Pluto square Eris update and a look into the future

art by Emily Balivet

Today (August 27, 2021) is the third exact 90 degree aspect (square) between Pluto, planet of creative destruction, and the new planet Eris, planet of discord.  In Rome Eris was called Discordia – she is the goddess who, when not invited to a wedding, began the Trojan War by throwing a golden apple marked “for the fairest” into a circle of goddesses, beginning a dispute that threw Greece into turmoil for ten years.  (Read more about the mythology of Eris here.)  In my research, the influence of the planet Eris appears to coincide with small, seemingly minor, events which create great chaos and disrupt the status quo.

This cycle of the Pluto/Eris square began in January of 2020, and is affecting the US chart rather intensely.  I don’t have to remind you how crazy the election process was in 2020, and how that craziness has continued into 2021.   The second phase of the exact alignment occurred in June 2020 along with all of the other intense planetary energies: a stellium in Capricorn that lasted for weeks, all planets retrograde, etc.   For much of the summer of 2020 the stellium in Capricorn (including Saturn, Pluto and Mars) formed a square to Eris as well.  Talk about discord!  The symbolism of Eris as the goddess who became angry when she didn’t receive a wedding invitation and retaliated by starting the Trojan War is eerily reflected in the events occurring in US politics over the past few years, as well as other events around the globe including the takeover of Afghanistan after 20 years of American efforts.

The Covid-19 virus itself seems to embody the discordant nature […]

The nature of Truth in the doorway between Pisces and Aquarius

This article was originally posted in 2013 and is reposted today in honor of Jupiter entering Pisces.  As we transition into the Aquarian Age, we are leaving the traits of Pisces behind.  We usually think of Pisces as being Neptune-ruled since Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces and explains the dreamy and imaginative nature of Pisces.  Neptune is  associated with magic and spirituality, but also with delusion and the negation of the Self – all characteristics of the 2000 year domination of the world by Christianity.  Note the astrological cardinal cross that creates the halo around the head in this image.

I am reading Reza Aslan’s book Zealot, the Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.  I have been waiting for this book for years – it is a beautifully written  history of the times in which the historical Jesus was born and spent his years as one of many Jews fighting the oppression of the Roman overlords.

One interesting point made in this book, which I have never heard before, is the distinction between “facts” and “truths.”  Aslan says:

How we define history, in the modern world, as a collection of observable and verifiable facts, is wholly a product of the modern age. That definition of history is a couple of hundred years old. It would make no sense at all to the gospel writers or frankly to the ancient mind, for whom history was not about uncovering facts but about revealing truths. This is, admittedly, a very difficult concept for modern people, not just Christians, but just modern people to understand that what they call history didn’t exist 300 years ago and so when I question some of the “historical claims of the […]

The 2021 Saturn Uranus square and its implications for the future

painting by Giulio Romano

The ancient myths

In the pre-patriarchal era of ancient times, the major deity was Gaia,  the primordial mother of Earth who emerged at the dawn of creation and was worshipped at ancient Delphi as early as 1400 bce during the Mycenean period.  All of the other gods and archetypes of the Hellenic period descend from her through her marriage to Uranus (Ouranos), the god of the sky.  The astrological archetype of Uranus carries into the present this sense of the visionary perspective that comes from the Universal sky.

Uranus by all accounts was a very bad father and threw most of his children into Tartarus (the regions of hell) and Saturn (Kronos in Greece) alone was willing to rise up against him, with the encouragement of Gaia.  There is a sense here of the attempted overthrow of the patriarchy by Gaia who previously had ruled alone. In any case, Saturn castrated Uranus and the power of the gods was passed on to the next generation.  Saturn wasn’t that great a father either and had a nasty habit of eating his children.  He in turn was castrated by Jupiter who went on to rule the Olympian gods. Sandwiched between the generation of the cosmic chaos deities Uranus (sky) and Gaia (earth), Saturn rules over the cold hard facts of matter and the mastery of the material world.

As the god of the sky, or more accurately the sky itself, Uranus represents the light of creation and the wisdom of the heavens.  The archetype of Uranus as the rebel and radical is fascinating in light of the mythological history.  It is fairly apparent that Gaia was the primary deity in pre-patriarchal times (age of Taurus), and […]

Thoughts on the Full Moon at the peak of the retrograde season

art by Joma Sipe

There is something symbolic to me about the Moon reaching its fullness in Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, just as the retrograde season is peaking with Mars turning retrograde on September 9th.  At that point there will be an astounding seven planets retrograde (including Chiron, or six without Chiron which is still astounding).  I did a little research project in which I attempted to find another period in history where there were this many retrograde planets for more than a week or two (in 2020 it lasts about five months) and even though I went back to the 1700s I was unable to find any period like this one.

Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac – the sign that represents letting go, returning to the source, the ultimate journey to consciousness.  This feels to me like the culmination of what 2020 has been all about.  I realize that it looks like simple random chaos to many people, but when you observe patterns and planetary cycles there is a clear underlying call of the Earth for humanity to make a change.  Our present course is unsustainable, and something had to snap at some point.  There is also symbolism in the fact that we are in the transition from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius, and Saturn will transition into Aquarius with Pluto soon behind.  In 2025 there is a tremendous planetary shift with all three outer planets – the planets that inspire transformation – changing signs at the same time.

(Geeky astrological details: Uranus will move from Taurus into Gemini.  Neptune […]
