Mars in Leo

Planetary news this week: Choices & decisions under the fixed cross

Astrological update for the week of May 22, 2023

Mars in Leo and the dance with Jupiter and Pluto. Mars moved into Leo last week, heightening our drive to seek pleasure and joyful experiences that bring happiness and delight. However, Mars is not always the best ally as it can be impulsive and reckless and sometimes prone to anger and rage, especially when facing challenging square aspects from both Pluto and Jupiter as it did last week.

I wrote about this in last week’s forecast as this alignment began to take shape: “There is some danger that the Leo openness can expand the aggressive force of Mars, and because Leo is a fixed sign there can be a tendency to become stuck in ones desires and find it difficult to seek alternative pathways. This is especially true at this time because as we saw above, Mars will be activating Jupiter for greater self-righteousness, and challenging Pluto for problems ranging from minor conflicts to outright violence. The presence of the Nodes show that there is a fated story here, but also that guidance is available if we only listen.”

The challenging aspect to Pluto is waning now though, and the square to Jupiter and the lunar nodes will likely wrap up a question that arose last week. Any Mars aspect can bring success if we approach all matters with consideration and thought rather than an impulsive race to be done with something.

Here’s what else you need to know this week (Dates and times are for the Eastern time zone, here is a time zone converter to adjust for your locality.)

Monday May 22. Monday is packed with good vibes, and although that Mars/Jupiter alignment will be […]

Sunday Mars in Leo inspiration: Joy is not meant to be a crumb

artist unknown?

Mars has just entered the sign of Leo, motivating and inspiring us to look for joy in the smallest things. Mars is opposed by Pluto over the next couple of days which could put a serious kibosh on this search for happiness, but Mars will be in Leo  until July 10th.

To help us discover more about how to bring joy into our hearts I’ve called on Mary Oliver and her wonderful poem.  I ask that this week you do something kind for yourself that brings you some happiness. 💖

Don’t Hesitate

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,
don’t hesitate.

Give in to it.

There are plenty
of lives and whole towns destroyed or about
to be.

We are not wise, and not very often
kind. And much can never be redeemed.

Still, life has some possibility left.

Perhaps this
is its way of fighting back, that sometimes
something happens better than all the riches
or power in the world.

It could be anything,
but very likely you notice it in the instant
when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the
case.

Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid
of its plenty.

Joy is not made to be a crumb.

Planetary news this week: Taurus New Moon and a challenge to overcome

Astrological update for the week of May 15-22, 2023

art by Zdenek Moravek

Planets changing signs bring about a shift in human consciousness, and when three planetary bodies change signs in one week it can be very enervating. There is a strong Taurus signature, with Jupiter entering Taurus and a Taurus New Moon, so the drive for peaceful experiences is a strong one. However, the Sun enters Gemini at the end of the week and opens up the door to Gemini season which is much more active, so we will want to be prepared for that.

Jupiter in Taurus. Jupiter, the planet of optimism, good fortune, and the search for meaning, enters Taurus on Tuesday where it will remain for about a year. Taurus is a sign of Earthly matters: prosperity, comfort, sensory pleasures – all of these are of greater importance when Jupiter is in Taurus. It’s worth remembering that Taurus is a fixed sign, and while Jupiter is expansive and idealistic, it also inspires religiosity. Jupiter in Taurus can often be somewhat inflexible and we may need to prepare to bend more than is comfortable at times.

Taurus is ruled by Venus, and Venus and Jupiter are known in traditional astrology as benefic planets – generally speaking, they tend to open doors of opportunity and attract positive things. So Jupiter in Taurus over the next twelve month may offer opportunities and some of us may be luckier during this time. This is not a guarantee, though, and too much faith in Jupiter’s bountiful nature could create its own problems and just a reminder, the last time Jupiter went through 2011 there was an economic crisis in the U.S. when a budget could not be […]

The meaning of Mars in Virgo in 2021

art by Molee on Deviant Art

For the past month or so, Mars has been traveling through Leo in close connection to both Saturn and Uranus, translating the challenging square between them which is the story of 2021.  The energies of Saturn = control and repression vs Uranus = radical change and rebellion are evident everywhere in 2021, from the attempted overthrow of governments to the riots over mask policies.  The addition of Mars in Leo, acting as double fire since Mars is a fire planet, didn’t really help matters. Wildfire season came early to the American West, and record breaking heatwaves spread across western Canada and the Northwest of the US as well as elsewhere in the world.  A gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico set the waters on fire.  It’s not been an easy summer although it doesn’t compare with 2020 when we had seven planets retrograde for months.

In any case, Mars left Leo for Virgo late yesterday, and that should cool things off a bit and help us to find more stability in our life especially later today when the Moon shifts from fiery Aries to grounded Taurus for a couple of days.  When the desire and motivation of Mars meets the organizational capacity of Virgo, we can accomplish great things.  We have been short on Earth energy recently, and with both Mars and Venus in Virgo we will be better able to attend to the small details of life that give us a sense of security. More importantly, because Virgo is a modest sign that does not relish conflict and instead prefers that life operate smoothly with all details locked in place, this may help to resolve some of […]

Mars opposes Jupiter today – take a bold step!

art by Laurie Bain Hamilton

The fire planet Mars, fueling us with passion and drive and teaching us to set boundaries, is at the very last degree of Leo in a last ditch effort to squeeze every bit of excitement out of life before moving into Virgo this afternoon (EDT).  Mars is opposing Jupiter today, and there is a great deal of positive energy available to us now.  Mars activates the potential for Jupiter to expand and create abundance and prosperous feelings.  But in its role as God of War, Mars can also activate the aggressive side of our natures and encourage strife and conflict (Mars) for the sake of our beliefs (Jupiter).  This isn’t always a bad thing, but under this influence it can get out of hand if not approached with conscious sensitivity.

This aspect from Mars to Jupiter can be somewhat strident and obnoxious. However, it can also give us the courage that we need to push through a barrier that would otherwise be difficult even though the aspect lasts for only a couple of days. If we approach this time with awareness, this can be a lucky time in which doors open and opportunities are presented to us.  In order to accomplish this, spend some time to pay attention to how your beliefs are affecting your current reality, and where some tweaking might be needed in order to create the kind of balance required by this planetary cycle.  Where do you make yourself smaller and less significant?  Where do you allow your desires to overcome your reason?  How do you balance your beliefs with your other values?

Once Mars makes the shift into Virgo it will calm things down, but also tamp down […]
