Millenials: The loneliest generation

A new article by Vox News reports that 30% of the age group commonly referred to as Millenials (described in this article as age 22-38, corresponding exactly to the period when Pluto was in Scorpio, is lonely.

22 percent of millennials in the poll said they had zero friends. Twenty-seven percent said they had “no close friends,” 30 percent said they have “no best friends,” and 25 percent said they have no acquaintances.

This 30% loneliness figure compares with 15% of the Baby Boomers born under Pluto in Leo, and 20% of those born under Pluto in Virgo.

Pluto spends between 12 and 20 years in each sign, and the generations born under these signs share certain qualities, although they are not the same. The Baby Boomer generation, born under Pluto in Leo, generally share some Leo qualities of creative self expression and a relentless desire for joy. Generation X, born under Pluto in Virgo, share some Virgoan qualities of service and self-effacement. The Millenial generation, born when Pluto was in Scorpio between approximately 1981-82 and 1995-96, share Scorpionic qualities of intensity and a deep understanding and familiarity with the notion of the end of life, an understanding where there are no illusions, no false optimism. Every individual is different, but this generation generally won’t surround themselves with large number of friends and will count themselves lucky if they have one or two close friends with which to share their secret fears and personal dramas.

Millennials and astrology – a natural fit

Last year reporter for the Atlantic explored the connection between millennials and astrology:

Many people I spoke to for this piece said they had a sense that the stigma attached to astrology, while it still exists, had receded as the practice has grabbed a foothold in online culture, especially for young people.

“Over the past two years, we’ve really seen a reframing of New Age practices, very much geared toward a Millennial and young Gen X quotient,” says Lucie Greene, the worldwide director of J. Walter Thompson’s innovation group, which tracks and predicts cultural trends.

Callie Beusman, a senior editor at Broadly, says traffic for the site’s horoscopes “has grown really exponentially.” Stella Bugbee, the president and editor-in-chief of The Cut, says a typical horoscope post on the site got 150 percent more traffic in 2017 than the year before.

In some ways, astrology is perfectly suited for the internet age. There’s a low barrier to entry, and nearly endless depths to plumb if you feel like falling down a Google research hole. The availability of more in-depth information online has given this cultural wave of astrology a certain erudition—more jokes about Saturn returns, fewer “Hey baby, what’s your sign?” pickup lines.

Before the Internet, the only form of astrology available to the masses was sun sign “horoscopes” in newspapers, a very watered-down form of astrology that is more poetry and creative writing than actual astrology. A look at Generation Z: The Pluto in Sagittarius generation

Pluto moves through a sign approximately every 20 years – its orbit is elliptical and there is a huge variation in the length of time Pluto spends in any sign – from 12 to 30 years! Each sign that Pluto moves through marks a new generation with a new set of issues and priorities (other posts on generations can be found here).

Sometimes called “Generation Z” and described by social scientists as being born between 1995 and 2009 (Pluto was in Sagittarius between 1995 and 2008 making this a very close fit), this generation is finding it difficult to live in today’s Capricornian world. Sagittarius bestows an open mind and an eagerness to explore other cultures – it often tends to be fascinated with the media, philosophy and religion. Sagittarius is optimistic and needs the freedom to adventure and has a dislike of being controlled. It’s a very social sign and enjoys influencing the opinions of others.

Under the influence of Pluto in Sagittarius the publishing industry as we knew it was destroyed and the internet took over the dissemination of knowledge. Globalism and international communication transformed the realm of commerce. The power of positive thinking and personal growth erupted into the mainstream. But Pluto is the planet of obsession and destruction as well as transformation and regeneration, and Pluto in a sign tends to intensify the attributes of that sign to the extreme.

Here are some things the media has said about “Generation Z” – you’ll easily see how well this fits the Sagittarius archetype:

More sexual abuse allegations under Saturn in Scorpio

Last fall I wrote about the surge of prosecution for sexual violence that began when Saturn entered Scorpio:

Saturn entered Scorpio about a year ago and will take another year and a half or so to travel through that sign. Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars and its modern ruler is Pluto, and these are the two planets that govern sexuality. Mars deals with the physical drives including the sexual drive and energy, and Pluto addresses matters of intimacy and the “petit mort” of sexual surrender. Pluto is also fearless when it comes to the dark side of the human experience, and we often find rape and abusive behaviors under its banner, and Scorpio tends to be an investigator in areas of life where the more carefree signs might fear to venture.

In its role as Celestial Teacher, Saturn brings consequences and lessons in areas of life governed by the sign it travels through, and we have seen many instances in the news over the past year in which governmental bodies (Saturn) are getting tough on sexual violence (Scorpio) in their communities. …

Saturn’s last journey through Scorpio occurred between 1983 and 1985. Pluto had also just entered Scorpio and the AIDS crisis (death/Pluto through sexuality/Scorpio) began. At the same time there was an eruption of child sexual abuse cases and the concept of repressed (Pluto) memories of sexual abuse (Scorpio) brought women out of the closet into the therapist’s office. Those years between 1983 and 1985 while Saturn was in Scorpio brought the phenomenon of childhood sexual abuse into the public eye. In 1983, April was designated National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The Millennial Generation

We’ve been talking in these pages about the generational impacts of this year’s presidential election, including the early boomers (Pluto in Leo), late boomers and generation X (Pluto in Virgo) and generation Y (Pluto in Libra). Each group as a generation carries the impulses of the sign that Pluto was in. But there is another generation, commonly considered to have born since 1982, that many writers are calling the Millennial generation, presumably because they came of age at the turn of the 21st century.

Pluto in Scorpio, the sign which it rules, brought with it the scourge of AIDS (death by sex, both Plutonian/Scorpionic trademarks) along with a flood of repressed memories (Pluto digs out debris from the subconscious) about sexual abuse. Pluto and its sign Scorpio rule over the domain of death, destruction, regeneration and sexuality and the elimination of waste products from our lives that no longer serve us. The Pluto in Scorpio generation, now termed the “Millenials,” are more prone to suicide than any generation before them. They experience the traumatic side of life more deeply – as one Millennial says:

We’re realizing early on that “everything we want” – marriage, family, a good job, comfortable finances – doesn’t come with a warranty. We watched our parents get divorced and laid off, so we’re not exactly starry-eyed about adult commitments, and don’t see many good reasons to stick around.

Plus, while we readily indulge in around-the-world adventures, we’re inundated by images of war, corrupt politics, a sick Earth, and distant family and friends. Frequent travel and jobs abroad are popular among my friends – always on to the newer and wilder thing – but the adventures are often accompanied by loneliness, disconnect, and disappointment, which often worsens upon returning.
