Chiron transits

Managing grief in a pandemic

art by Erisiar

Most of us thought we’d be out of here by now – the daily pressures of how to navigate this new world is getting kind of old. Is it safe to see our friends? What do I do about my job?  It looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel but the way is not yet clear.  Meanwhile we are still grieving losses, both old and new. Friendships that were broken. Spouses and other family members that have passed on.  Seven million humans who have died from Covid.

Sometimes feelings of grief appear to stem from events that occurred long ago.  A client who had mourned the loss of her mother that happened nine years ago.  Another who grieved the loss of her first marriage many years ago.  A widow who thought she had recovered from the death of a spouse is grappling again with the doubts about an uncertain future. Suddenly, after many years, the emotions welled up seemingly from nowhere to take over their lives.

Challenging astrological cycles do often coincide with painful events in our life, but whether the grief we feel is over a current loss or an old one, the feelings are the same.  Psychiatrists know that grief and emotional pain are stored in the psyche with the same intensity that they held during the original event. Chiron has been a great teacher and guide for astrologers’ understanding about the nature of grief, but Saturn and Pluto play a role as well.
Under Saturn transits we are painfully aware of our faults, our loneliness, and the blocks that keep us from our happiness.  Saturn is associated with depression which has a different tonal quality than grief.
Under Pluto […]

RIP Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs astrologySteve Jobs, former head of Apple Computing, died yesterday after battling pancreatic cancer since 2004.  He was 56 years old.

I profiled Mr. Jobs back in 2009:

Jobs has an interesting chart with the Sun in Pisces. Pisces is the sign of spirituality and transcending the boundaries of ordinary physical reality.  Pisces types are typically creative, inspirational, easygoing and meditative with a thirst for a spiritual experience.  They are also emotional and can be quite sensitive.  After dropping out of college, Jobs spent some time in 1974 backpacking through India, studying meditation and experimenting with psychedelic drugs.

Jupiter (optimism and confidence) is conjunct Uranus (innovation and radical behavior) in Jobs’ chart, signifying a person with a deeply restless nature, but also an innate ability to innovate and create.  Mars (the planet that defines how we assert our will and express our aggressive instinct) in his chart is in Aries, the sign which it rules.  That is an extremely forceful place for Mars to be; yet Jobs is a sensitive and easygoing Pisces.

Mars is afflicted in his chart: it is opposed by Neptune, the ruler of Pisces and a very watery planet – you know what happens when you pour a bucket of water (Neptune) over fire (Mars), the fire is likely to go out.  Mars is also in a challenging aspect to the Jupiter/Uranus combination, which shows that Jobs can have a very short fuse, but he may not, with his strongly Piscean nature, be able to release that fiery expression very easily.

It is said of Steve Jobs that he makes his own rules, which we can see in the Mars (drive) square to Jupiter/Uranus (radical behavior), and that is can be a temperamental manager which […]

What’s got into Serena Williams?

Tennis legend Serena Williams (9/26/1981, unverified time of 8:26 pm in Saginaw, MI) gave a referee a piece of her mind on Saturday, costing her the game and the match.  This sudden outburst is considered out of character for Serena, who rarely makes the news outside of the sports section.

This can be explained partially by her astrology chart and the fact that Serena has five planets in the peaceloving sign of Libra:  the Sun, Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto and Mercury.  But she’s not all peace, love and harmony – that Pluto/Mercury conjunction gives her plenty of verbal (Mercury) power (Pluto) and I suspect that she’s not afraid to use it.  Her Virgo Moon gives her a natural reticence and modesty, but this conflicts with a powerful Mars in the competitive sign of Leo, revealing her intense drive (Mars) to win (Leo). Still, that Virgo Moon is typically respectful of rules and dislikes rocking the boat and ESPN sports analyst Mary Carillo said, “This was an aberration, I’ve never seen her like that.”

It’s not surprising that Serena is touchier these days than usual.  Transiting Chiron, the planet that brings up all of our old wounds and fears, is making a square to Chiron in her natal chart. This is a challenging planetary event that removes the protective band-aids that we use to cover up our insecurities and old wounds of the psyche.

She has also had a major transit of Pluto making a square to her Sun.  Although that cycle is taking a breather, she has likely been going through some rather intense changes in her professional and personal life.

On the day of the incident, transiting Mars was forming an exact square to Saturn in Serena’s chart.  Saturn often […]

News of Chiron from the Expo

Sorry, there will be no Astrological Musings Radio show today because I’m at the Body, Mind Spirit Expo in Raleigh this weekend.  Rich and I do these two shows a year where we showcase beautiful crystals and mineral specimens and some jewelry, and I do astrology and tarot readings.  They are a lot of fun and a great opportunity to meet some fabulous people.

Next week we’ll be talking about the big planetary events coming up in September.  Of course I’ll be writing more about those events as well so watch for that over the next week or so.  Tomorrow I’ll be writing the September Skywatch article (visit my website for your free subscription!) so I’ll repost something interesting for you, and then Tuesday I’ll get back to regular blogging.

It’s been interesting talking to other practitioners about what their clients are going through.  Everyone has the same report:  Clients are more emotional than usual.  I had several readings yesterday with people who couldn’t keep from crying – their emotions were so close to the surface that they could no longer hold them back.  This is the effect of the Chiron/Neptune conjunction – the soul (Neptune) is releasing the pain of our old wounds (Chiron) so that healing and real transformation can bring us back to an ecstatic connection with our true self.

Sometimes when clients are going through a Chiron cycle they will want me to help them “get rid of all of this pain.”  Sometimes the emotional pain is instead transmitted into physical pain.  But the purpose of a Chironic event is not to get rid of the pain, but to walk through the fire of the pain and come out on the other side.  That painful sensitivity, however it manifests, is coming from painful memories that […]

Hillary Clinton and the New Moon chart

Reports are mixed as to whether Hillary Clinton will end her campaign after the last two primaries today. On Countdown last night:

Senator Hillary Clinton appears on the verge of suspending her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, and endorsing Senator Barack Obama. That, the widespread reading of the electoral tea leaves today, after a tidal wave of separate reports that add up to the end, in sight, probably by tomorrow night. In our fifth story on the Countdown — the components: She has reportedly personally urged her top backers and financial donors to attend her speech in New York tomorrow night. She reportedly told Senator Obama last night that their staffs should begin to bargain over what to do after Tuesday. Her official schedule, after a morning speech in Washington on Wednesday, is blank…And, perhaps most saliently, her staff has reportedly been urged to turn in all of their expense reports and receipts, before the end of this week. Now the details of what is being perceived as: the final Countdown.

Today would be a beautiful time astrologically for Senator Clinton to end her arguably failed race for the nomination. The New Moon, a time of new beginnings, forms a harmonious aspect (sextile) to the conjunction in her chart of Mars and Pluto in Leo that fuels her dogged determination and refusal to say no.

The New Moon is also very close to a conjunction to Mrs. Clinton’s progressed Moon, stimulating within her a flowering of emotional awareness and an inspiration to recreate herself in some way.

Mrs. Clinton’s natal Saturn is the subject of several powerful aspects right now. Saturn in the chart shows where we build our structures, and where we find ourselves alone creating the business of our lives. […]
