7.10.21 Weekend Update – The New Moon continues to blossom today

art by Margaret Barry

Think about a New Moon as being like the bud of a flower which is just ready to open.  The moment of the astrological New Moon, the conjunction of the Sun and Moon, is the pregnant pause just before the bud begins to blossom.  Today the new beginning promised by the New Moon begins to unfold as the Moon completes her journey through her own sign of Cancer.  Today is the perfect day to center our attention on the heart and see what it has to tell us.  Where are the hard edges?  Where are the soft and squish spaces which need to heal?  We have greater access to the heart today than on many days, and our feelings take center stage.

The Moon leaves Cancer for Leo Saturday night (EDT), but Mercury shifts into Cancer on Sunday at 4:35 pm EDT.  After a long journey through Gemini, this movement of the planet of the mind into Cancer helps us to continue the journey into the watery realms of feeling and intuition, something which may have been lost in the Aquarian energies of early 2021 and the chatter of Mercury in Gemini over the past couple of months. Still, with the Moon in Leo on Sunday there will be some need for self-focus and hope for a joyful day. ❤️

7.9.21 – The New Moon in Cancer brings the heart into focus

art by Jessica Durant

The New Moon offers an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and begin anew, and in Cancer we find ourselves discovering a depth of emotion that we may have ignored in the past: the heart of wisdom. Ruled by the Moon itself, Cancer rules the inner world – our feelings, our desire to nurture and be cared for, our tribal identifications such as to family or country.  The heart connection forged by the sign of Cancer brings us more deeply into self-awareness and connection, which in turn helps us to develop sensitive connections with those around us.

At the New Moon, the sky is actually dark and the light of the Moon is invisible. There is a pregnant pause here before the sliver of the Moon begins to show itself in the crescent phase.  The intentions that we set at the New Moon may not be immediately apparent, and we may need to go into somewhat of a dark place before we can discover the light that is yet to emerge.

Under a strong influence of Aquarius since the beginning of the year, we may have neglected our emotions and sensitive heart;  Aquarius is rather unconcerned with matters of feelings and instead lives in the realm of air – intellect and communication have been more prevalent, especially with Mercury, planet of communication, in its own sign of Gemini for quite some time.  The 2021 square from Saturn in Aquarius to Uranus in Taurus is the story of change and a radical departure from the past that Cancer holds so dear.  Venus and Mars are both in fiery Leo right now, approaching their conjunction in a few days, so there is plenty of fire […]

Second New Moon in Cancer featuring the Comet Neowise

photo from Nunzio Micale, via David Crook

On July 20th we have a New Moon in Cancer, the second concurrent Cancerian New Moon.  This is fairly unusual and can only happen when the first New Moon is at the very early degrees of a sign, with the second coming 28 degrees later.  The New Moon is the beginning of a new lunar cycle, and typically the New Moon progresses through the signs each year along with the Sun so we tend to go from Aries at or after the Vernal Equinox through the zodiac, with each sign building on the sign before.  For example, at the Aries New Moon we learn the art of initiating an adventure, but then in Taurus we learn to find comfort in stability.

The New Moon in Cancer offers an opportunity to connect more deeply to our inner self – our physical home and the place within where we feel at home.  Cancer is ruled by the Moon – the emotional heart; the softness and vulnerability of the inner child. Cancer is associated with the family and our ancestral lineage as well as history in general.  Our histories define our early lives, especially in childhood, and then over time we learn to find a way to extend ourselves into the outer world under the auspices of Cancer’s opposite sign Capricorn.

The New Moon at the Summer Solstice marked a new significant beginning – it was a solar eclipse at the zero point of Cancer, conjunct the Solstice Sun.  This week’s New Moon (conjunction of the Sun and Moon) is at 28 degrees of Cancer, exactly opposite Saturn (tests and challenges) which is currently retrograde in Capricorn, and more widely opposite […]

The significance of the Solar Eclipse at the June Solstice

art by Robin Mead

I posted a portion of this article on my Facebook page.

Summer may begin on June 21st in the northern latitudes, and winter for my friends down under, but the June Solstice occurs when the Sun enters Cancer in the tropical zodiac.  This year’s June solstice occurs on June 20, 2020 at 5:43 pm EDT and will be followed shortly thereafter, at 2:41 am EDT on June 21st, by a solar eclipse at the New Moon in Cancer.  For thousands of years, humans have celebrated these solar events, as well as the equinox balance points, as major turning points of the year.  The solstices mark the extremes of the positioning of the Sun relative to the Earth and serve as a portal for the energies of solar conscious to penetrate through the mist of human illusion.

The symbolism of an eclipse is connected to the Nodes of the Moon – points in the sky where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun.  Because the lunar nodes are connected to fate and destiny, eclipses do often have a fated quality and a sense that something in the life is being exposed or released.  At the solar eclipse, the conscious intentional energy of the Sun is blocked by the lunar instincts and deep feelings.  Because the Sun and Moon are both in the emotional sign of Cancer, this focus on feelings and instinctive reactions is heightened even more.  And with Mercury (mind and communication) also in Cancer, our thoughts (Mercury) are flavored with feeling and less objective and rational than we may be comfortable with.

All New Moons, whether an eclipse or not, are a time […]

Cancer Supermoon Eclipse! July 12, 2018

Cancer New MoonThe Cancer New Moon on the 12th is a Supermoon and a partial solar eclipse.  The term Supermoon (™ astrologer Richard Nolle) simply means that the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth.  When the Moon is full and a Supermoon it appears large in the sky.  When the Supermoon is a New Moon, we can’t see it at all because the light of the Sun obscures the Moon.  When the New Moon is an eclipse, the Sun is obscured as well.

All New Moons, whether an eclipse or not, are a time of new beginnings.  The New Moon in Cancer seeks to connect us to our emotional roots – family, or the family that we create for ourselves.  We cannot master the world (Cancer’s opposite sign of Capricorn) until we connect deeply to our emotional heart and allow it to soften rather than build up a crusty shell that defends us from hurt but also prevents the flow of love.  This is one of the lessons of Cancer.

Another Cancerian lesson is that the past takes us to the future and cannot be avoided.  Our history is our present, and both can be transformed.

This is a partial eclipse visibly and pretty far from the lunar nodes so weaker astrologically –  but it is a powerful astrological event nonetheless.   The New Moon is exactly opposite Pluto, […]
