Astrological news this week: Watery realms under the Cancer New Moon and Neptune station

Astrological update for the week of June 27-July 4, 2022

Elemental Water

Neptune stations retrograde.  The role of Neptune is to inspire the transcendence of ordinary life and ascension into a more illuminated experience of creative inspiration. Under its influence Spirit blossoms into the material world. Neptune is associated with experiences that bring spiritual bliss, but idealism and imagination can also bring confusion and self-deception if we’re not aware. Neptune’s role in the astrological pantheon, in my opinion, is to encourage us to seek out experiences which teach us that we are spiritual beings in a human experience.

This week Neptune turns retrograde. Like all of the outer planets, Neptune appears to travel retrograde for about half the year so this in itself is not a big story unless you yourself are under its influence right now. However, Neptune is associated with the spread of viruses and disease, and the past three Neptune stations (change of direction) have coincided with a new variant that took the Covid-19 virus in a new direction. Alpha & Beta both erupted a week after a Neptune station (SD) November 28, 2020. Delta was named one week after the Neptune station (SR) on June 25, 2021. And Omicron emerged a week before the Neptune station (SD) on December 1, 2021.

I’ve been watching the news to see if that pattern will continue, and so far it is only the Omicron variant that itself is mutating into lots of different subvariants. That could suggest that the Covid-19 virus itself is weakening, which would be very good news. Hopefully that will continue.

In any event, Neptune is a slow moving planet, and when it makes a “station” before changing direction it can remain at […]

The astrology of Alec Baldwin’s shooting accident

The shocking shooting accident on the set of the film “Rust” last week coincided with a difficult week astrologically.  The Moon was just full in Aries, in a challenging alignment with both Mars, planet of violence and aggression, and Pluto, planet of death and rebirth. Any Mars/Pluto combination is fraught with potential for violence, and while I would never say that this alignment caused the accident, its coincidental timing must be noted.

As if that weren’t enough, the new planet Eris was opposed by Mars and squared by Pluto at the Full Moon. You can read more about that here, but with Eris representing discord and small events that unravel into major upheaval, such as the story of the goddess Eris whose rage at not being invited to a wedding led to the Trojan War, we can see how this is no small thing.

Mr. Baldwin was born with the Sun in Aries, and it opposes his Libra Moon.  We don’t have a time of birth which would give us the exact position of the Moon, but we do know that it is in an opposition to the Sun: a Full Moon.  In addition, the Sun and Moon were within fifteen degrees of the lunar nodes, a condition which creates an eclipse (in this case, it was a penumbral lunar eclipse).  Full Moon personalities tend to be larger than life, and when the Full Moon was also a lunar eclipse, those personalities tend to catalyze a fair amount of drama. (Another familiar personality born under an eclipse is Donald J. Trump.)

Mr. Baldwin also has an opposition from Mars to Uranus, the planet of radical action and liberation, which is not […]

Astrological update for the week of October 25-November 1, 2021

Sorry for the tardiness of this post!  I was traveling yesterday for nearly 24 hours and overestimated my ability to post from airports using my ipad.

I took this photo in the Doge’s Palace in Venice.  This is not a clock but rather a marking of the Sun through the zodiac. It fascinates me that the highly religious Catholics of the time made such a prominent point of the astrological symbolism! (The needle seems to be stuck at Pisces since every photo of this clock has the needle in the same place.)

The astrology last week was pretty intense, what with the Aries Full Moon opposing Mars, squaring Pluto and conjunct Eris.  I hope you survived it and were able to harness all of that power and use it for good. 😊

This week we have a bit of a break, with mostly lunar aspects.  Retrograde season is over and the world is rushing ahead at breakneck speed in an effort to catch up from the tidal reversal over the past couple of months.  Currently only Uranus, Neptune and Chiron are retrograde which is a relatively small number of retrograde planets.

The biggest news of the week is Mars entering Scorpio on October 30th.  This is kind of symbolic because that is the day before Halloween, All Hallows Eve, which is the quintessence of Scorpio season. Conquering our fear of death. Transcending boundaries of alternate realities. Embracing darkness.  While Mars is in Scorpio it will translate the ever tightening final square between Saturn and Uranus and likely inflame the conflict over control for the sake of public health (Saturn) versus the freedom and personal liberty of making one’s own choices (Uranus).  This Mars-y influence will peak the […]

The power of Will at the Aries Full Moon

art by Christy Tortland

In lieu of the weekly forecast this week since I’m out of the country, this post on the Full Moon energies pretty much contains all of the energies for the week!

The Aries Full Moon occurs on October 20th, and it’s a potent one.  First of all, it’s in Aries so Mars is the planetary ruler and there is a fiery potency to all things at this time.  Mars, ruler of this Full Moon, is very closely conjunct the Libra Sun and approaching a challenging square to Pluto which will culminate on October 22nd and this challenging aspect is locked into the Full Moon chart.

Many of you know that I am kind of an ambassador for Mars.  Traditionally Mars is considered to be malefic, and even when well placed his attributes are not that attractive: contentious and a lover of warfare are not what you would call the most honorable traits in a planet. And his bad traits are worse: murder, thievery, promoter of sedition, perjurer, etc. etc.  But Mars is the planet of Will – the prime desire that inspires and motivates us to go after what we want, to defend ourselves and others, and fuels us with physical energy and desire.

Still, when there is an overabundance of Mars energy it can be difficult, especially when there is a challenging square to Pluto involved as there is here.  Mars is in Libra where it can be polite and tactful but not really promote the Martian attributes that are so important for human psychological and physical health.  Power conflicts may arise, and if there is anger in the subconscious it may emerge here […]
