Bring on the fire with the Aries New Moon: March 24, 2020

We have had a dearth of the fire element for quite a few months now.  Mars, the fire planet, was in the sign of Sagittarius in mid-January, but a stellium of planets in earthy Capricorn acted as a blanket to dampen the fire energy.  In practical terms, when there is adequate representation of the fire element among the planets, it becomes easier to access the motivation and inspiration of fire.  We have instead been under the influence of earth primarily, which is practical and good for creating structures and plans, especially in Capricorn which is the sign of achievement and success.

Over the past week or so, Mars (currently in Capricorn) has been traveling through the Capricorn stellium of Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn, and under the new reality of the Coronavirus which requires greater restriction (Saturn 29 degrees Capricorn) of movement (Mars), we have seen quite a few people rebelling against (Mars/Jupiter) the call for isolation.  Some countries are using police to keep people in their homes, and in my lifetime I have not seen such a powerful example of Saturn in Capricorn.

On the day I write this (March 23), we have just passed through the portal of the Vernal Equinox, the Aries point which is ruled by Mars. Mars has just traveled by Jupiter and Pluto and the Martian energy of aggression and fiery rhetoric as well as power struggles has been intense.  We have seen this in the struggle of governments around the world to agree on measures to try to contain the virus, and perhaps in our own homes as we spend more time together than we may be used to.

Into this mix comes the New Moon in Aries.  Aries is the first sign of […]

Aquarius Full Moon, July 22 2013

Aquarius Full Moon Photo from CaptainKimo.com

We are in the midst of a very active planetary environment right now.   Mercury has just turned direct after a retrograde period, and Uranus and Pluto are still creating tension that will require us to let go to the force of irrefutable change.  Mars aligns with Jupiter today, evoking a burst of energy and activity that will help us to break free of any delays imposed by Mercury’s retrograde passage.  The watery grand trine (see the sidebar for a link to more information) is in full force and while trines (harmonious aspect between planets) generally foster ease and good will, they can also lock us into a loop of complacency and resistance to the kind of shifts that Uranus and Pluto are putting into motion.

Into the midst of the strong watery energy with so many planets in Cancer and the watery emphasis of the Grand Trine comes the Aquarius Full Moon on the 22nd. Aquarius is the sign of rational thinking – Aquarius doesn’t understand or care for the kind of emotionality that Cancer brings to the table and prefers a more reasoned and scientific approach.

The Sun has just entered Leo and the Self longs to be expressed, while the Aquarius Moon seeks a more transpersonal expression. This polarity can be difficult to balance since each side struggles against the other. Who am I relative to my standing in the community? Where are my needs important relative to those around me? Confronting these issues in the watery realm of Cancer and the Grand Trine can be challenging and this Full Moon illuminates the path to reason.

You can expect this Full Moon to offer a counterpoint to the intuitive creativity and feelings that are highlighted this […]

Barack Obama releases birth certificate (again)

Barack Obama birth certificateAstrologers are always hunting for birth information, so we were the first ones on the trail of Barack Obama’s birth certificate.  Not that we believed he might be from Kenya, but we wanted to be able to construct an accurate birthchart. You can read the thread of my articles on the subject here along with my astrological profiles of the President.

At the moment Mars and Jupiter are moving into a conjunction that will culminate just after midnight (EDT) on Sunday May 1st, and right now they are within two degrees of each other and of the President’s progressed ascendant.  This may be a little too  geeky for some of my readers, but the simplification here is that the planet of aggression and inspiration (Mars) is aligning with the planet of expansion and opportunity (Jupiter) in Mars’s own sign of Aries, the sign of self-motivation and courageous pursuit of one’s Truth.

It’s hard to conjure up anyone who exemplifies the combination of Marsy aggression and Jupiter’s braggodocio better than Donald Trump, whose relentless pursuit of Obama’s birth certificate over the past few weeks led to the President’s announcement yesterday.  And as it happens, Mr. Trump’s chart shows Mars sitting right on the ascendant where it becomes a part of his persona.

The progressed chart shows our evolution through time, and the progressed ascendant reveals our changing image as we project it to others, and as we see ourselves.  With Mars and Jupiter, both in Aries, transiting President Obama’s progressed ascendant he is asserting (Mars) more authority and his poll numbers are already up as a result of the announcement yesterday.

Warning: political rant ahead

On a non-astrological note, many of the President’s critics […]

The End of Tony Blair

With Gemini rising (an appearance of flexibility and adaptability) and a twelfth house Sun (showing an individual who prefers his real agenda to remain hidden), it’s no wonder that Tony Blair has been under criticism throughout his career for dishonesty, excessive “spin” and a lack of integrity in his lifestyle choices. The appellation “Tony Blur” that has often been given to him expresses the confusion and delusion that often results when the Sun finds itself in the twelfth house of that which is hidden. (See Astrodatabank for birthchart.)

In Blair’s college days he modeled himself after Mick Jagger, and his first career was as a would-be rock promoter. Giving that up for law studies at Oxford, he played guitar in a rock band. However, soon after beginning his law studies he announced to friends his desire to become prime minister.

Blair joined the Labour party soon after graduation from Oxford. He tried unsuccessfully for a couple of seats in local elections but he was able to gain a footing in the Labour party. At this time he described himself as a Socialist, yet he sent his children to a private school that was criticized for its elitist policies. There has been a disconnect between many of Tony Blair’s professed ideals and the programs which he has worked to implement in Britain. Still, he was one of the most popular prime ministers in the history of Britain, winning an unprecedented third term. His government has overseen a period of economic growth and lowered unemployment as well as a higher standard of living. Yet his unholy alliance with George W. Bush in the pursuit of war in Iraq has cost him his political career.

Tony Blair’s birthchart shows that he has a Taurus Sun in the twelfth house: stubborn and […]

David Blaine – face to face with death

David Blaine
“I believe that fear of life brings a greater fear of death. “
David Blaine

What makes someone want to suspend themselves in a plexiglass box over the Thames and fast for 44 days? What inspires a person to spend 61 hours encased in ice, or stand on a platform on top of a 100 foot pole for 35 hours? As someone for whom the adrenaline rush is a terrifying thing, I had to find out.

David Blaine (chart) is an Aries, and therefore ruled by the warrior archetype of Mars. Aries seeks adventure and is fueled by courage. For an Aries individual, facing danger brings them into a reality where they are able to fully express themselves and the energy of the Mars archetype. Blaine has a triple conjunction of Chiron/Sun/Venus in Aries. Venus bestows good fortune and an attractive persona, and Chiron conjunct the Sun shows that Blaine suffered an early wound (Chiron) in his ability to expess his own identity. Blaine never knew his father (represented by the Sun), and began to learn magic at the age of 4. The world of magic and illusion likely took him out of the pain of the Chiron/Sun conjunction. Blaine’s chart has little water that would anchor him into his emotions, and he will have a tendency to navigate difficult emotional waters through the realm of ideas (Mars in Aquarius).

Mars in Aquarius has a detached quality, and this Aquarian Mars keeps him floating in a place where there is no fear. His Mars is conjunct Jupiter (also in Aquarius), which expands his confidence (Jupiter) and causes a sense of being beyond the boundaries (Jupiter) of ordinary men, bigger than life. There can be a […]
