Brilliant Aquarius New Moon February 18th

Aquarius new moonIf you know the artist who created this work please let me know!!  The Aquarius New Moon on the 18th takes place at the 29th degree of Aquarius just a few minutes before the Sun enters Pisces.

Aquarius is symbolized by the “water bearer,” but Aquarius has nothing to do with the watery realm of emotion.  Rather, it symbolizes the cleansing effect of water which purify and cleanse every aspect of human existence so that it can be illuminated and refreshed.

This is the second of two New Moons in Aquarius: the first one was at the first degree of Aquarius and this one is at the last degree. The New Moon is typically representative of a brand new beginning, but in this case we have a brand new beginning at the end of a sign which is also a completion of sorts. Aquarius lifts us above the day to day mundane reality of life on earth and gives us the perspective that comes from detachment and reason, free from emotion.

This lunation makes an inconjunct aspect to Mars in Pisces – a somewhat awkward and challenging aspect that provides tension with no possibility of resolution. Aquarius asks that we transcend the personal in order to serve humanity, but the inconjunct aspect to Mars makes that more difficult and could create inner tension for a few days.  Mars represents the aggressive force and is not happy in Pisces anyway, so the next few days could be somewhat difficult as we attempt to assert our will (Mars) but emotions (New Moon and the Pisces influence) get in the way.

The Sun enters Pisces immediately after the New Moon, and there is an energetic shift that will melt resistance and encourage flow and […]

The astrology of Paul Walker’s death

Paul WalkerActor Paul Walker died on November 30th when a 2005 Porsche Carrera he was riding in crashed into a light pole and burst into flames.  Walker was most noted for his role in the “Fast and Furious” franchise of vehicular-oriented action films so it is ironic that he died in an automobile accident.

Automobiles are ruled by Mercury which is concerned with short journeys as opposed to plane rides to distant lands.  Mercury was important in Paul Walker’s chart in several ways: Mercury is the traditional ruler of Virgo (I personally believe that Chiron is the modern ruler of Virgo although this is a matter of interpretation) and Walker’s Sun was in Virgo, as was his Mercury.  When Mercury is in one of its own signs (Gemini is the other) it is stronger in its expression and more important in the chart, and when Mercury rules the Sun, the essential Self of the individual, its power becomes magnified to an even greater extent.

We typically don’t think of Virgos as being particularly reckless, although there is a type of Radical Virgo (such as Amy Winehouse) in which  other chart dynamics (such as Mars or Uranus placements) conflict with the Virgo element to drive the individual into reckless and radical behavior.  We don’t see that in Walker’s chart, and indeed Walker’s “Fast and Furious” character Brian O’Connor served as the steady counterpoint to Vin Diesel’s wild and testosterone-driven lead character.

This makes sense with Walker’s Taurus Mars – a slow and steady Mars that is not excitable or overly aggressive.  Mars in Taurus is the proverbial bull who is slow to anger, but when anger erupts it explodes with a powerful force.

Walker’s chart was not a […]

The astrology of the George Zimmerman verdict

George Zimmerman astrologyPhoto from TMZ.

Yesterday I posted about the entry of Mars into the summer’s planetary intensity.  It doesn’t take an astrologer to predict that the “not guilty” verdict in the trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin would erupt into street protests, and the entry of Mars into Cancer and the resulting flareup of angry (Mars) feelings (Cancer) is just a trigger for the tinderbox of tension that is part of the Uranus/Pluto square.  (See the sidebar section on this planetary cycle if you are new to this site.)

Yesterday throngs of people protesting the verdict came out in New York, in Los Angeles, in Portland, in Miami, in Jacksonville, Newark, Oakland, Pittsburgh…  This is likely just the beginning.  As the week goes on and Mars starts to square off more directly with both Uranus (revolution) and Pluto (power structures) expect the reaction to intensify, in both directions.

