Mars Opposite Pluto

The astrology of Tulsi Gabbard

This is the latest in a series of profiles of Democratic presidential candidates.  For the others, see the list at the bottom of this article. In this series I am making every attempt to be objective, but sometimes my bias may seep through.

Tulsi Gabbard is a curious candidate and hard to pin down.  She is economically progressive, supporting Medicare for All, and socially progressive as a fairly recent convert to LGBTQ rights.  She is vegan and a practicing Hindu. She has practiced and taught martial arts and served in the armed services.  She is anti-war, except when it comes to terrorism in which case she is an avowed hawk, blaming Islam for the spread of terrorism around the world which is more of a right-wing position. This has made her a right-wing media darling, praised by Breitbart and Steve Bannon as well as David Duke and Richard Spencer, noted white nationalist leaders. In some ways this is not surprising given her background – there appears to be a natural enmity between Hindus and Muslims which wasn’t helped by the partition of Pakistan. But it does put her to the right of many Democrats in opposition to her more liberal stances on other policies.

It will not surprise astrologers to learn that Ms. Gabbard (born April 12, 1981, time unknown, in American Samoa) was born under the sign of Aries, a sign ruled by Mars and dedicated towards an aggressive assertion of the Self.  Aries individuals tend to be courageous and idealistic, but usually not afraid to back down in a fight.  On top of this, her Sun conjoins Mars, the planetary ruler of Aries, which is also in Aries where it is strongest and most easily able to […]

Planetary news this week! Full moon, Neptune retrograde, Mars reactions, and the Solstice

This week is so full of planetary action I hardly know where to begin!  If you missed my post on the Full Moon of June 17th you can catch it here.  The amplification of the Full Moon intensifies some of the other drama going on right now with Mars and Mercury so let’s talk about that a bit here.

Mars and Mercury

Last week I wrote: “Mars is quite active between the 13th and the 23th, which will help us to shake off some of the inertia of Jupiter/Neptune but could also create some problems.  Mars is the action planet, and it is currently opposing Saturn (limitations and restriction) and will soon also oppose Pluto (destruction, new beginnings).  The combination of Mars attempting to push its way through blockages, sometimes in a reckless manner, with the confusion of Jupiter/Neptune could create some chaos.  All of these planets are between 16 and 22 degrees, so if you have planets in your chart at those degrees you will be particularly affected.”  All of this is still true, and Mercury is involved now as well.

Mercury represents the mind and the way we think, communicate, and process information.  Mercury is in Cancer now where it encourages emotional thinking – this can be helpful when dealing with emotional issues, but less helpful when a more rational mind is required.  Mercury aligns with aggressive Mars on the 18th, stirring up arguments and creating a generally disagreeable environment.  It’s tempting to want to avoid the emotionality of what may arise, but there are clues to healing and progress in those emotions.  Ideally we want to pay attention to the reactions that bleed through our normal interactions without getting swept away […]

The 2019 Sagittarius Full Moon and the Galactic Center

The Galactic Center, currently at 27 degrees Sagittarius, is the rotational center of our galaxy – like the Sun, which is the center of our solar system and the major astrological factor of personal significance, the Galactic Center is the force that binds the galaxy together.  Astrologically and symbolically, the Galactic Center is the heart of the Universe – the soul of wisdom for our solar system and our species of humanity as well as all of the other planetary systems and species that may exist in the farther reaches of the Milky Way.

This week’s Full Moon is at the Galactic Center, suggesting potential for a portal of awareness and insight at this time.  Sagittarius is the sign of exploration and adventure, but also the sign that seeks meaning and truth.  Under this Full Moon, we can expand our awareness and the limitation of our own ideas and achieve greater understanding that can help us in very practical ways.

This Full Moon experience is irritated by a complex planetary system involving Mars, the planet of drive, motivation and war.  Mars is in emotional Cancer right now and the rumblings of anger and frustration may be more difficult to access.  But Mars aligns with Mercury (the mind and communication) at this Full Moon, heightening the intensity of our conversations and making arguments and disputes more likely.  This is exacerbated by a stressful opposition from Mars and Mercury to both Saturn and Pluto.  Saturn represses and attempts to block these energies, and Pluto blows them up in order to transform them into more productive pathways of personal evolution.

When the planetary energies are this intense, there is no point in trying to avoid them.  Instead, we can pay attention to […]

Full Moon in Aquarius, August 13 2011

Art from Wildsunflower Studio

The Full Moon this month will take place August 13th at 2:58 pm EDT/6:58 pm GMT.

The Full Moon is the culmination of the lunar cycle and the beginning of the waning phase of letting go. In Aquarius, the Full Moon seeks to achieve a pinnacle of social justice and fairness – an observation of the world in which ego, the realm of Leo, is no longer a part of the equation. However, since the Full Moon is an opposition between the Sun and the Moon, and any opposition requires balance and integration, it becomes more important to balance the Leo quality of a healthy sense of Self with the Aquarian quality of transpersonalization.

The love and beauty of Venus is tightly aligned in this Full Moon since she nearly exactly conjoins the Sun and showers her blessings on the event. However, that pesky alignment between Mars and the Uranus/Pluto square suggest that challenges lurk beneath the surface and must be attended to, rather like a party that takes place at the mouth of a dragon’s cave. The conjunction between the Sun to Venus tightens over the next few days and the two remain within a few degrees of each other through the last week of August. The Sun represents the development of the individual Self, and just as the light of the Sun can overpower the radiance of Venus in the sky, the focus on Self in a Sun/Venus conjunction can obscure the yearning of Venus for harmony and connection with others. The fact that Venus is in Leo (the sign associated with the Sun) at this time enhances the focus on Self and encourages the heart to open in new and more […]

Mars and the London Riots

Disaffected young people have been rioting in England since the shooting on August 4th of a young suspect (Mark Duggan, age 29 and in his Saturn Return) during an arrest for gun crime in Tottenham in North London.  The riots began as a peaceful protest in Tottenham and escalated to full spread rioting and vandalism, spreading to other areas of London as well as Liverpool, Manchester and other working class cities in England.

Mars entered Cancer on August 4th.  In the emotionally sensitive sign of Cancer, Mars can be very touchy and reactive and as soon as Mars entered Cancer it began to form challenging aspects to Uranus (radical and rebellious activity) and Pluto (death and transformation of the power centers).  As you know if you’ve been reading this blog, we are just entering a four-year period in which Uranus and Pluto will be challenging each other in the sky, during which rebellion (Uranus) against the power structures (Pluto) is somewhat inevitable.

This is the opening square of a cycle of these two planets that began in the 1960s when Uranus and Pluto conjoined in Virgo.  At the time there was a tremendous rebellion against the conservative values (Virgo) of the 1950s and a great deal of pressure to create a new culture of freedom (Uranus).  In order to create something completely new, often something old must be destroyed.

The square (90 degree) aspect creates a crisis that must be resolved, so with Uranus in Aries in a square to Pluto in Capricorn any areas of the world in which liberty (Uranus) for the individual (Aries) is being subjugated by the power elite (Pluto) and the structures that embody that power (Capricorn), the planetary atmosphere is such that conflict is sure […]
