Astrological news this week: Autumn equinox brings a turning point, and a New Moon

Astrological update for the week of September 19-26, 2022

art by Hayley Roberts

September is one of those months when the Sun moves into a cardinal sign and marks the beginning of a new season. Here in the northern hemisphere we are moving into fall, and my friends Down Under are transitioning to Spring. Either way, there is a whiff of change in the air.

Fall Equinox September 22, 9:03 pm. This month the Equinox marks the point of equality between darkness and light as we move from the mutability of Virgo into the cardinal point of Libra. Each of the cardinal signs marks a solstice or equinox, the turning points in the wheel of the year and the budding of promise as we enter a new season. In the Aries season at the March equinox we are more focused on initiating something new and adventurous, but here in Libra season in September we begin to integrate into our surroundings and learn to find greater balance and harmony. In the spring we plant the harvest, and in the fall we share it.

The astrological chart for the Equinoxes and Solstices are sometimes used to predict the energies of the coming season, and this Equinox chart is an interesting one. The Equinox Sun exactly conjoins Mercury, suggesting that there will be some fast moving events to shift us into the next phase. Jupiter is involved in this dynamic too, expanding the possibilities and opening doorways to new experiences.

The Equinox chart for Washington D.C. has Pluto tightly conjunct the Midheaven, the place of government and rulership, which does not seem ideal for a pre-election season in a nation that is torn by political strife. But that is nothing […]

Astrological update for the week of August 1-8, 2022

art may be by Reina Cottier

Mars/Uranus/North Node.  This week will begin with the climactic conjunction of Mars to Uranus and the North Node, an event which was building last week and peaks on Monday. Mars is fiery action and Uranus is the rebellious departure from the norm, so together they make quite a team. Meanwhile the North Node calls to us from the future, asking that we make the correct choices to lead us down the road to where our destiny awaits.  We may feel somewhat scattered and anxious, especially on Monday but also as the week winds down along with the planetary energies, but within that anxiety there are clues to the path towards a more enlightened future.

Mercury enters Virgo August 4. Mercury is quite happy in Virgo, one of its rulership signs, where it can put its analytic skills to work. Over the next few weeks our problem-solving skills will get a nice boost and if there’s any area of your life that needs more organization, this is the time to get out the spreadsheets and notebooks.

Venus is active, harmonizing with Mars, Uranus and Neptune throughout the week. Harmonious Venus aspects help to bring greater personal equanimity and peaceful relations with others so this is a good thing.

Mars square Saturn. The challenging square from Saturn (rules and order) to Uranus (rebellion and revolution) which was the hallmark of 2021 is mostly finished, but this aspect will tighten through the rest of the summer and early fall. Even though the aspect won’t again be exact, it will be close enough to be felt and transits of Mars and Mercury will […]

The meaning of Mercury in Virgo, August 11-August 30, 2021

artist unknown

Mercury is the fastest moving of the planets, and as the messenger god in Roman mythology he was the only one of all of the gods that was allowed into the Underworld, the domain of Pluto.  This is a lovely symbol for the way in which our mental understanding (Mercury) helps to facilitate our personal transformation through our experiences and provides us with a way to process the events in our life in a way that enhances our personal growth.  As Mercury travels through the signs it sheds new light on ways in which we can process events and feelings – all of the data that we encounter each day is converted through the mind into nutrition for the soul, just as the food we eat is converted into nutrition for the body.  And just like the food we eat, this nutrition can be either delicious and useful or seem to taste good and then make us feel bad.

Mercury leaves enthusiastic Leo today for more serious Virgo – one of the signs which it rules.  Mercury is at home in Virgo where this data processing of our experiences can be done efficiently and with purpose.  The element of air is concerned with matters of communication so Mercury is technically an air planet, but it is quite at home in this earth sign where a practical application of our ideas can be put to good use as we sort through puzzle of ideas and mental data which flow through the mind constantly, and assemble it into a cohesive picture in the pursuit of perfection.

We can use this time while Mercury is in Virgo to get organized and to learn or study as it may be easier […]

New Moon in Leo, July 30 2011

Sun Gaian Tarot from the Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert

The New Moon marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle – the time when the Sun and the Moon are aligned at the exact degree.  It would be more accurately called the “Dark Moon,” since this alignment occurs before the Moon shows the first glimpse of herself in the early crescent phase, but in any case the New Moon marks the letting go of one area of life and the beginning of a new cycle.

As we move into the realm of Leo, we become more naturally oriented towards an awareness of our true Self and how we want it to be expressed in the outer world.  Leo is the sign of nobility, and it represents the Noble Self as well as the Divine Child.  Under the influence of Leo, we seek to become the best specimen of humanity that we can possibly be.

This Leo Moon is conjoined by Venus, which makes it the perfect time to begin new alliances in which we honor the Divine Child both in ourselves and in our friends, lovers, or business colleagues.  The kingly planet Jupiter forms a strong aspect, a square, to the lunation (lunar event), offering an expansive means to stretch beyond any limitations that keep us from exploring our pure potential.  Because this Jupiter/Moon aspect is a square, there is some danger here that we might take this natural abundance of positive ego to an extreme and cross that delicate line between a healthy ego and self-centered egotism.

Mercury in the New Moon chart is in humble Virgo which will likely apply the brakes if the ego becomes too expansive.  In Virgo the mind becomes focused on the […]

A challenging planetary week ahead

Mercury is the planet that rules over communication, the transmission of information and the operation of small machinery, and for the next week or so it will be under stress, potentially causing disruptions in the way we communicate with others and the smooth operation of business.

Mercury is in its own sign of Virgo where it is usually practical and logical, good with details and effective in creating order out of the routine of day-to-day life. It is approaching a conjunction to Saturn which will encourage us to take a more serious approach to the everyday workings of our life. This is a time to knuckle down and honor responsibilities rather than seek the freedom of our individualit