I wrote about the arrest of Mr. Zimmerman back in 2012. and related the shooting of Trayvon Martin to the astrological chart for the United States.

In order to assess the effect these individuals are having on the evolution of the United States I examined the progressed charts for all of the players using the information available  without accurate birth times.  Trayvon Martin’s progressed Saturn was exactly quincunx the progressed Moon in the US chart, demonstrating the challenge (Saturn)  to the emotions (Moon) of Americans in a struggle that, like the quincunx aspect, has no real way of achieving resolution. Both progressed Mars and Jupiter in Trayvon’s chart are trine Progressed Chiron in the US chart, motivating the desire (Mars) to raise up painful old wounds (Chiron) […]

The astrology of Felix Baumgartner, the world’s fastest man

“Austrian daredevil” Felix Baumgartner fell to earth on Sunday from a capsule lifted by a helium balloon above New Mexico, traveling over 24 miles in four minutes, at times faster than the speed of sound.  From the New York Times article:

He broke altitude and speed records set half a century ago by Joe Kittinger, now 84, a retired Air Force colonel whose reassuring voice from mission control guided Mr. Baumgartner through tense moments. Engineers considered aborting the mission when Mr. Baumgartner’s faceplate began fogging during the ascent, but he insisted on proceeding and made plans for doing the jump blind.   That proved unnecessary, but a new crisis occurred early in the jump when he began spinning out of control in the thin air of the stratosphere — the same problem that had nearly killed Mr. Kittinger a half-century earlier. But as the atmosphere thickened, Mr. Baumgartner managed to stop the spin and fall smoothly until he opened his parachute about a mile above the ground and landed smoothly in the New Mexico desert.   “It was harder than I expected,” said Mr. Baumgartner, a 43-year-old former Austrian paratrooper. “Trust me, when you stand up there on top of the world, you become so humble. It’s not about breaking records any more. It’s not about getting scientific data. It’s all about coming home.”

This last sentence got my attention: “It’s all about coming home.”  Normally we would expect a daredevil’s astrological chart to have lots of fire, or a square of Mars (action) to Uranus (rebellion) which can be somewhat different.  Baumgartner’s chart shows a different motivation. Baumgartner (born April 20, 1969, Salzburg Austria, time unknown) has the Sun in Taurus, the sign that more than any other is connected to life on […]

The astrology of Rosie O’Donnell’s heart attack

Rosie O'Donnell heart attackRosie O’Donnell, the well-known comedienne, suffered a heart attack this week at the age of 50.  I have profiled Rosie in these pages before, especially about her “Mars problem” as I call it:

It’s no secret that the most brilliant comedians are often depressed and angry individuals who release their frustration through comedy, and Rosie O’Donnell is no exception. Rosie was born with the Sun in Aries, the sign that is ruled by the god of war. The Aries influence is dynamic and inspirational but can also be rebellious and impulsive. Rosie O’Donnell exhibits all of these character traits.

Mars in her chart, the planet that rules her Aries Sun, falls in the mystical and adaptable sign of Pisces. When the fiery god of war (Mars) is expressed through the watery sign of empathy and the subconscious (Pisces), there is a tendency for unconscious resentments, anger turned inward into depression. In addition, Pisces tends to shrink from conflict so Mars in Pisces can produce passive aggressive behavior that doesn’t confront a problem directly but instead is outwardly peaceful (Pisces) but subtly sabotages a situation.

Mars in Rosie’s chart is conjunct Mercury, the planet of communication and transmission of ideas, a combination that links her aggressive instinct (Mars) with her thoughts and words (Mercury). Because Mercury is also in sensitive Pisces, Rosie is extremely empathic and compassionate to those around her, but she can also become a warrior (Mars) with words (Mercury) when she is crossed. Both Mars and Mercury are conjunct Chiron, the god of wounding and healing, which suggests a hypersensitivity that can be very reactive.

This Mars/Mercury/Chiron combination is opposed by Pluto, the planet of power and transformation. When the god of […]
