Pluto square Venus

“Does my chart say I will be…” 2018 edition

I have written on this before, but I think it bears repeating.  I often get this question from readers and clients.  “Does my chart say I will ever be able to have a successful relationship?”  “Does my chart say I can overcome my fear of success?”  “Will I ever be financially secure?”  Or occasionally I will hear from someone who wants to know when their business will be successful, or whether someone they are involved with is for certain their soulmate.

The truth is, while the birthchart will identify challenges and blocks that we need to overcome in order to successfully navigate our life path, and while it certainly will show where we have particularly strong talents or skills in certain areas, it does NOT dictate our fate.

My answer to this question usually is, “Do you WANT to have a successful relationship, overcome your fear of success, become financially secure?”  If you have the desire, you can make it happen.  I have had clients whose charts were not well suited to owning a business, and certainly there are people (myself included) whose charts suggest a lot of trouble and trauma in relationships.  But through effort, when our charts are challenged in certain areas we can still fulfill our dreams.  But it does take effort, and it often takes healing old wounds that hold us back which is not an easy process.

For example, some astrologers would say that an individual with Saturn (the lord of Karma) in the seventh house of marriage will never be married.  But I have seen clients with long-lasting happy marriages with that placement.  I myself have Venus in Scorpio square to Pluto, a terrible aspect for relationships.  And it’s true that I had a […]

Gemini New Super Moon May 25th: Sparkly magic and wonder

May Super New Moon Photo by Joseph Brimacomb

The Sun has just entered the brilliant sign of Gemini, and now the Moon aligns with the Sun, fusing the solar consciousness with lunar magic at a time when the Moon is closest to Earth – a Super Moon (™ Richard Nolle) and one of a trio of Super New Moons (April, May and June).

Super Moons can exert a more powerful influence than ordinary lunations – on a personal level we may feel this as a burst of emotional energy and intensity.  Globally, Super Moons are associated with an increase in tidal intensity and seismic forces.  Richard calls the Super New Moons “stealth Super Moons” because we don’t see the huge Super Moon in all its glory.

Gemini season tends to speed up time – a firehose of information, thoughts and ideas can be somewhat overwhelming but also exciting and enlightening. Under the influence of Gemini we are more open to new experiences and recreating ourselves by trying on new personas and ways of thinking.  Here we have not only the Sun and Moon in Gemini, but also Mars, the planet of action and initiation.  There are so many choices now – so many attractive options it can be somewhat dizzying.  But an opposition from Saturn, planet of form and structure, will help to ground and contain us.

This New Moon is opposed by the Black Moon Lilith, suggesting that a deep and ancient voice from our past may emerge and demand to be heard.  In addition, a challenging square from Pluto (intensity and transformation) to Venus (relationships) could create some stress in our interpersonal connections or at the very least, intensify these contacts and facilitate their evolution.

Light and airy energies such as […]

Alexa Ray Joel – A Portrait of Family Depression

alexa ray.jpg

Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, was hospitalized over the weekend after ingesting eight Traumeel pills – a harmless homeopathic remedy.  The New York Post reports that Ms. Joel’s 911 call said that she had wanted to die but changed her mind.  Evidently she was distraught after a breakup with her boyfriend, musician Jimmy Riot that occurred about a year ago.
It is often said that depression runs in families, and some scientists believe that it is a chemical imbalance that runs in families and that this imbalance can be treated with pharmaceuticals.  Certainly we can see tendencies towards depression in the astrological chart, along with the pathways to healing, and somtimes these tendencies do run in families.
Billy Joel, Ms. Joel’s father, famously suffers from depression.  He was hospitalized after a suicide attempt in 1970, and spent a few stints in rehab for drug and alcohol abuse in 2003 and 2005.  Mr. Joel’s astrological chart shows a tight square between Pluto (intensity, fear, power and compulsion) to his Sun, showing a tendency to engage in experiences that will push him to the limits of his endurance and beyond.  He also has a challenging square between Saturn (insecurity and depression) to Venus, which reveals his difficulty with love and marriage, despite the fact that Jupiter (the planet of good fortune) sits in his seventh house of marriage and partnership.  Challenging aspects from Saturn and Pluto to very personal planets like the Sun and Venus often indicate a tendency towards depression and an intensity of experience that goes beyond what others feel.
Alexa Ray Joel’s chart is similarly challenging, with a square from both Mars (anger) and Pluto (compulsion) to […]

Happy Birthday, Jim Morrison!

The death of Jim Morrison was one of the first really sad events of my young life. As a young and lonely wPlut hippie, his music took me to places beyond my reality that really did open the doors of consciousness. I discovered Jim Morrison’s music at the same time I discovered Aldous Huxley and psychedelic pharmaceuticals, which began what was to become a lifelong exploration of the mystery of life. Huxley wrote, “When the doors of perception are cleansed /Things will appear as they are: Infinite.

Jim Morrison said, “There are things known and things unknown, and in between are the doors.”

Jim Morrison had Sun in Sagittarius, the sign of the seeker of truth. Sagittarians typically do not like to delve into the dark recesses of the human unconscious, but Jim’s chart was more complex. Pluto, the god of the underworld that fearlessly enters the jaws of death to uncover the mystery, was exactly square his Moon and opposite his ascendant (rising sign), showing us that the archetype of death and rebirth (Pluto) was integral to his life (ascendant) and expression of his deepest emotions (Moon).

Mars in his chart was in Gemini, which is a very expressive place for the sexual drives of Mars. Mars was conjunct Uranus, the planet of innovation and revolution – the perfect placement for a leader of a cultural revolution such as Jim Morrison was. Mars/Uranus combination also indicate someone whose sexual tastes can be eccentric or extreme, and who is never satisfied with the status quo.

His Venus was in Scorpio, showing that his relationships (Venus) were intense and rooted in issues of power and sexuality (Scorpio), and opposed his Moon in Taurus, expressing a need for physical pleasure […]
