Mercury in Capricorn

Astrological update for the week of December 13-20, 2021: So much going on!

There’s way too much going on this week for a snappy heading! So I’m just going to dive right in.

Venus/Pluto conjunction.  Venus and Pluto conjoined last week and Venus is virtually stationary as she prepares to turn retrograde on Sunday December 19th, so this aspect will continue really until the end of December. when Venus begins to retrograde away from Pluto.  This is a potent combination which has the potential to create deep transformation in our self-esteem as well as our interpersonal connections. Venus is in Capricorn where we tend to have a more practical and pragmatic approach to these matters, making it easier to do the work that Pluto requires in order to effect positive transformation.

Speaking of Venus, Venus turns retrograde December 19. The retrograde cycle of Venus lasts for 40 days (see more on this interesting subject) and like all retrograde cycles offers an opportunity to take a step back and re-assess our values, relationships, priorities, attachments, and principles.  Under Venus retrograde, relationships can be repaired and re-discovered, and while it’s true that these are not the best times to begin new relationships of any kind. a relationship begun under a retrograde Venus can help us to learn more about ourselves.

Mars and Mercury change signs. When planets shift from one sign to the next, there is a change of focus in the matters associated with that sign. Mars has been in Scorpio, one of its rulership signs where it is at its most potent, and the intensity of aggressive force and competition has been palpable.  On Monday the 13th, Mars has just moved into Sagittarius.  This is a big move – from the intensity of Scorpio into the happy optimism of Sagittarius – and […]

Thoughts on the upcoming Mercury retrograde

Mercury retrogradeThis Mercury retrograde period may be more challenging than some, especially during the first week (beginning around now until the 18th of December when Mercury retrogrades back into Sagittarius.

Mercury is in Capricorn now, where it wants to organize things and achieve something important.  Capricorn is all about goals and success, and it is not well-suited to the retrograde periods of Mercury which require reflection and a more inward focus that stimulates the subtle mind rather than the mental realm.

Mercury turns retrograde at about 5 degrees Capricorn, tightly conjunct Pluto.  Mercury has been conjunct Pluto since the New Moon a few days ago, and this influence remains as long as Mercury remains in Capricorn.  The combination of Mercury to Pluto brings intensity and passion to any ideas or thoughts that come to mind, and generally forces (because after all, it’s Pluto) us to face something secret and dark that we have been hiding from, if any such thing is lurking about anywhere.

Mars will be entering Capricorn shortly after this post is published, and it will then move into alignment with both Mercury and Pluto.  Mars rules aggression, rage and warfare, along with the simple energy that motivates and inspires us.  But when Mars aligns with Pluto and begins to radiate Pluto’s intensity, our desires become more urgent and power conflicts can result.

The North Node is also tied into this drama, pulling us relentlessly towards personal evolution and ensuring that we won’t fall backwards into the abyss if we fail to take the right steps.

This is a powerful combination of planets, and even though Mercury and Mars are usually fast movers, Mercury is moving slowly now as it prepares to change direction, and then after the retrograde […]

Mercury Enters Capricorn Today

Mercury has been traveling through the upbeat sign of Sagittarius for a month or so, and now moves into the serious sign of Capricorn. Mercury rules the mental functions, communication, small machinery and telephones, and generally the way we process information. When Mercury is in Capricorn, the sign of goals, accomplishment and leadership, information processing happens to serve a purpose. Capricorn is the sign that says “the ends justify the means,” and the means is often to preserve the established social order which is also signified by Capricorn.

Over the next few weeks while Mercury is in Capricorn we are likely to see even more rationales for government malfunctions that claim to be “for the good of the country.” On the positive side, Mercury in Capricorn can be good for the financial markets as there is an added note of practicality to business decisions that promote sound “bottom line” thinking.
