Mars in Leo

The meaning of Mars in Virgo in 2021

art by Molee on Deviant Art

For the past month or so, Mars has been traveling through Leo in close connection to both Saturn and Uranus, translating the challenging square between them which is the story of 2021.  The energies of Saturn = control and repression vs Uranus = radical change and rebellion are evident everywhere in 2021, from the attempted overthrow of governments to the riots over mask policies.  The addition of Mars in Leo, acting as double fire since Mars is a fire planet, didn’t really help matters. Wildfire season came early to the American West, and record breaking heatwaves spread across western Canada and the Northwest of the US as well as elsewhere in the world.  A gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico set the waters on fire.  It’s not been an easy summer although it doesn’t compare with 2020 when we had seven planets retrograde for months.

In any case, Mars left Leo for Virgo late yesterday, and that should cool things off a bit and help us to find more stability in our life especially later today when the Moon shifts from fiery Aries to grounded Taurus for a couple of days.  When the desire and motivation of Mars meets the organizational capacity of Virgo, we can accomplish great things.  We have been short on Earth energy recently, and with both Mars and Venus in Virgo we will be better able to attend to the small details of life that give us a sense of security. More importantly, because Virgo is a modest sign that does not relish conflict and instead prefers that life operate smoothly with all details locked in place, this may help to resolve some of […]

Mars opposes Jupiter today – take a bold step!

art by Laurie Bain Hamilton

The fire planet Mars, fueling us with passion and drive and teaching us to set boundaries, is at the very last degree of Leo in a last ditch effort to squeeze every bit of excitement out of life before moving into Virgo this afternoon (EDT).  Mars is opposing Jupiter today, and there is a great deal of positive energy available to us now.  Mars activates the potential for Jupiter to expand and create abundance and prosperous feelings.  But in its role as God of War, Mars can also activate the aggressive side of our natures and encourage strife and conflict (Mars) for the sake of our beliefs (Jupiter).  This isn’t always a bad thing, but under this influence it can get out of hand if not approached with conscious sensitivity.

This aspect from Mars to Jupiter can be somewhat strident and obnoxious. However, it can also give us the courage that we need to push through a barrier that would otherwise be difficult even though the aspect lasts for only a couple of days. If we approach this time with awareness, this can be a lucky time in which doors open and opportunities are presented to us.  In order to accomplish this, spend some time to pay attention to how your beliefs are affecting your current reality, and where some tweaking might be needed in order to create the kind of balance required by this planetary cycle.  Where do you make yourself smaller and less significant?  Where do you allow your desires to overcome your reason?  How do you balance your beliefs with your other values?

Once Mars makes the shift into Virgo it will calm things down, but also tamp down […]

7.28.21 – Jupiter back in Aquarius, and a burst of energy Mars at 29 degrees

artist unknown

I wrote about Jupiter retrograding back into Aquarius a few days ago and you can catch up here if you missed it. When Jupiter is retrograde (as we observe its motion from Earth) we tend to look backwards at lost opportunities, or else we are forced to retrace our steps in order to achieve the expansion which Jupiter always urges. We’re certainly seeing this in the world today as the expansion of the Delta variant begins to see a backsliding of the opening up of the world that everyone was hoping for.  And this comes in the midst of the social disruption created by the Saturn/Uranus square: Compression (Saturn) vs Radical Release (Uranus).  This is a good time to look back and reassess any areas that may be holding you back from new opportunities and an expanded future so that when Jupiter turns direct in December you’ll be ready!

The Moon enters Aries today for a fiery burst of energy, both physical and mental.  Mars, the fire planet, is at the critical (aka anaretic) degree (29) of Leo where it can be most potent – like the finale in a fireworks show, at 29 degrees Mars will sometimes burn off any energy it has remaining in a sign before moving on to the next.  This is all happening in Leo, the sign which focuses on personal satisfaction so this will be highlighted until tomorrow when Mars settles down in Virgo. ❤️

Mars in Leo, August 27 2013

Art by Frank Frizetta Art by Frank Frizetta

Mars leaves Cancer today for the powerful sign of Leo.  Mars is a fire planet, and when it travels through the fire signs the energy of Mars is expressed more fully and with more power and intensity.

While in Cancer we may have found it difficult to motivate ourselves to take any kind of action, since emotions and feelings were more important under the Cancerian influence.  This infusion of fire will likely instigate a fair amount of activity so it is wise to be somewhat careful not to allow the fire to burn out of control.

Mars provides enthusiasm and fuels our desires, and in Leo those desires become more about fulfilling our individual needs for pleasure and for fun.  Leo is a celebratory sign – there is an open and generous heart and an ability to see the positive even in the midst of darkness.

The energy of Mars in Leo is infectious and can help to motivate even the most sluggish of individuals.  There is some danger that the Leo openness can expand the aggressive force of Mars, and because Leo is a fixed sign there can be a tendency to become stuck in ones desires and find it difficult to seek alternative pathways.

Mars in Leo will align in a strong square to Saturn in Scorpio around September 5-10th which will cool our heels and remind us to use caution before exploding out of control.  A plan to utilize this sudden infusion of new energy will help us to get the most out of it!

Taurus Full Moon November 2

The Taurus Full Moon occurs when the Moon in Taurus opposes the Sun in Scorpio, creating a 180 degree angle and a tension between the conscious mind (Sun) and the emotional instinctive reactions (Moon), and the challenging square of both luminaries to Mars will definitely spice up the Full Moon!

Mars is in Leo now, where the role of personal development is emphasized, and the Full Moon occurs in the sign of Taurus. Taurus is focused on stability and physical security, as well as the peace and serenity that comes from a life that is full of contentment and material gifts. This Full Moon could highlight any areas of our life where our personal ego gets in the way of our ability to achieve comfort in our lives, but will also help to energize us to fulfill the dreams of the Full Moon.

Any lunation, or lunar event, encompasses all of the planetary combinations that occur at the time of the event. Taurus’s ruler Venus, the planet of love and beauty as well as harmony and peace forms a harmonious trine to Neptune on the day of the Full Moon. This harmonious dance between the planet of spirituality (Neptune) and the goddess of love helps to wrap our experience in a veil of magic and conscious awareness which helps us to utilize the energy of Mars in a more productive way.

Of course the approaching square from Saturn to Pluto is also a part of the lunation, adding a touch of darkness […]
