Sunday inspiration: The Neptune station and finding compassion for ourselves

art by Rita Loyd. If the last week has taught us anything, it’s that we have no idea what’s going on inside the minds of others.  A client told me yesterday, “everyone else I know is having so much fun.”  In today’s glitzy social media world, it’s so easy to look at the Instagram feeds of your friends and think that everyone is having a perfect life. That’s the curated version – the one that we choose to show the world.

Often the real version, the life that we are actually living, is quite different.  And the gap between how we really feel about our lives and how we see the lives of others is growing thanks to the power of social media to amplify the ideal and hide the truth.

Social media is the 21st century equivalent of the Christmas brag letter. Quite a few years ago my husband and I laughed over such a letter – one of the sons had been arrested that year and the other had had a bad acid trip and ended up in the psych ward.  These two events were completely transformed in the Christmas letter to make it appear as though everything was just fine.

When we look at the life of someone we don’t know and assume their life is perfect, we are missing the point and hurting ourselves.  We don’t know what kind of misery that person may have gone through to get where they are today. We don’t know what their happy exterior might be hiding. But most importantly, envy and resentment close the heart and keep us from happiness.

Neptune is at a standstill right now as it prepares to turn retrograde on the 18th.  Neptune […]

RIP Kate Spade

Designer Kate Spade, whose handbags can be seen everywhere, has died of an apparent suicide at the age of 55.  A fashion designer for many years,in 2006 she sold the successful company that she started with her husband in 1993.  Their more recent endeavors had not been as well received.

I recently did a session for a client who was very depressed and wanted to know if her chart showed a tendency towards suicide.  The fact is, while a chart can show whether an individual will suffer from depression and what form that is likely to take, how they manage their suffering is not something we can see in the chart.  We can see whether someone has the strength to actively fight for their health and turn their life around, but we can’t predict whether or not they will actually do it.

Kate Spade’s chart (set for noon, no birth time available) does show the potential for psychological issues.  Emotional intensity (Pluto square the Moon) adds to a deep sense of abandonment as illustrated by stressful aspects from Chiron (soul wounding and healing) to both the Moon and Pluto. Uranus (radical behavior) is involved too in that system, which can sometimes suggest a tendency towards anxiety and a highly sensitized nervous system.  The fact that her Moon was in happy Sagittarius suggests that it would be difficult for her to delve into her unhappiness and would instead attempt to fly beyond her problems.

Ms. Spade’s chart was also weak in the fire element; her Sagittarius Moon provided motivation and drive […]

The difference between happiness and joy

At first glance, we might think that happiness and joy are the same thing.  Both make us feel good, both are qualities that we seek.  In fact, embedded in the United States Constitution is the inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness.

In reality, though, I would argue that the two are quite different both in quality and in their effect on our human lives.  Happiness is a feeling, an emotion – a sense of pleasure and contentment. Happiness comes to us when we feel that life is worth living; that the circumstances in our lives have manifested in a way to generate a feeling that life is good.  The astrological correlation for this sensation is Jupiter – the Greater Benefic, the planet that helps to activate these good feelings of abundance and confidence and which often brings about actual good luck and good fortune.  Venus, the Lesser Benefic, is also involved in good feelings in its role as the seeker of pleasure, love and beauty.

Though a dictionary might say that joy is a synonym for happiness, they have a different quality.  Where happiness is based upon life circumstances and events that are good rather than bad, joy is an inner experience that springs from the heart and the soul.  Happiness comes and goes depending on our circumstance; joy arises from the soul when we feel completely aligned in our sense of Self.

Joy is defined in dictionaries as being synonymous with exultation, jubilation, exhilaration, elation, euphoria, bliss, rapture – sensations that activate a higher perspective than mere happiness and require a turning away from attachment to the things that come and go.  To me, this is represented by the full and complete activation […]

Fate vs free will in astrology: Part I, a history involving Pluto

modern astrologyEven though Pluto was not discovered until 1930, its influence is evident in the evolution of modern astrology. The renaissance of astrology in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries began with Alan Leo and the birth of the publication “Modern Astrology” in 1895 when Pluto was in the information gathering sign of Gemini.  Gemini is more concerned with the sharing of information than finding any kind of ultimate truth, and Alan Leo, who was a Theosophist, was primarily concerned with spreading the language of astrology to the masses via what we now call horoscope columns.

In England, astrology under Pluto in Gemini was a more academic affair but the “cookbook” texts of Charles Carter similarly helped to spread the language of astrology to more people than ever before. Carter’s words on fate illustrate the way in which the idea of predetermination was beginning to fade:

As regards the higher part of man’s nature, his rational, moral, and aesthetic faculties, it is my firm belief that, if we chose to unfold them, no stellar influence can prevent us, though it may place obstacles and hindrances in our path. There are parts of our lives which the stars do seem to a large extent to dominate, and there is a yet greater part which they undoubtedly can affect, both favourably and adversely. It is for us to place our treasure where they cannot penetrate; no easy task, it is true, but probably the one most worth performing.

The discovery of Pluto in the 1930s coincided with the scientific breakthroughs required to release the atomic bomb which symbolizes Pluto’s destructive force which sometimes requires complete annihilation followed by a necessary rebuilding phase.  But it also coincided with the groundbreaking work of […]

The Astrology of Prince Harry’s Revelations

Prince Harry astrologyIn a series of recent interviews, Prince Harry has revealed some of his innermost thoughts and feelings, something very unusual for the normally strait-laced Windsors of Britain.

Harry’s chart is loaded with the element of Earth – Sun in Virgo, Capricorn rising and Moon in Taurus.  Practical, grounded and anchored in the material world, Earthy people tend to be very responsible and understand the necessities of position and place in the world.  Yet in his youth, Harry was known as the mischievous child, forever pulling pranks on those around him and in school was constantly in trouble, according to Diana’s letters (published posthumously).

Mars in Harry’s chart is in the freedom-loving sign of Sagittarius and widely conjunct Uranus, planet of the rebel. The conflict between this iconoclastic rabble-rouser and the earthy pragmatism is a challenging one and in a conflict like this we often project one side into outer life.  Because Harry was brought up in the tightly controlled environment of British royalty, this need to be responsible to the British people appears to be a strong professional motivator and in fact, the planet of responsibility, Saturn, sits right on the Midheaven (the point of career and public life).  But this Uranian/Sagittarian side inspires him to create change in the monarchy; to modernize it for the 21st century.

Harry’s chart shows a challenging opposition between Chiron (wounding and healing) and Uranus (electromagnetic energy field).  This aspect is quite common in those born between the mid 1950s and the mid 1980s, but no one else alive today has it.  Individuals with this chart dynamic are typically extremely sensitive energetically and born healers.  They have […]
