.  In my work the outer planets are transformational forces, inspiring and motivating and sometimes downright forcing events which create change, and Uranus inspires us to break out of outmoded paradigms which no longer serve us.  However, Saturn’s rulership of Aquarius keeps us rooted in the material world – its role as taskmaster means that any new paradigm must fit properly into the material world.

Mars, planet of action and aggression, is in a challenging square to the expansive principle of Jupiter on the day of the Full Moon, which triggers the triple conjunction that includes Saturn and Pluto.  This suggests a certain amount of disruption and unfocused energies – perhaps even anger and rage against any oppression we are experiencing.  With Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto all in the earthy and grounded sign of Capricorn right now, everything we do must be focused and practical, helping to ground the intense energies of Mars in its own sign of Aries as it begins its dramatic assault on the Capricorn planets.

We do have some grace and ease through a few harmonious aspects as well to help soften the message.  Venus, planet of beauty and attraction, conjoins the North Node of the future to help ease our passage.  Neptune embraces the Capricorn stellium in a harmonious sextile of support and encouragement, enhancing creative applications of hard lessons. This Aquarian Full Moon asks that we use the brilliance of our higher intuition to envision a new and recharged future, while applying practical considerations to help us to maintain balance and stability.

Questions to help you to get the most out of this Full Moon:

  • Am I holding on to an idea that the future will be the same as the past?  (It won’t be.)
  • I’m beginning my life anew, from where I am today.  What does it look like?
  • How can I let go of my longings and wishes from the past and embrace the new world?
  • Is my need for a rich and abundant personal life (Leo) in balance and harmony with my desire for peace and justice in the world (Aquarius)?  If not, how can I bring my life into greater alignment?
