A few astrological thoughts about the Omicron variant

art by Lori Portka

When I sat down to write this week’s forecast this came out instead. Thank you for your patience!

I’d like to say a few words about the new virus variant Omicron. There are a lot of astrologers who are making a variety of astrological connections – this is happening because Neptune is in Pisces. It’s because there was a large grouping of planets in one sign last year.  It’s because there’s a fixed star called Omicron Piscium so this must be fate (it turns out there are lots of Omicron stars that have nothing to do with Pisces, it seems to be a designation of a type of star but I hope someone will correct me if this is wrong).

Some astrologers said there was more optimism when Jupiter sneaked into Pisces earlier this year. Now others are saying the virus will be worse when Jupiter re-enters Pisces.  I think we will know more when Jupiter and Neptune conjoin in Pisces in April 2022.  One thing is for sure, the tightened controls (Saturn in Aquarius) that are being implemented now will certainly exacerbate the reactions against them (Uranus in Taurus) under the final phase of the square from Saturn to Uranus later in December.

Even as someone whose religion is astrology, I do not believe that we can tie every little thing to astrological factors. Many of us did predict some kind of virus when Neptune entered Pisces, including me.  The fact that there are natural cycles that are somewhat predictable in the sense that we have some idea of the type of energies we will be dealing with is very comforting.  Knowing that certain things are possible at certain times, for me, gives […]

Managing grief in a pandemic

art by Erisiar

Most of us thought we’d be out of here by now – the daily pressures of how to navigate this new world is getting kind of old. Is it safe to see our friends? What do I do about my job?  It looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel but the way is not yet clear.  Meanwhile we are still grieving losses, both old and new. Friendships that were broken. Spouses and other family members that have passed on.  Seven million humans who have died from Covid.

Sometimes feelings of grief appear to stem from events that occurred long ago.  A client who had mourned the loss of her mother that happened nine years ago.  Another who grieved the loss of her first marriage many years ago.  A widow who thought she had recovered from the death of a spouse is grappling again with the doubts about an uncertain future. Suddenly, after many years, the emotions welled up seemingly from nowhere to take over their lives.

Challenging astrological cycles do often coincide with painful events in our life, but whether the grief we feel is over a current loss or an old one, the feelings are the same.  Psychiatrists know that grief and emotional pain are stored in the psyche with the same intensity that they held during the original event. Chiron has been a great teacher and guide for astrologers’ understanding about the nature of grief, but Saturn and Pluto play a role as well.
Under Saturn transits we are painfully aware of our faults, our loneliness, and the blocks that keep us from our happiness.  Saturn is associated with depression which has a different tonal quality than grief.
Under Pluto […]

Sunday inspiration: The meaning of Catastrophe

Court Games Tarot

A portion of this article was originally published in 2013.  I dug it out of the archives because we are living through a plethora of catastrophes: a pandemic, the overthrow of many governments around the world, volcanoes, cyclones, fires… but there is inspiration to be found in all of these events which transform the world we know in ways which we would not expect.

The word catastrophe comes from the Greek “katastrophē” meaning “a sudden turn, an overturning,”  “a reversal of what is expected.”  In the tragedies of ancient Greece, the “katastrophē” was the climax of the plot.  Usually the catastrophe leads to a change in fortune, for better or for worse, after a realization on the part of the hero.

As an astrologer, I am always curious about catastrophes in a person’s life, because there is nearly always something of great significance astrologically that provides clues to the nature of this apparent disaster.  I believe that when we are ignoring our lives or unable to face certain truths, the Universe will present us with a catastrophe to get our attention and create the change and transformation that is required.

In order to get there, though, we have to completely suspend our usual ideas of what is good and bad, life and death.  A horrible childhood event can serve as the tool to foster a lifetime of introspection and self-discovery.  A terrible accident can create a lifetime of pain, but also shock us into realizing that a change in our life is needed.  A natural disaster can wipe away a family, but allow us to put our grief to work in helping others.  A terminal illness will end a life, but can bring great richness […]

Hey everybody, my name is Lynn Hayes. Welcome back to my channel. If you’re new here, I post a new video every Monday about the astrological forces affecting us in the coming week and helping you to navigate them. In today’s video, we’ll be talking about the Leo New Moon, which is on Tuesday, August 18, and how we can get the most out of this fresh new start, as well as other astrological factors that will affect your week.

The New Moon in Leo is August 18. And in the Eastern Time Zone, it begins at 10:41pm. Please adjust for your own locality. When the Moon is set to be new. It’s the fusion of the Sun the solar conscious attention to the outer world and the Moon, which is the instinctive lunar reaction to the inner world. With the Sun we look out and with the Moon we look in – when those two energies are fused it’s a brilliant new start to a new lunar cycle.

The day before the New Moon is the dark and waning phase. That’s when we’re letting go of things that no longer serve us in preparation for the new phase. It’s a good time to end anything that’s not working for you anymore. It’s also a good time to be turning inwards and listening to the inner voice, the […]
