Pluto conjunct North Node

The Astrology of Rachel Dolezal

Rachel Dolezal astrologyRachel Dolezal, a woman who was just outed by her own parents for posing as a black person for years but is actually white, is the type of case that send me right to the astrological chart to try to find an explanation of such bizarre behavior.

Unfortunately without a birth time we can’t identify the ascendant, the sign on the horizon at the time she was born, which would provide more details about her relationship to her personal identity which is what this case is all about.  The rest of the chart is interesting  – three planets in Scorpio and three planets in Sagittarius show a basic duality in the personality between two signs that have nothing in common with each other and don’t understand each other.  Scorpio is intense and dramatic and concerned with matters of power – Sagittarius rebels from all that and wants to get unstuck and find freedom to explore new ideas.

Dolezal’s Scorpio Sun conjoins Uranus, the planet of radical behavior so it wouldn’t be unusual for her to be rebellious and want to find her own way.  Her Mars – showing her desires and drive – is in the sign of Leo which needs a sense of importance and validation and often seeks fame and attention when the inner validation is not found.  Uranus forms a challenging square to Mars, aggravating the rebellious streak and instilling a desire to be different and unique.

With her Venus in Scorpio she is passionate about everything she becomes involved in, but Chiron, the planet of wounding and healing, opposes her Venus and suggests insecurities and a fundamental lack of self-worth.   In addition, Saturn, the planet of self-doubt and restriction forms a square to her Sun, […]

Thoughts on the upcoming Mercury retrograde

Mercury retrogradeThis Mercury retrograde period may be more challenging than some, especially during the first week (beginning around now until the 18th of December when Mercury retrogrades back into Sagittarius.

Mercury is in Capricorn now, where it wants to organize things and achieve something important.  Capricorn is all about goals and success, and it is not well-suited to the retrograde periods of Mercury which require reflection and a more inward focus that stimulates the subtle mind rather than the mental realm.

Mercury turns retrograde at about 5 degrees Capricorn, tightly conjunct Pluto.  Mercury has been conjunct Pluto since the New Moon a few days ago, and this influence remains as long as Mercury remains in Capricorn.  The combination of Mercury to Pluto brings intensity and passion to any ideas or thoughts that come to mind, and generally forces (because after all, it’s Pluto) us to face something secret and dark that we have been hiding from, if any such thing is lurking about anywhere.

Mars will be entering Capricorn shortly after this post is published, and it will then move into alignment with both Mercury and Pluto.  Mars rules aggression, rage and warfare, along with the simple energy that motivates and inspires us.  But when Mars aligns with Pluto and begins to radiate Pluto’s intensity, our desires become more urgent and power conflicts can result.

The North Node is also tied into this drama, pulling us relentlessly towards personal evolution and ensuring that we won’t fall backwards into the abyss if we fail to take the right steps.

This is a powerful combination of planets, and even though Mercury and Mars are usually fast movers, Mercury is moving slowly now as it prepares to change direction, and then after the retrograde […]

The North Node/Pluto conjunction November 2010

The North and South Nodes of the  Moon are important parts of the astrological chart, but they are not planets.  Rather, they are points in the sky that mark the passage of the Moon across the path of the Sun.  I like to think of them as signposts in the sky that point us in the right direction so that we can accomplish our evolutionary journey.  The South Node is associated with the past – things and emotions which give us comfort but also hold us back.  The North Node is associated with our destiny and helps us to align with our future self.  On November 27th Pluto conjoined the North Node for the first time since 1994

Geeky astrological detail – some astrologers use the “True Node,” the exact position of the Nodes, and some use the “Mean Node,” the average position of the Nodes which tend to vacillate forward and reverse rather erratically.  In my work I have found the Mean Node to be more accurate but as in anything else, astrologers will differ which is why you may find differing dates for this conjunction.

Transits involving the nodes of the Moon do not usually set off major events the way planetary transits do, but they do tend to signify a change in course that alters the path of our journey.

The last few times Pluto conjoined the North Node occurred in 1961 (in Virgo), in 1977 (in Libra), and in 1994 (in Scorpio).  1961 marked the beginning of the turbulent 1960s (which were helped along by the conjunction of Uranus and Pluto from 1962-1968).  The years after the 1977 conjunction saw the fall of Iran and the rise of religious dogmatism around the world which necessitated […]
