Planetary news this week: Sagittarius New Moon and Jupiter rules the sky

Astrological update for the week of November 21-28, 2022

Sagittarius season. Having made it through Scorpio season, the time of Samhain and Hallowe’en when the veil between the worlds is thin and we move into the dark time (here in the northern hemisphere), Sagittarius season comes along to bring a lighter viewpoint as we head into the holiday celebrations. Venus (love) and Mercury (mind) have already made the shift into Sagittarius, and this week the Sun joins the party, followed swiftly by the Moon the next day.

Sagittarius is a fire sign, a sign of action and initiation, and under Jupiter’s rulership it bestows an innate sense of good fortune and a sunny optimism. We learned as children reading “The Little Engine that Could” that if you think you can do something or be something, you CAN do and be those things. These are Sagittarius lessons. Sagittarius tends to bring out the social aspects of the most reclusive of us, and that’s why it’s the perfect sign for these times.

Every aspect of astrology has a light side and a dark side, even Sagittarius. Under the influence of Sagittarius, whether in the natal chart or under a Sagittarius planetary cycle, we can be blind to anything which restricts our freedom to explore and pursue our overoptimistic agendas, and this can sometimes result in negative consequences so moderation is a good quality to keep at hand under these strong Sagittarius influences.

Sagittarius New Moon. The New Moon on the 23rd at 5:57 pm EST is a bounty of expansive energies, with four planetary bodies in Sagittarius and really nothing to stand in the way of our hopes and dreams becoming reality. The New Moon marks […]

Planetary news this week: Eclipses and Scorpio dominate the energetic frequencies

Astrological update for the week of October 23 – November 2

(I will be traveling so next week’s report will be a few days late and is included in this one.)

Scorpio. The big news that will dominate the week is the infusion of Scorpio energies that are emerging right now. On Sunday the Sun and Venus both entered Scorpio, and just after midnight EDT on Tuesday the Moon enters Scorpio just before the solar eclipse at the Scorpio New Moon on October 25, 2022 at 6:48 am EDT. And Mercury will enter Scorpio on October 29th.

Scorpio is associated with intense emotions – the dark feelings such as jealousy and hatred which normally don’t see the light of day.  However, anything which we hide in the darkness never has the opportunity to become transformed.  Scorpio fearlessly plumbs these depths of darkness and supports us in our quest to regain the power that we have lost through self-denial and diminishment.

Each sign reacts to the one before it, and in this shift from Venus-ruled Libra to Mars-ruled Scorpio we leave behind the polite niceties of Libra to dig into the Truth that often hides from the light of day. Scorpio season is followed in late November by Sagittarius, where the intensity is left behind in favor of a sunnier optimism.

Solar eclipse October 25. This Scorpio eclipse follows on the heels of the Aries Full Moon, and with both Aries and Scorpio ruled by Mars (Scorpio’s modern ruler is Pluto but Mars is still very much in charge), it’s no surprise that this is a time of intense warrior energy, dominated by female archetypes. The Sun and Moon are thought to represent the male and female […]

Jupiter in Aries May 10: Forging a new direction

art by Catrin Welz Stein

The story of Jupiter.

The astrological meaning of Jupiter can be deduced from his position in Roman mythology and modern astronomy: As King of the Gods he was the highest ruler and presided over law and order as well as the fates of men and women. Noble in nature, he represents the search for the highest expression of human life.  As the One who fulfilled requests and wishes, Jupiter has come to be associated with good fortune and luck. As the largest of all of the planets, it symbolizes expansion of all things including expansion of human understanding. Jupiter is often called the “greater benefic,” (with Venus as the “lesser benefic”) and the bringer of good fortune. I tend to think that Jupiter’s association with good luck tends to be the result of the optimism and faith that Jupiter brings to the table, enhancing a positive outlook which itself will bring good fortune.

Jupiter is a partner to Mercury in their rulership of the mutable (flexible and adaptable) signs: Jupiter rules Pisces and Sagittarius, and Mercury rules Virgo and Gemini. Under Mercury’s rulership of Virgo and Gemini we are working with the “small mind” – the personal viewpoints and opinions and ways to measure the world. Under Jupiter’s rulership of Pisces and Sagittarius we seek a broader perspective – that of the “higher mind” or “universal mind.”  We seek expansion and growth and tend to become unsatisfied with the status quo.

Because of its association with good fortune, Jupiter is considered a powerful ally in the chart and that is true to an extent, but Jupiter’s tendency to overdo everything can lead to trouble. And that brings us […]

Astrological update for the week of December 27 2021: A New Year and a New Moon

This week we have a new month, a new year, and a Capricorn New Moon – an abundance of fresh new energies to help sweep away the cobwebs and help us to have a fresh start.  No matter how well my life is going I always love that feeling that each morning is a new day and a new opportunity to awaken in a different way.

If you missed my 2022 forecast you can catch up here. Spoiler alert: We are not out of the woods yet. 😃  Meanwhile though, this week Jupiter enters Pisces on December 28th/29th which will give us a push into the dreamy optimism of Jupiter traveling through its own sign. Jupiter was already in Pisces for part of 2021 and this is its last vacation before entering Aries in May 2022 when the energies will become more forceful and dedicated towards self-preservation rather than the communal justice that Jupiter seeks in Pisces.

Venus has been within range of a conjunction to Pluto for the past few weeks and it will finally begin to separate after this week.  If you’ve been experiencing difficulty in relationships of all kinds we can blame this aspect between the planet of connection (Venus) and the planet of destruction (Pluto).  Still, Venus is retrograde for another few weeks and we are looking back over the past to see where repairs can be made in problematic areas.

Finally, the New Moon in Capricorn takes place on January 2nd – a new beginning in the creation of structures (Capricorn) to serve our new reality. I suppose technically reality won’t change much between December 31 and January 2, but this is such an excellent opportunity to facilitate a new resolve and a […]

The astrology of 2022: Birth pangs for the New Age

Deviant Art

First: A look back at 2021.

Following on the heels of 2020, a year when the astrology (Capricorn stellium and Saturn/Pluto conjunction, along with a record-breaking period of retrograde planets) spoke of repression and control as the world locked down to battle the Coronavirus, we were all hoping for a brighter future and as I titled my 2021 forecast, “A new way forward.”  However, I closed with this paragraph and I think we can agree that this is a little truer than we had imagined:

Where 2020 marked a breakdown phase thanks to a Capricornian cluster, 2021 is symbolized by the Aquarian ideals of fraternity, brotherhood and equality. These ideals are somewhat impersonal, and in order to achieve greater freedom we must understand that some loss of personal liberty is essential. Astrological conflicts require integration and resolution of conflicting opposites, and in 2021 the need to find that integration and balance will become a life or death proposition and likely result in major shifts of global power and also personal priorities.

The final exact challenging square between Saturn in Aquarius (control for the sake of the collective) and Uranus in Taurus (breaking out of paradigms, shifting values and shattering ideals) occurs at the end of December 2021, but between August and October the dance between these two planets will tighten to a one degree separation from exactitude. This suggests that the struggles and civil unrest that we’ve seen over this past year will abate, but will not be over completely any time soon.

Jupiter in Pisces, conjunct Neptune

Jupiter is the traditional ruler of Pisces (with Neptune being the modern ruler), and Jupiter and Neptune share an expansive view of the world, and a desire to
