Millenials: The loneliest generation

A new article by Vox News reports that 30% of the age group commonly referred to as Millenials (described in this article as age 22-38, corresponding exactly to the period when Pluto was in Scorpio, is lonely.

22 percent of millennials in the poll said they had zero friends. Twenty-seven percent said they had “no close friends,” 30 percent said they have “no best friends,” and 25 percent said they have no acquaintances.

This 30% loneliness figure compares with 15% of the Baby Boomers born under Pluto in Leo, and 20% of those born under Pluto in Virgo.

Pluto spends between 12 and 20 years in each sign, and the generations born under these signs share certain qualities, although they are not the same.  The Baby Boomer generation, born under Pluto in Leo, generally share some Leo qualities of creative self expression and a relentless desire for joy.  Generation X, born under Pluto in Virgo, share some Virgoan qualities of service and self-effacement.  In my article on Saoirse Kennedy Hill I discussed the challenges of the generation with Pluto in Sagittarius.

The Millenial generation, born when Pluto was in Scorpio between approximately 1981-82 and 1995-96, share Scorpionic qualities of intensity and a deep understanding and familiarity with the notion of the end of life, an understanding where there are no illusions, no false optimism.  Every individual is different, but this generation generally won’t surround themselves with large number of friends and will count themselves lucky if they have one or two close friends with which to share their secret fears and personal dramas.

Vox also reports that “in a 2016 paper, researchers in Germany found a peak of loneliness in a sample of 16,000 […]

A look at Generation Z: The Pluto in Sagittarius generation

Pluto in Sagittarius generationPluto moves through a sign approximately every 20 years – its orbit is elliptical and there is a huge variation in the length of time Pluto spends in any sign – from 12 to 30 years!  Each sign that Pluto moves through marks a new generation with a new set of issues and priorities (other posts on generations can be found here).

Sometimes called “Generation Z” and described by social scientists as being born between 1995 and 2009 (Pluto was in Sagittarius between 1995 and 2008 making this a very close fit),  this generation is finding it difficult to live in today’s Capricornian world.  Sagittarius bestows an open mind and an eagerness to explore other cultures – it often tends to be fascinated with the media, philosophy and religion.  Sagittarius is optimistic and needs the freedom to adventure and has a dislike of being controlled.  It’s a very social sign and enjoys influencing the opinions of others.

Under the influence of Pluto in Sagittarius the publishing industry as we knew it was destroyed and the internet took over the dissemination of knowledge. Globalism and international communication transformed the realm of commerce.  The power of positive thinking and personal growth erupted into the mainstream. But Pluto is the planet of obsession and destruction as well as transformation and regeneration, and Pluto in a sign tends to intensify the attributes of that sign to the extreme.

Here are some things the media  has said about “Generation Z” – you’ll easily see how well this fits the Sagittarius archetype:

  • Church attendance for this group is up: 41% compared to Millenials (Pluto in Scorpio) at 18% (Sagittarius rules religion).
  • This generation […]

NYT asks: “What is it about 20-somethings?”

Answer:  They have Pluto in Sagittarius.

This question pops up everywhere, underlying concerns about “failure to launch” and “boomerang kids.” Two new sitcoms feature grown children moving back in with their parents — “$#*! My Dad Says,” starring William Shatner as a divorced curmudgeon whose 20-something son can’t make it on his own as a blogger, and “Big Lake,” in which a financial whiz kid loses his Wall Street job and moves back home to rural Pennsylvania. A cover of The New Yorker last spring picked up on the zeitgeist: a young man hangs up his new Ph.D. in his boyhood bedroom, the cardboard box at his feet signaling his plans to move back home now that he’s officially overqualified for a job. In the doorway stand his parents, their expressions a mix of resignation, worry, annoyance and perplexity: how exactly did this happen?

It’s happening all over, in all sorts of families, not just young people moving back home but also young people taking longer to reach adulthood overall. It’s a development that predates the current economic doldrums, and no one knows yet what the impact will be — on the prospects of the young men and women; on the parents on whom so many of them depend; on society, built on the expectation of an orderly progression in which kids finish school, grow up, start careers, make a family and eventually retire to live on pensions supported by the next crop of kids who finish school, grow up, start careers, make a family and on and on. The traditional cycle seems to have gone off course, as young people remain un tethered to romantic partners or to permanent homes, going back to school for lack of better […]

Pluto in Leo generation “beset by disabilities”

baby boomer disabilities
The National Health Interview survey found that disabilities for people between the ages of 50 and 64 are on the rise, a statistic that contrasts with a decline in disabilities for people aged 65 and over.   The age group in trouble is the one that was born between 1945 and 1960 which corresponds to the Pluto in Leo generation.  (You can read more about that generation, also called “baby boomers,” here.

While the total number of adults reporting physical problems in this age group did not change significantly over the study period, there was a significant uptick in people reporting difficulties with specific mobility related functions, including walking a quarter-mile and climbing 10 steps.

There was also an increase in the number of people using special equipment to get around, such as a cane or wheelchair. In addition, more people reported needing help with daily personal care activities, such as getting out of bed and moving around the home.

Specifically, the problems reported by boomers include back or neck problems, diabetes and depression, anxiety or emotional problems.  The Pluto in Leo generation is driven by ego concerns – Leo is the sign of the Self and the Ego, and Pluto brings a compulsive quality to the sign that has driven this generation to seek glorification in many ways.  This was the first generation to embrace exercise for its own sake and in order to stave off the signs of aging, and overexercise is a major cause of mobility distress.

This intense focus on the Self and the ego that Pluto in Leo demands can easily result in emotional issues – it will be interesting to see if this tendency towards depression and […]
