Jupiter in Aries

Planetary news this week: Jupiter enters Aries and the Capricorn Solstice

Astrological update for the week of December 19-26, 2022

There are two major transitions this week: The re-entry of Jupiter into Aries after its retrograde time in Pisces, and the entry of the Sun into Capricorn which marks the December solstice point which will be followed immediately by a Capricorn New Moon.

A time of change. We have been stuck in a myriad of global problems for the past several years – stuck under the Capricorn stellia (groupings of planets) with Saturn and Pluto, stuck in conflict under the Saturn/Uranus square. As I and many other astrologers have been reporting (see Part I here, Part II will be published in the next week), the energies over the next few years will be dramatic and marked by change and transition. A New Moon just after the solstice, a point at which the Sun literally stands still, is a dramatic symbol of the changes to come.

The Capricorn solstice. In the solar cycle we celebrate the shortest day as the return of the Sun and the beginning of the new year.  The culmination of the solar cycle is at the opposite solstice, with the quarter points of the equinoxes, when light and dark are in balance, are equivalent to the waxing and waning squares, similar to the waxing and waning squares of the lunar cycle.  Honoring both the solar and lunar cycles helps to keep us in touch with the cycles of nature even in today’s world in which we are so disconnected from the natural world.  These cycles of nature can serve as an alchemical process of personal transformation, just as we follow the cycles of the planets as they unfold to bring experiences of knowledge and wisdom […]

Astrological news this week: Mars in its happy place and a Gemini New Moon

art by Shiloh Sophia

Astrological update for the week of May 23-30, 2022

Mars in Aries. The instinct for self-preservation is a critical one for the survival of a human individual the role of Mars is to preserve the Self and to gratify desire.  Mars is particularly strong when in the sign of Aries, and Mars will enter Aries on Tuesday May 24.  While in Aries, Mars is at its most potent and the aggressive force is permitted full expression, unhampered by the niceties of signs like Libra or Pisces, by practical considerations such as Capricorn and Taurus would exercise, or by reason and intellectual processing such as Gemini and Aquarius would instigate.  It is pure, unadulterated need and drive.

When this basic force of need is thwarted, frustration is the result.  A certain amount of frustration leads to anger, and chronic anger leads to chronic rage and health problems.  The idea that Mars is a malefic planet that brings no good is a feature of traditional forms of astrology in which the outcome of human life is considered to be fated. It’s certainly true that when Mars is positioned opposite a difficult planet like Pluto, it can bring misfortune to the native especially in early life. We often see some kind of abuse or oppression under these circumstances. Actress Samantha Morton, for example, has Mars in Aries opposite Pluto in Libra and she has talked about the abuse she experienced while in foster care and her life has not been easy. But the personal empowerment experience after mastering the challenges that a Mars/Pluto combination can bring can also bring great success and deep feelings of satisfaction.

At any rate, a healthy Mars […]

Astrological news this week: Mercury, Jupiter and a Scorpio SuperMoon eclipse

Astrological update for the week of May 9-16, 2022

There’s a lot going on this week!   Mercury turns retrograde on May 10th, the same day that Jupiter enters Aries.  Mercury is in Gemini now, a sign in which it is very much at home, but it will retrograde back into Taurus on May 22nd. Mercury is the planet associated with mental activity, the processing of information, short travels and the operation of equipment. Where Mercury in Gemini is active and curious, easily able to change and adapt, Taurus is a fixed sign and Mercury in Taurus tends to be more stubborn and resists change which can make a retrograde period more difficult. During retrograde periods of any planet there is a tendency to retrace our steps and look back to re-assess aspects of our life which may not be ideal, and that is particularly true when Mercury is retrograde.  So take precautions and be careful with communication and any processing of information, but expect that glitches may happen anyway. No need to put your life on hold or delay doing something important!

Jupiter enters Aries on May 10th, and you can read all about that here. Venus is already in Aries, and this infusion of fire will help to shake off some of the fairy dust of the Pisces stellium that’s been in effect over the past month. The challenge of Pisces is to find that boundary line between Jupiterian optimism and Neptunian illusion, and Jupiter moving from Pisces to Aries will hopefully help us to burn through any clouds of confusion. I’m also hoping it will bring an end to the stock market decline.

The lunar eclipse at the Scorpio Moon occurs May 16th at […]

Astrological news this week: Care for the soul with Neptune and Ceres

Astrological update for the week of May 2-9, 2022

art by Amanda Clark

For the first few days of the week we are still under the influence of the April 30 solar eclipse at the Taurus New Moon which is nice grounding influence to help balance the mystic wonder of a Pisces stellium of four planets.

Pisces’ modern ruler Neptune is in a challenging square to Ceres, the planet that inspires us to care and nurture our physical bodies, so it’s important right now not to become so wrapped up in the Pisces care for the soul that we forget the other two legs of the stool, the body and mind.  The exact aspect was May 1st, but the influence will remain in effect for a couple of weeks and then Jupiter will square Ceres later in the month (May 18th).  This could lead to a tendency towards over-indulgence so establishing a good habit now will really help us to maintain our balance throughout the month.

One of the four Pisces planets is Mars, and when Mars (action) is in Pisces we often wonder where our “get up and go” went as the old saying goes. Taurus isn’t a very energetic sign either, so we may feel that it’s difficult to motivate ourselves.  This will start to lift when Venus (relating) enters Aries on May 2nd and begins to invigorate our interactions with others.

Jupiter, planet of optimism and expansion, is in a harmonious aspect to Pluto which peaks on May 3rd, and the entire first week of May will be infused by a boost of self-confidence and a clear path to our goals. The faster moving planets are helpful now with this endeavor; the Sun and […]

Jupiter in Aries May 10: Forging a new direction

art by Catrin Welz Stein

The story of Jupiter.

The astrological meaning of Jupiter can be deduced from his position in Roman mythology and modern astronomy: As King of the Gods he was the highest ruler and presided over law and order as well as the fates of men and women. Noble in nature, he represents the search for the highest expression of human life.  As the One who fulfilled requests and wishes, Jupiter has come to be associated with good fortune and luck. As the largest of all of the planets, it symbolizes expansion of all things including expansion of human understanding. Jupiter is often called the “greater benefic,” (with Venus as the “lesser benefic”) and the bringer of good fortune. I tend to think that Jupiter’s association with good luck tends to be the result of the optimism and faith that Jupiter brings to the table, enhancing a positive outlook which itself will bring good fortune.

Jupiter is a partner to Mercury in their rulership of the mutable (flexible and adaptable) signs: Jupiter rules Pisces and Sagittarius, and Mercury rules Virgo and Gemini. Under Mercury’s rulership of Virgo and Gemini we are working with the “small mind” – the personal viewpoints and opinions and ways to measure the world. Under Jupiter’s rulership of Pisces and Sagittarius we seek a broader perspective – that of the “higher mind” or “universal mind.”  We seek expansion and growth and tend to become unsatisfied with the status quo.

Because of its association with good fortune, Jupiter is considered a powerful ally in the chart and that is true to an extent, but Jupiter’s tendency to overdo everything can lead to trouble. And that brings us […]
