Planetary news this week: Entering the brave new world

Astrological update for the week of January 23-30, 2023

The Uranus factor. The influence of Uranus continues its dominance, having just turned direct and remaining stationary until mid-March. Stationary planets exert a powerful impact as their energies are laser focused for a longer period of time. We just had the Uranus-ruled Aquarius New Moon which was a SuperMoon, at its closest point to Earth (perigee).  The co-ruler of Aquarius, Saturn, is itself in Aquarius where it shares the stage with the modern ruler Uranus.

Uranus is the innovator and paradigm buster; under its influence we are inspired or forced to break out of a situation or way of thinking which no longer works. As we continue the march into the changes of the decade, the world we knew will continue to fall away. This offers an opportunity for creative innovation in the rebuilding of the world, and of our own personal lives as well.

Let’s take a look at what else is in store for us this week. (Dates and times are for the Eastern time zone, here is a time zone converter to adjust for your locality.)

Monday January 23. As the week begins we are still unwinding from the Aquarius New Moon, with the Moon still in Aquarius for the first part of the day. All of that sparkly electrical charge begins to settle down just after midnight on Monday, and then when the Moon enters Pisces at 12:35 pm EST it becomes easier to find a harmonic flow through which to direct our thoughts and actions. (Moon conjunct Saturn 4:24 am, Moon conjunct Venus 5:19 am, Moon enters Pisces 12:35 pm.)

Tuesday January 24. Today is […]

Planetary news this week: Mars turns direct and the Moon sings

Astrological update for the week of January 9-16, 2023

art by Kristin Ashley

This week we are in the waning phase of the Moon, just after the fullness of last week’s Full Moon and heading towards the second of three Super New Moons in a row. This is an interesting time of letting go as the Moon wanes, but also building anticipation as we move into a Super New Moon, a time when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth.

Throughout the month of January there are no major planetary alignments, so the smaller planets have a bigger story and will have a say in what is released this week as the Moon continues to wane, and in what is created at the New Moon on the 21st.

Mars turns direct. Mars, planet of action and desire, has been particularly troublesome while retrograde in Mercury-ruled Gemini and the double whammy with Mercury retrograde has wreaked havoc on communication (the botched election for the U.S. House Speaker is a good example!).  Mars is stationary as it prepares to change direction, and Mercury will turn direct on the 18th so they are both prominent in the sky in anticipation of the direction change.

Let’s take a look at what else is in store for us this week. (Dates and times are for the Eastern time zone, here is a time zone converter to adjust for your locality.)

Monday January 9. As the week begins, the Moon is still in the sunny sign of Leo where we are motivated to look for bits of sunlight in the midst of any darkness or drama that we find ourselves in. A Mercury/Uranus aspect lingers from Sunday to help us […]

Planetary news this week: Capricorn SuperMoon and a lot of Mercury

Astrological update for the week of July 11-18, 2022

Art source

As many of you know, a Full Moon becomes a SuperMoon (™ astrologer Richard Nolle) when the Moon is closest to Earth than at other times. Full Moons are known to affect ocean tides and sea creatures (including humans who are made up of 60% water), and water is the element of feeling and emotion. Under the influence of the Moon emotions are heightened and the realm of feelings dominates the landscape.

Capricorn Full Moon. When the Full Moon SuperMoon is in the earthy sign of Capricorn, there is a need to balance the moodiness of the Cancerian Sun, with all its watery splendor, against the Capricornian need to do the responsible things that will provide and enhance the structures of our lives. Under this Full Moon we need to strike that balance between the emotions and feelings that drive us and enrich our world and the hard reality of life in a material world of accomplishment and production.

This week the Full Moon occurs on Wednesday the 13th at 2:38 pm EDT and the Full Moon chart is full of potent energies. The Moon trines the North Node of the future and the Sun trines the South Node of the past, suggesting an easy release of something which has held us back in order to release us towards a better future. But before that release can occur, the square of Chiron to the lunation may force a soul or psychological wound to break and release its infection so that healing can occur. Fortunately, harmonious Uranus aspects assist in this process by facilitating an eagerness and excitement for the new Capricornian structures to […]

7.20.21 – Shaking out the cobwebs with Mercury in Cancer sextile Uranus

art by Catherine McElroy

Mercury, planet of the mind, is in Cancer right now where our thinking tends to be more emotional and sensitive.  Cancer is an acquisitive sign – it likes to gather and collect things of sentimental value, including thoughts and assumptions about the people around us.  The unlayering process of yesterday’s post with Mercury in a square aspect to Chiron continues today, but where Chiron exposes the sensitive wounds that have been dormant for some time as part of the healing process, Uranus breaks up the energy that’s become stuck and helps us to move through any blocks.

Meanwhile the Moon is in Sagittarius, encouraging freedom of thought and adventure in ideas, and it conjoins the South Node this morning (EDT) to help to liberate us from old patterns which hold us back.  Some planetary alignments of liberation can be frightening, but this one is a gentle unloosening of any bonds which have kept us locked into thought patterns which don’t serve us.  A harmonious sextile from the Moon to practical Saturn in late morning (EDT) helps to stabilize any lingering chaos, and a trine from the Moon to Chiron in the afternoon (EDT) will complete the process of healing the old wounds which have emerged over the past couple of days. ❤️

7.19.21 – Unlayering with Mercury square Chiron

artist unknown

We spend much of our lives adding layers to our thoughts, our ideas, our emotions.  Like our closets, we keep adding layers but rarely remove any which is why organization porn is so popular on Instagram.  When we do this emotionally, the clutter can build up to the point where we have no idea what we feel or how we got there.  With our layers of busyness and plans we’ve covered up the original emotional wounds, just like a scab over a wound to the body, but the scab has to fall off sometime so that the wound can heal.

Today and tomorrow a strong square aspect between Mercury (thoughts and communication) to Chiron (wounding and healing) can help us to remove some of the layers that keep us from being able to feel really comfortable in our own skins. The layers of others’ expectations and fears of abandonment.  The layers of insecurity and self-doubt.  The catch is that the only way to peel off those layers is to feel and experience them, and that’s the journey happening right now.  The intense Scorpio Moon can assist in this process, and the Moon is quite active today as it interacts with seven planetary bodies (Neptune, Mars, Pluto, Venus, Sun and Jupiter), digging into the truths of so many layers!  A good day to breathe and let go of the detritus that clutters up the psyche, and maybe the closet too. 😃
