What happened to Obama in the debate??

One thing everyone can agree on is that Barack Obama is a powerful speaker with an exceptional command of the English language and a preacher-like ability to inspire the emotions.  Yet he was universally declared the loser in the first presidential debate on October 3, 2012.  So what happened? You can catch up on my astrological profile of Obama here in part I, and here in part II.  With the Sun and Mercury in Leo, the sign of charisma and zest for life, Obama has a sunny disposition and a confident manner of speaking.  Aquarius is rising in the chart, reflecting his famous detachment and “Spock”-like qualities.  But the astrological factor being activated currently is that he is in his Chiron Return. Chiron is a small planet that was discovered in the late 1970s, and for some reason it, more than any of the other “minor” planets, has a powerful astrological effect.  Chiron in the chart shows where we are wounded, and how deeply those wounds run.  Planetary cycles involving Chiron will bring up those all wounds so that they can be re-experienced and released.  In Obama’s chart, Chiron is very strongly placed: in the first house of personal identity (reflecting the wound to his sense of self) and squares the Moon (emotions, inner world).  Chiron/Moon people are typically extremely sensitive emotionally and since Pluto is tied into the system as well (opposite Chiron and squaring the Moon), the process of identifying these old wounds and healing is a lifelong effort. At around age 51 we all experience the “Chiron Return,” which happens when Chiron returns to its place in the birthchart.  This can be a time of incredible emotional release – it […]

Astrologers predict the outcome of the 2012 election: Part II

2012 election astrologyThis is part II of a series, you can catch up on part I here.

There are many different astrological techniques for prediction.  Some are classical, and others are more creative.  When I am looking at relationship charts I will nearly always compare the progressed charts of the two individuals to see what is happening in the relationship at that time.  In an election, a people chooses its governing body and the relationship between them is quite important.

Some of this post may seem excessively geeky to many of my readers and for this I apologize.  When I progress all three charts for election day and compare the candidate charts to the progressed US chart, I get some interesting results.  Obama’s Chiron opposes his Venus, and this wound (Chiron) to his partnerships (Venus) falls right on the US ascendant/descendant axis of self vs. other.  Obama’s progressed Mars falls opposite Venus in the US progressed chart, suggesting a separation of some kind.  The nodes in the two charts are inconjunct each other, suggesting an inability to come together.

Comparing Mitt Romney’s progressed chart to the US progressed chart shows something astonishing: His Sun falls right on the US Midheaven (head of government) within 16 minutes of arc.  Without any other calculation, this would be a very telling factor.  But other factors in the chart are not so clear.  His progressed Moon/Midheaven conjunction forms a square alignment to US progressed Jupiter which suggests to me that he may be overly confident (Jupiter).  His progressed Ascendant will tightly oppose the US Pluto which could suggest a crisis of some sort.  And Chiron in his progressed chart tightly conjoins Saturn, indicating a painful event for all involved.

It’s […]

Election day musings

VOTE ANYWAYIt was just two years ago when, swept away by the excitement of the Saturn/Uranus opposition we elected the first African-American president who promised hope and change and a new America.  As one who didn’t much care for the Bush years, it was easy to hope and I figured anything would be a positive change.

I count myself in the 37% that still approves of Barack Obama.  Considering that he has presided over the greatest economic disaster since the Great Depression, in my opinion he has done a remarkable job.  I wish he would get us out of Afghanistan, and I don’t think that health care reform should have been the first priority, but I think he’s handled the economic difficulties intelligently and that we are now seeing the results.

I think there’s no question though that the US government is broken and needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.  When Pluto, the planet of destruction, entered the sign of governments and financial systems (Capricorn) it looked like the system might actually collapse.  This is something akin to a hospital patient who is rescued from a heart attack and then dies from MRSA – as long as the system is broken it remains in danger.

Pluto is still in Capricorn, so perhaps there is still hope: especially next year when Uranus in Aries challenges Pluto and there are minor revolutions going on in every corner.

The United States has been particularly affected astrologically because of the transit of Saturn and Pluto not only to the Midheaven of the chart (the point representing the national government), but also opposing Venus and Jupiter.  In fact, ever since Pluto crossed the ascendant of the US chart back in the year 2000 […]

This really is President Obama’s Katrina

Obama - Gulf oilPresident Obama will address the nation tonight in a speech about the oil disaster in the Gulf Coast.  We can argue all day, and probably will, over whether Obama has done enough to stem the tide of this horrific event, but in a politically divided world such as the one we are currently in his options are limited.  There are some in Congress for whom it is more important to see Obama fail than to solve the problem in the Gulf, so Obama is left with little he can do other than wring his hands and express emotion over the devastation, something he is ill equipped to do.

Obama isn’t President Clinton, who with a Leo Sun and Libra rising was a born politician, making everyone feel that they were the most important person in the universe (Libra) and basking in the glory of his success (Leo).  In a disaster Clinton is the first responder, shedding tears with the people and being one with everyone.

Obama has Aquarius rising – a transpersonal sign that chooses reason over emotion.  Obama’s solution to problems is to avoid getting involved in the emotion of the situation so that reason can create a solution.  The US chart has an Aquarian Moon, so normally that would not be such a problem for Americans to deal with, but at the moment the US chart shows a “double whammy” Neptune/Moon contact with the progressed Moon conjoining Neptune in the chart,  and transiting Neptune conjoining the Moon in the chart.

Neptune/Moon contacts blur the obvious and can distort reality – they create a desire for the ideal and a longing for something other than what we have.  The Neptunian longing is for ascension and […]

President Obama’s solar return

You can read my profile of Barack Obama here.

The Solar Return occurs at the moment that the Sun returns to its place in the birthchart.  That is often the birthday, but sometimes it is a day or two off.  More than just a time to celebrate the time of your birth, it’s actually a planetary cycle that begins a new when the Sun returns to its natal place.  The Sun illumines the Self and inspires us to fulfill the destiny that was given to us in the Sun sign, and the Solar Return shines a window into the manner in which that process might happen over the next year.

President Obama’s Solar Return occurred at 3:33 pm today (August 4).  This is an interesting number, but that’s for another story.  The Sun in the SR chart is in the Eighth House, the house of power, death, sexuality and taxes.  The President is clearly in charge of two of those aspects of the Eighth House, and I suspect that the other two will come into play at some point as well.  In the Eighth House we learn to read and understand the balances of power that pervade our every experience, but the Eighth House also calls on us to dive deep below the superficial.  Obama sailed into office on a sea of popularity which has been diminishing as the reality of the challenges the country face sets in.  This will be the year that tests his ability to hold and distribute the power of the Eighth House.

The only aspect to the Sun is a harmonious sextile from Mars that suggests that he will have a degree of success in achieving this.  Mars provides energy and passion to get […]
