Jupiter in Capricorn

When the King of the Gods meets the King of the Underworld: Jupiter conjunct Pluto in 2020

Jupiter conjunct plutoJupiter is the planet from which the kindly word “jovial” derives and which is said to act as the Greater Benefic in the lives of men.  It expands our world both physically and mentally, instilling a desire for greater knowledge and high philosophies. As a result, Jupiter has a tendency to constantly be pushing boundaries (boundaries are associated with Saturn) and resists responsibility in the name of freedom.   Under the influence of Jupiter we seek to know god, or to be god as the quality of hubris is woven into the Jupiterian archetype.

But Jupiter also describes the search of humanity for meaning.  We are born into the world with no idea what our purpose is, or what the cosmic truth is all about.  Our lives are filled with a search for that meaning – a paradigm or theology that will help us to make sense of human existence.  Even those who believe that life has no meaning are espousing a philosophy, and that too is ruled by Jupiter.  When the personal search for meaning as represented by Jupiter encounters the force of transformation represented by Pluto, there is bound to be a paradigm shift.

To recap some recent astrological history:

In 2019, Saturn (restriction and challenge) began to align in a conjunction to Pluto (destruction and regeneration) with both planets in Capricorn, the sign that represents the societal structures on which we build our lives and communities.  Pluto has been in Capricorn since 2008 when it began to tear down global economic systems and force many of us to rebuild our lives in different ways.  (It should be noted that after the economic collapse when Pluto entered Capricorn there was a historic bull […]

The meaning of Saturn in Aquarius

art by Krystle Marie Smith

Before we can understand the meaning of Saturn in Aquarius, we need to understand Saturn’s role in human existence.  This is especially important because as the traditional ruler of Aquarius, Saturn is said to be in its domicile in Aquarius (as well as in Capricorn).

Understanding astrological Saturn

Before the discovery of the modern planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (not to mention Chiron, the asteroids, and all of the other points that are now used to some extent by astrologers) there were seven planets and lights: the Sun, the Moon, and the five visible planets.  Saturn marked the outermost boundary of the solar system, and was surrounded by rings of containment.  These physical attributes reflect the astrological depiction of Saturn as governing limitations, physical boundaries such as gateposts and doorways, and the limitations we place on ourselves through self-doubt and fears.  Saturn was traditionally viewed as the Lord of Death – unlike the modern planet Pluto, which is associated with death as the ending of one aspect of life and the beginning of something new, death under Saturn is finite and final.

Saturn (in the northern hemisphere where astrology developed) is associated with the two zodiac signs of winter: Aquarius and Capricorn: mid-December through mid-February.  These are cold and dark times, where social isolation and the lack of sun can lead to depression and loneliness, other attributes of Saturn.  And yet Saturn is also a treasure trove of material success – the hard work of Saturn leads us eventually to mastery of the material world and the potential for an abundance of riches. Under the influence of Saturn we are sometimes weighted down with responsibility and a relentless drive for career […]

Compression and release: 2020 cycles of Jupiter to Neptune and Pluto

Thanks to Bibliophilia for the art

There are two cycles of significance involving Jupiter this year, one is a harmonious sextile to Neptune and the other a challenging conjunction to Pluto.

Jupiter has been in Capricorn since early December when it joined a cluster of Capricorn planets for an earthy dose of realism and practicality.  Briefly, Jupiter  teaches us to expand our horizons and to learn the value of positive thinking; under Jupiter’s influence we gain new confidence and the ability to trust that life is carrying us in just the right direction. When poorly aspected, Jupiter can inflict a reckless and overconfident approach to life resulting in complacency, but it’s safe to say that this virtually never occurs when Jupiter is in Capricorn where the expansive principle of Jupiter must operate within the confines of Capricornian structure.

On February 20th, 2020 Jupiter will make the first of three harmonious sextiles to Neptune.  Jupiter is related to Neptune through their shared rulership of Pisces, but where Jupiter is a personal planet and rules in the personal realm, Neptune is a transpersonal and transformational planet.  The combination of Jupiter and Neptune, linked in harmony, has the potential to bring out our best selves and put all of our creative imagination to work (after all, Jupiter is in Capricorn so some work must be done!).  This is a lovely aspect full of divine inspiration and optimism that will help to ameliorate some of the darkness we’ve passed through with the heavy emphasis of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn.  [Update 3/20/20: It’s been called to my attention that under the spell of the Coronavirus we have not been able to glean the benefits of […]

Planetary news this week! Jupiter enters Capricorn, and a message from the past

The big news this week is Jupiter bring its expansive powers of confidence and optimism into the usually sensible and practical sign of Capricorn.  Historically, financial markets have done very well when Jupiter is in its own sign of Sagittarius – economics rely on optimism of the masses to stay buoyed up, and when that optimism begins to crack we start to see a contraction.  When citizens don’t feel optimistic about their future they stop spending, and then factories slow down production, and there is a domino effect leading to a downturn for investors.

All year we have seen Saturn dancing with Pluto in Capricorn, teasing the beginning of a contraction, but Jupiter in sunny Sagittarius has kept the wolves at bay.  It’s still unclear what will happen with Jupiter in Capricorn but as my clients know, I have been advising caution.  This would not be the ideal time to start a new business requiring a capital investment, or to make risky investments.  We will know more once we see what happens when Saturn and Pluto formally collide in mid-January.

Meanwhile, this month with Jupiter in Capricorn is ideal for taking the expansive goals and dreams you may have formulated over the past year with Jupiter in Sagittarius, and bring them down to earth with practical plans and strategies to make them happen.  This is the domain of Capricorn, and if we understand how this all works we can make this the best year ever, despite the potential of negativity if there is an economic contraction.  Read more about Jupiter in Capricorn here.

This week Jupiter approaches a challenging square to Chiron which culminates on December 8.  Chiron’s job, as I see it, is to unlock the padlocks […]

Jupiter in Capricorn, December 2, 2019 – December 19, 2020

Jupiter in CapricornJupiter, the planet of optimism and faith, will leave its own sign of Sagittarius for Capricorn on December 2, 2019.  Jupiter  teaches us to expand our horizons and to learn the value of positive thinking; under Jupiter’s influence we gain new confidence and the ability to trust that life is carrying us in just the right direction. When poorly aspected, Jupiter can inflict a reckless and overconfident approach to life resulting in complacency, but it’s safe to say that this virtually never occurs when Jupiter is in Capricorn.

Capricorn is the sign in which we put aside our small desires and our feelings and insecurities in order to master the material world.  Each sign reacts to the one before, and as a planet changes signs its influence shifts dramatically.  In Sagittarius, the sign of its rulership, Jupiter has reached a pinnacle of optimism which has contrasted nicely with the potential stress of Saturn, currently in its own sign of Capricorn.  Where Sagittarius is expansive and social but not always concerned with working towards a goal, Capricorn’s grounded nature can be hard and cold, with a drive to succeed.

Jupiter is said to be in its “fall” in Capricorn under the traditional debilities scheme: Jupiter’s natural tendency towards growth and expansion is curtailed under Capricorn’s relentless drive for a practical outcome.  That may sound “bad” because we are used to thinking of restriction and limitation as a bad thing but in actuality, the blend of faith and optimism with a practical drive to create effective structures virtually assures success and a life of greater effectiveness.   Jupiter inspires lofty goals, and these goals are more easily achieved when cloaked with the drive and grounded effort motivated by Capricorn.

As Jupiter makes […]
