Planetary news this week: Capricorn SuperMoon and a lot of Mercury

Astrological update for the week of July 11-18, 2022

As many of you know, a Full Moon becomes a SuperMoon (™ astrologer Richard Nolle) when the Moon is closest to Earth than at other times. Full Moons are known to affect ocean tides and sea creatures (including humans who are made up of 60% water), and water is the element of feeling and emotion. Under the influence of the Moon emotions are heightened and the realm of feelings dominates the landscape.

Capricorn Full Moon. When the Full Moon SuperMoon is in the earthy sign of Capricorn, there is a need to balance the moodiness of the Cancerian Sun, with all its watery splendor, against the Capricornian need to do the responsible things that will provide and enhance the structures of our lives. Under this Full Moon we need to strike that balance between the emotions and feelings that drive us and enrich our world and the hard reality of life in a material world of accomplishment and production.

This week the Full Moon occurs on Wednesday the 13th at 2:38 pm EDT and the Full Moon chart is full of potent energies. The Moon trines the North Node of the future and the Sun trines the South Node of the past, suggesting an easy release of something which has held us back in order to release us towards a better future. But before that release can occur, the square of Chiron to the lunation may force a soul or psychological wound to break and release its infection so that healing can occur. Fortunately, harmonious Uranus aspects assist in this process by facilitating an eagerness and excitement for the new Capricornian structures to […]

7.20.21 – Shaking out the cobwebs with Mercury in Cancer sextile Uranus

art by Catherine McElroy

Mercury, planet of the mind, is in Cancer right now where our thinking tends to be more emotional and sensitive.  Cancer is an acquisitive sign – it likes to gather and collect things of sentimental value, including thoughts and assumptions about the people around us.  The unlayering process of yesterday’s post with Mercury in a square aspect to Chiron continues today, but where Chiron exposes the sensitive wounds that have been dormant for some time as part of the healing process, Uranus breaks up the energy that’s become stuck and helps us to move through any blocks.

Meanwhile the Moon is in Sagittarius, encouraging freedom of thought and adventure in ideas, and it conjoins the South Node this morning (EDT) to help to liberate us from old patterns which hold us back.  Some planetary alignments of liberation can be frightening, but this one is a gentle unloosening of any bonds which have kept us locked into thought patterns which don’t serve us.  A harmonious sextile from the Moon to practical Saturn in late morning (EDT) helps to stabilize any lingering chaos, and a trine from the Moon to Chiron in the afternoon (EDT) will complete the process of healing the old wounds which have emerged over the past couple of days. ❤️

7.19.21 – Unlayering with Mercury square Chiron

artist unknown

We spend much of our lives adding layers to our thoughts, our ideas, our emotions.  Like our closets, we keep adding layers but rarely remove any which is why organization porn is so popular on Instagram.  When we do this emotionally, the clutter can build up to the point where we have no idea what we feel or how we got there.  With our layers of busyness and plans we’ve covered up the original emotional wounds, just like a scab over a wound to the body, but the scab has to fall off sometime so that the wound can heal.

Today and tomorrow a strong square aspect between Mercury (thoughts and communication) to Chiron (wounding and healing) can help us to remove some of the layers that keep us from being able to feel really comfortable in our own skins. The layers of others’ expectations and fears of abandonment.  The layers of insecurity and self-doubt.  The catch is that the only way to peel off those layers is to feel and experience them, and that’s the journey happening right now.  The intense Scorpio Moon can assist in this process, and the Moon is quite active today as it interacts with seven planetary bodies (Neptune, Mars, Pluto, Venus, Sun and Jupiter), digging into the truths of so many layers!  A good day to breathe and let go of the detritus that clutters up the psyche, and maybe the closet too. 😃

The meaning of Mercury in Cancer: May 28-August 4, 2020

art by Ellen Uytewaal

Mercury, the planet of messages and information, is typically in a sign for less than a month, but because of the upcoming retrograde it will remain in Cancer until August 4th.  Any retrograde Mercury period is important since a retrograde planet applies greater emphasis and tends to dominate the astrological influences. This year, however, when Mercury turns retrograde on June 18th it will  just one of five planets in retrograde (followed by Neptune a few days later for a total of six).  You may want to catch up on this article about the summer of retrogrades.

But back to Mercury in Cancer.  Cancer is ruled by the Moon, the luminary that governs our emotions and our secret inner selves.  To understand Cancer you need go no farther than the Crab which is one of Cancer’s symbols.  With a soft tender shell in their youth, the Crab is very vulnerable and tender, caring deeply for others and for the world as a whole.  However if the Crab is hurt or wounded it may develop a hard shell in later years making it difficult to express those tender feelings.

Mercury is typically objective and seeks a certain amount of order in our thinking and transmission of information, but in Cancer the need for an open mind can be subsumed by feelings and sensation.  Cancer thrives on a sense of being at home, both physically and with our families or our tribe – the people with whom we feel more at home.  Much is being written these days about our “quarantine tribe” – the people that we are closest to and choose to spend time with even while in quarantine […]

Aquarius New Moon, February 10, 2013

Aquarius New Moonart by Kagaya.  The Moon is New in Aquarius today, offering up an opportunity to surrender all of the trappings of personality that culminated at the Leo Full Moon two weeks ago and opening up to a more universal perspective.

At the New Moon the energies of the Sun and Moon are fused, linking the solar conscious ego to the instinctive lunar heart of the soul. Conscious and unconscious, exterior and interior – there is a fusion here that provides us with an opportunity for a new beginning in the sign in which the lunation falls.

This New Moon is particularly powerful because of an exact square between the Sun and Moon to the North Node which makes this a bit like an eclipse. The lunar nodes are like signposts to destiny – they suggest events that are fated and point the direction in which our soul needs to travel. When a lunation is in a tight alignment to the nodes it signifies a pivotal point in our life so attention should be paid to any signals that are received at this time.

Aquarius is the inventor, the humanitarian and the scientist.  There is a cold idealism to Aquarius which enables us to look past our individual desires and needs to see the brilliant potential of a broader view. This is not a time when feelings and emotions will be honored – instead the higher mind takes the forefront of human experience.

A challenging square from Mars to Jupiter culminates at the New Moon, activating both planets to greater expression. imaginative force of Mars in Pisces.

The Aquarius New Moon is all about awakening to new realities – letting go of outmoded ideas and philosophies […]
