Punkie night!

Punkie NightBeth Owl’s Daughter reminds us that tonight is “Punkie Night,” an ancient celebration from Somerset England which is celebrated by the carving of pumpkin-like mangolds.   Beth writes, “Throughout Somerset, locals use the term “spunky” to refer to Will-o-the-Wisps — a ball of light seen at night rising up from a marsh or bog.”  In Christianized England these “spunkies” were thought to be the souls of unbaptized children who wandered eternally through the night, but the pagans saw spunkies as being trickster sprites; the carved and lit pumpkins were meant to turn the tables and trick the spunkies.

I don’t know what it is about Somerset and adjacent Wiltshire: these magical places are the sites not only of Avebury and Stonehenge, but also of most of the world’s crop circles. In any case, modern day “spunkies,” called “orbs,” are frequently found in new crop circles and there is much speculation about the nature of these balls of light.  Are they UFOs?  Are they conscious beings?

I’ll be writing more about Samhain which is celebrated by contemporary pagans in lieu of Hallowe’en on October 31st; the actual astrological date of Samhain is when the Sun reaches 15 degrees Scorpio which this year will be on November 7th.

Watch the video below to see orbs at work.

Crop Circles in Brazil

Crop circles don’t have anything to do with astrology, and perhaps they have no place in an astrology blog. But I love a good mystery (my Mercury is in Scorpio – there!  I made an astrological connection).
From Professor A.J. Gevaerd, via Colin Andrews:

[O]n October 29th, in the same town of Ipuaçu, by a few miles from the precise spot here last year’s circles have been found, a new sign in a wheat plantation was registered. This time, however, it is nothing like a circle, but a figure far more complex and with precise measures in its internal features. Take a look at the diagram:

;

The case was first reported by newsman Ivo Luis Dohl, consultant of the Brazilian UFO magazine, who lives nearby and was the same investigator to report last year’s cases. He is on site 24/7 evaluating this new case and waiting for others to come, and in permanent contact with the magazine HQ in Curitiba. This new circle was found by Bernardete Trevisan, who lives in the área where the formation was found. She called Vagner Visoli, officer from the City Hall, who went to the place and called Ivo Dohl.

Visoli was the first to arrive at the formation area and assured the Brazilian UFO Magazine that he found no indication of human action at all. No footprints, not tractor tracks (except for old ones produced during plantation process, weeks before), no indication at all of how […]

Conspiracy Corner: Alchemy and demons in crop circles

Molly Hall at About Astrology posted a link to Linda Moulton Howe’s excellent crop circle site where she compares the latest crop circle to a sigil used by the ancient alchemists. Linda writes:

Sigils are codes created for a specific magical purpose. The pattern is the code derived from a number and/or letter grid known only to those who produce sigils from the known grid. A sigil is usually made up of a complex combination of several specific symbols or geometric figures each with a specific meaning or intent. The term sigil derives from the Latin sigillum meaning “seal,” though it may also be related to the Hebrew segulah meaning “word, action or item of spiritual effect.”

There is sigil magic in which symbols and signs are used as tools of magicians and alchemists. In medieval ceremonial magic, sigils represented various angels and demons that the magician can summon. The magical training books called the Grimoires often listed pages of angel and demon sigils. A particularly well-known list is in the Lesser Key of Solomon, in which the sigils of the 72 princes of the hierarchy of hell are given for the magician’s use, including the demon Aim. Such sigils were

considered to be the equivalent of the true name of the spirit, and thus granted the magician a measure of control over the entities being called.

For example:

From the Lesser Key of Solomon is this Sigil which is evidently “for the demon, Aim (aka Aym or Haborym), ho is a Great Duke of Hell ruling over twenty-six legions f demons and using fire to destroy. Aim is depicted as humanoid ith three heads: one a serpent; the second a man with two stars on the forehead; and the third a […]

Crop circles are getting weirder

Some conspiracy theorists speculate that crop circles are being made by satellite transmitters that have been programmed with mind control messages.  That seems rather far out until you read this:

The 2009 crop circle ‘season’ started with abundance and now looks set to bring a summer of circles to Britain’s fields.
Whether made by human hands or an altogether different life form, no less than 20 formations have been spotted since the season began in April. This week alone two huge designs have mysteriously surfaced.

An intricate 150ft dragonfly appeared in a barley field near Yatesbury, Wiltshire, just days after a jellyfish design was cut into crops in Oxfordshire.

When the 600ft Portuguese man-of-war turned up near Kingstone Coombes, Oxfordshire, crop circle author Karen Alexander said: ‘This is the first jellyfish crop circle in the world. It is absolutely huge – roughly three times the size of most crop patterns.’ Last week a 350 ft yin-yang symbol was cut into a barley field near Devizes, a crop circle hot spot.

more here… and also see Crop Circle Connector which has lots of photos.

With over 20 crop circles in the past two months, the crop circle phenomenon is more than just a curiosity.  There is some speculation that the circles are being produced by the millitary using microwave technology.

The crop circles appear in areas that are near ley-lines, where the electromagnetic energy of the earth is said to be more powerful and there is evidence of higher EMF levels inside the circles.  This is leading to suspicion among some esoteric researchers that whoever is creating the circles is attempting to disrupt the natural force of the ley lines at these sites.

New crop circle found August 8, 2008

This crop circle was found at 5:30 am.  The Crop Circle Connector field report seems to suggest that it was made using mechanical means, but it’s a fascinating image nonetheless.

Harold Stryderight tells us that the figure 8 refers to the upcoming lunar eclipse:

Each big circle of balls of increasing size shows an almost complete lunar phase cycle of 22 days (where the full number equals 29.5). Then 14 or 15 small “spikes” between balls tell on which days our Moon will appear above the horizon at sunset, moving west to east each day, so as to lie eventually opposite the setting Sun on August 16 (the exact number of days equals 14.75). Similar symbols were shown in lunar-phase drawings from Stonehenge 1996, Windmill Hill 1996, Milk Hill 2001 or East Field 2007.

At its centre, we can see the ancient Celtic Cross symbol for “planet Earth” (from Wiltshire 1990-1992), superimposed partly on the largest ball or “full Moon” which has been already 15 days above the horizon at sunset. On that day–August 16—planet Earth will come directly between our Sun and the Moon, so as to create an 81% partial shadow on the Moon as shown.

All data and images taken from Crop Circle Connector story.
