Friday advice column: Finding the willpower to make life changes

M.S. writes:

After years of attempting and giving it my best shot, I have not been able to reverse my diabetes because I cannot stick to the needed lifestyle changes. I have signed up for expensive programs and have had success but all too easily fall back into my old ways of enjoying food; sugary soft drinks, pastries, pastas, carbs.

I understand the ramifications of what I am doing to my body and I have had therapy about eating. I am not an overeater, I just eat the wrong things. Does my chart show when and if I will ever stick to a plan and heal my diabetes once and for all? I get emotionally depressed after I have stopped eating foods I enjoy.

When would be the best time to attempt changes again? Eating out is a joy of mine. I look forward to it every day and plan where I am going to eat sometimes weeks in advance.

Dear M.S.,

Eating healthily has become so difficult in our modern culture which presents highly palatable food that has been engineered by the food industry to be addictive to our taste buds. That said, we can learn enjoy delicious foods and still maintain a healthy lifestyle. While some charts do show a tendency towards overindulgence (my own, for example!), our astrological chart does not hold a magic key to a time when a change will occur. We need to find ways to work with our own psychology to accomplish our goals in a way that we won’t feel deprived.

Your Sun is in the sign of Cancer, and every Cancerian that I know loves food and sharing food with friends. So food is always going to be an important part of […]

How to face an uncertain future

Quite a few of you have messaged and emailed me and commented about so much pain in your personal lives.

We are all rendered a bit raw by the pandemic. Suddenly the avenues of escapism are closed to us – the methods we used to use to try to transcend our anxieties and other emotions are no longer available. So we are locked in, not only with our families and housemates, but also with ourselves. Feelings from which we used to be able to hide are now impossible to ignore.

The transit of Mars (aggression) to Chiron (emotional wounding and healing) this week has sparked a fire in which these emotions are burning us up to one extent or another. The only way out of this is to go through it. To feel the emotions. To cry, to rage, to weep and yell. These things are coming up for a reason. It’s like when you’re sick and you feel like you have to vomit but you don’t want to. You feel better when it’s over. The trick is to avoid getting stuck in those feelings and making the story the reality.  Blame will keep us stuck, but the pain that we grow through is there to teach us something.  If we focus on the pain and the negativity, that’s what will take deeper root.  If we ask the question, “how can I release this pain and change my life?” THAT is the doorway to releasing the energies of these old patterns once and for all.

Then we have Jupiter (expansion and ideology) conjunct Pluto (destruction and regeneration), and of course Saturn (tests and challenges)is in the wings.  If these three are hitting something sensitive or important in your personal chart, […]

From the advice column: I’m surrounded by malicious people

astrological adviceQ: I am really struggling against all of the odds. Lots of malicious gossips, malicious people in general that I have to live among, give treatment to and build my business, which is virtually impossible and I’m running out of money. If you can see what steps may be best for me to make regarding business or earnings that would be a great help.

A: You are what we call a “Double Capricorn” – your Sun is in Capricorn and you have Capricorn rising, so the sign of Capricorn is very strong in your chart.  The destiny of Capricorn is to master the material world, so it’s no wonder you have a craving to build your business and in fact building a business or making some kind of mark in the world is what you are meant to do.

Like all of us, you have challenges you must face in order to accomplish your goals.  While your Mars (drive and desire) is in Aries, where it is most powerful and most easily able to manifest your desires, it is opposite your very polite and sensitive Libra Moon.  Anger and confrontation likely frightens you, whether it’s coming from inside you or from someone else.  And Mars is also opposite Pluto, the planet of power and personal transformation.  Often people with Mars/Pluto dynamics in their chart experience betrayals and power conflicts in their life until they are able to stand up for what they need in their own life and develop the strength to assert themselves with confidence.  This has likely been particularly difficult over the past couple of years because Pluto in the sky has been transiting your Sun – the very essence of who you are – encouraging your […]

Astrological advice: When will Jupiter bring me my ideal relationship?

astrological adviceEach week I answer a reader question using their astrological chart.  Because this service is designed to help as many people as possible, preference is given to questions which will have benefit and interest others.  If you have a burning question you think others will share, please email me and it will be considered!

Q:
Jupiter has been transiting my seventh house since October 2017, I was expecting for a relationship to appear in my life. I was sure that just like Meghan Markle fell into Harry’s life, someone would fall into mine and vice versa. So I have been going to parties, pubs, weddings, meetings… any invitation I am saying yes (just like Jim Carrey in Yes Man movie), but nothing -besides drunk men- falls on my lap.

Jupiter is about to move to my 8th house and I am worried -frightened, indeed- that I will end up missing that experience in this life. I really want to marry and have a family of my own… but it looks like  no matter what I do, no matter where I go… I end up the same. I am up to the point where I am tired and just want to curl in my bed… I hate loud places, I hate going to parties where I am stalked by married men, I hate going to the beach to be asked by kids half my age, but I am scared that if I don’t, I will be missing this opportunity.

What are your thoughts on this? what piece of advice/light could you give me on this? Are my expectations on Jupiter wrong or too high?

A:

When I was single for about nine years after my divorce I too watched the passages of […]

From the advice column: Why have the past few years been so hard?

astrological adviceQ:

For the past 5 years, my life has had SO many problems – life and health.  Almost as if the Universe keeps saying – “But wait – am throwing THIS in your lifepath – let’s see how you handle this one.”

Financial (bankruptcy in 2013), relationships strains, and a lot of health issues/problems – 5 surgeries in different parts of my body in 5 years and just got thrown another two more that I will have to deal with in the very near future – (the plethora of medical expenses are greatly affecting our finances)

I am a good person – caring, compassionate, helpful and kind; I take care of myself – exercise, eat right and organic, no drinking, drugs and a glass or two of red wine a week –

What is it in my chart that is causing all of this and when will this start easing up?  Or, am I instead of looking at my ‘golden years’ going be be looking at my ‘lead years’?

A:

Although you say that  things have been particularly difficult in the past five years, I suspect that your life has not been easy in general.  Your chart shows an optimistic ascendant and Moon, both in Sagittarius, but difficult Saturn is putting pressure on your Sun, and Pluto (intense transformation) is a part of that dynamic as well.   Saturn and Pluto are the astrological heavyweights, so when they both conflict with the Sun it generally suggests a life where things are difficult and intense, but also very transformative.

Saturn is the apex of a “Yod” – a “finger of fate” aspect in your chart, which echoes the importance of Saturn in the chart.  Saturn is a difficult ally – he puts obstacles […]
