Mars in Aquarius

Is Elon Musk the harbinger of the Aquarian Age?

Elon Musk is in the news again, this time for attempting a hostile takeover of Twitter.  He is such a fascinating character – clearly so brilliant, but also kind of a mad genius and a bit nutty. Just the type I like to profile. 😃

The astrology of Elon Musk.

Unfortunately we don’t have a birth time for Musk (there is a birth time on Astrotheme but it comes from an unverified source in India), but even without it we can see some very interesting things (noon chart shown with Sun on the ascendant).  Musk was born under a conjunction of the Sun and Mercury in Cancer, a sign of feeling and emotion, and this conjunction is tightly squared by both Chiron and Uranus. As I have noted before, Sun/Mercury conjunction individuals tend to be of great intelligence, and when Mercury is ahead of the Sun as it is here there can be a tendency, literally, of the mind getting ahead of the Self. The fact that Uranus, planet of innovation and radical change, is locked in a strong square aspect to the Sun and Mercury enhances the ability to think outside the box as well as inspire somewhat impulsive and radical behavior even when the Sun and Mercury are in Cancer which tends to seek greater security and a sense of safety.

The emotionality of the Sun and Mercury in Cancer is easily activated due to a strong square from Chiron to the Sun and Mercury. Chiron is in Aries, suggesting that the wound (Chiron) is to the evolution of the Self (Aries) and in fact Chiron is the only planet in a fire sign in this chart other than Neptune which is a generational outer planet. When a chart lacks a certain element, the personality traits […]

Sunday poetry: The world was made to be free in.

Art by Melissa Chen

The yearning to be free is a hallmark of the Aquarian energies in which we find ourselves. Mercury and Saturn have been in Aquarius, and now they are joined by Mars and Venus. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia is creating ripples of political conflict that sets basic rights of freedom against authoritarianism.  We cannot change the world, but we can change our own inner state of self-repression and despair. Towards this end I offer a beautiful poem by David Whyte.  ❤️

Sweet Darkness
When your eyes are tired
the world is tired also.
When your vision has gone
no part of the world can find you.

Time to go into the dark
where the night has eyes
to recognize its own.
There you can be sure
you are not beyond love.

The dark will be your womb
tonight.
The night will give you a horizon
further than you can see.

You must learn one thing:
the world was made to be free in.
Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.

Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn
anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive
is too small for you.

Planetary news this week: Jupiter/Pluto dance and Mars in Aquarius

astrologyDeviant Art.  Jupiter’s expansive beneficence (is that a word??)  has been intertwined in a couple of lovely dances this summer with Neptune (culminating August 8 2018) and with Pluto (culminating September 12 2018).  These are the final interactions in a series that began in December with Jupiter trine Neptune and in January with Jupiter sextile Pluto.

The outer planets are transformational forces – unlike the visible personal planets which address personality factors and tendencies, the transformational planets inspire personal evolution and sometimes bring about events in our lives which unfold into a dramatic change of some kind. While Jupiter’s influence tends to be personal – it can bring about good luck and good fortune and instill confidence and optimism.  When harmonizing in a trine with Neptune, the planet of transcendence and creative imagination, Jupiter facilitates the flow of consciousness expansion and increased awareness

Where trines are easy and flowing aspects that bring harmony between planets, sextiles are more dynamic and add a little excitement. In sextile to Pluto, Jupiter acts as a guide to help us into Pluto’s Underworld where the great treasures can be found – not only the treasures of the psyche and the magic of the great philosophical mysteries, but also the very keys to unlocking the mystery of Self Knowledge.

But all is not rosy in the planetary sphere – a challenging square between Saturn (tests and hardship)  and Chiron (emotional wounds which require release) which was in play in 2017 has returned to align within a degree.  Square aspects between planets often motivate some sort of crisis in order to achieve resolution, but when the aspect is super close like this one but doesn’t ever quite align, there may just be an unsettled […]

More musings on the Egyptian revolution

Egypt astrologyI was listening to the BBC news coverage of the momentous events in Egypt, and one of the journalists remarked that the protesters in Egypt no longer have any fear of the oppressive government.  His point was that once the inhibitions of fear have been broken there is no turning back, that any attempt to reassert control will just inflame the situation.

This comment, and the events unfolding in Egypt, perfectly mirror the astrological symbolism at work here.  Jupiter, bringing an expansive confidence and urge for a life with more meaning, is in Aries which is all about bursting through one’s fear and finding the courage deep within to fight for that which is most important.

An Egyptian American expressed it here:

As the people of my homeland, Egypt, stage a popular uprising against the 30-year dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak, the White Stripes keep singing in my head: “I’m gonna fight ’em off /A seven-nation army couldn’t hold me back!”

I don’t know if Jack and Meg of the White Stripes are watching the breathtaking developments taking place in my country. However, their thumping, pumping “Seven Nation Army” is a perfect anthem for the defiance and adrenaline-fueled determination that must be propelling the tens of thousands of courageous, protesting Egyptians.

And against what odds!

In addition to Jupiter entering Aries, the Sun and Mars have been within a few degrees of a conjunction in Aquarius over the past week, a conjunction which doesn’t culminate until February 4th.  Since the Sun and Mars began to align we have seen protests spread like wildfire throughout North Africa and the middle east.  Mars is the ruler of Aries, the sign that Jupiter is in right now, and the fire […]

Robert Hawkins: Astrological profile of the Mall Shooter

Last Thursday, December 5, a young man walked into a shopping mall in Omaha Nebraska and shot thirteen people, eight of them fatally, before turning the gun on himself. He left a suicide note saying that he was a piece of s&*t and that now he would be famous.

Nineteen year old Robert Hawkins had a long and troubled history of rage and depression. At the age of three his parents divorced, and by the age of six he was in trouble at school for biting and hitting his teachers. He became the subject of a messy custody dispute that included allegations of cocaine and drug use by Robert’s mother. Robert’s father subsequently gained sole custody and Robert was raised along with his father’s two children with his new wife. By the time he was fourteen (the age when transiting Saturn opposes its place in the natal chart) he had been hospitalized twice for psychiatric illness. Counselors reported that Robert longed for the attention of his parents.

In 2002 he was sent to a treatment center for threatening to kill his stepmother, and made a ward of the state. He was treated for depression and was in foster care and various institutions and in 2005 was convicted of felony drug possession. In mid-2006 he moved in with two friends and their mother because of problems at home, but when his girlfriend broke up with him a few months ago his fragile mental condition began to deteriorate. He was arrested November 24 for underage possession of alcohol, and lost his job at McDonald’s on December 2.

Hawkins’ chart
shows a rage problem, but certainly his chart is not more troubled than many others. His Taurus Sun is in a tight square to Mars in Aquarius which shows a tendency […]
