Political astrology

What I believe: Can politics and astrology mix?

politics astrologyI have been writing this blog for a long time – since November 2005 to be exact.  During this time I’ve written over 2500 posts, and quite a few have been political in nature.  One of the things I enjoy exploring in these pages is how current astrological cycles affect humans on earth, and since politics is one big way that humans interact with each other it naturally seems to have a place in this commentary.

However, quite a few of my readers feel that there is no place for politics and astrology.  This reminds me of the late 1960s and the early 1970s when a conflict between the burgeoning spirituality movement collided with the burgeoning revolutionary movements, leading to the catchphrase “the personal IS political.”  Coincidentally (?), that time period was similar to the current one in that it followed a cycle of Uranus/Pluto and the associated revolution and upheaval.

Most astrologers appear to be more on the liberal end of the spectrum, although I suspect with the resurgence of traditional and ancient forms of astrology we are seeing more conservative astrologers who resonate more deeply with the writings of the ancients than the idea of transformation and letting go of outdated thoughts and ideas.  I tested this on my Facebook page and found that 10% of my readers lean to the conservative end of the spectrum, and 90% to the liberal end.

I believe that as an astrologer I have a duty to be as objective as possible when performing an analysis of an individual’s astrological chart and to use this information to educate and enlighten rather than to trash that individual or disrespect them.  That is sometimes a fine line to walk, especially in […]

Jupiter square Pluto: The Press vs Autocrat

CNNYesterday President Trump’s press secretary Sean Spicer banned CNN and the New York Times from the daily press briefings.  Trump has long had a contentious relationship with the mainstream media that he calls “fake news,” and his communications staff coined the term “alternative facts” to describe claims that do not fit the traditional definition of “true.”

Jupiter presides over the communication of shared ideas and is associated with journalism and the press as well as religion, theology and philosophy.  Pluto is the planet of power, as well as destruction and regeneration.  Capricorn’s realm is the material world, and with Pluto in the sign of Capricorn since 2008, it has been systematically destroying and regenerating the structures of society (Capricorn) including governments, corporations, schools, and even social institutions such as marriage and family.  The consolidation of power in certain strata of individuals and certain corporations has also been evident.

Jupiter is now in a challenging aspect to Pluto, which is still in conflict with the rebellious force of Uranus and as I wrote the other day Mars is involved now too.  Mars, a faster moving planet, tends to trigger larger cycles and the conflict between the current administration, which unabashedly seeks a consolidation of power in the Presidency (Pluto in Capricorn), and the press (Jupiter) has become inflamed (Mars).  This government seeks autonomy and independence (Uranus in Aries) and shows a pronounced disdain for traditional government/press relations anyway, so the astrological climate is pushing everything to a fevered peak.

Mars will soon move away so I expect there to be a temporary resolution, but the larger planetary cycle will continue until the fall as Jupiter retrogrades away from the square to Pluto in the early summer but comes back for […]

The astrology of Hillary Clinton: 2015 edition

Hillary-ClintonA portion of this article was originally written in 2006 before the 2008 elections.  This article is an astrological profile only and is not intended as a promotion of a particular candidate.

In a move that surprised literally no one, Hillary Clinton announced her candidacy for the 2016 elections.  In the past eight years since she first ran for president she appears to have mellowed and found her footing in the international political stage.

Birthchart and personality analysis

Since her appearance on the national political stage, there was no doubting the power of Hillary Clinton. Hillary had been an overachiever from an early age: in high school she served as class president, student council and debating team member, and member of the National Honor Society. As a Republican, she worked actively for the campaign of Barry Goldwater at the age of 16 and went on to become President of the Wellesley chapter of College Republicans. Moved by the death of Martin Luther King her political views became more liberal and she joined the Democratic party. Valedictorian of her class, she graduated with honors in political science and became the first student in the history of Wellesley College to deliver the commencement address at her own graduation.

Hillary went on to obtain a law degree from Yale with a specialization in children’s rights (another earmark for the Cancer ascendant which is focused on the family and nurturing). After marrying Bill Clinton and as the first female lawyer at the Rose Law firm, Hillary continued her child advocacy work on a pro bono basis.

Hillary Clinton’s birthchart shows a strong personality: She has four planets in intense Scorpio, including her Sun, Chiron, Venus and Mercury. Scorpio is an intensely emotional sign that imposes […]

Election Day Politics and the Uranus/Pluto square

voteI was watching Morning Joe this morning while exercising because there was nothing on the DVD.  Today is election day in the US so it was interesting hearing the discussion about which party will make the difference if they win the Senate.  What most of the panelists agree on is that there will be no difference – no matter which party wins tonight gridlock will continue.  If the Democrats retain the majority the two parties will fail to compromise, and if the Republicans win a majority there will be gridlock between the establishment Republicans and the more conservative challengers of their own party.

If they read the astrology news along with the Wall Street Journal they would understand that this is because of the square aspect between Uranus in Aries – the challenger, the innovator, the harbinger for change and individual rights – and Pluto in Capricorn – the holder and consolidator of power, the dominating force.  Ever since these two planets began their dance in 2010 (and before that really, since Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008) there has been this kind of tug and pull between conservative notions of reality (Capricorn Pluto) and the pressure to burst out of old paradigms and try something new (Aries Uranus).

The square aspect continues into 2015 so the pundits are correct when they say that this battle between the old and the new will continue until the 2016 elections.  In the meantime, the old structures are failing and the two party political system in the US may be falling with it.

European elections and political musings

Uranus square PlutoThe phrase “May you live in interesting times” has often been identified as a “Chinese curse,” although Wikipedia debunks that notion.  But the viewpoint that interesting times could be a curse supports the idea that change, for most people, is difficult.

We are living in very interesting times indeed, and heading into times that will be even more interesting as Uranus in Aries faces off against Pluto in Capricorn in June.  If you’re new here you’ll be reading a great deal more about this aspect and I hope to be putting up a major article on the subject this week.  Capricorn represents the established structures of power, and Aries represents the urge for self-determination.  Pluto is the planet of annhilation and transformation, so while it travels through Capricorn (through 2023) there is sure to be dramatic change in political structures around the world.

That began last weekend with elections in Europe as the established order lost power in many nations and splinter groups (Uranus represents the oddball fringe elements of society among other things) gained a footing in the governmental bodies of these nations.

Capricorn can be a sign of hardship, and austerity programs throughout Europe have attempted to get a handle on the rising debt that we saw increase during Pluto’s reign in Sagittarius (the sign of expansion and optimism).

The most unnerving sign of the upcoming Uranus/Pluto square was the rise of the ultra-right wing neo-Nazi party in Greece known as Golden Dawn.  Uranus in Aries represents the revolution (Uranus) of the individual (Aries).  This is a symbol of anarchy and ultimate liberation, and as it continues to face off against the power structures (Pluto in Capricorn) over the next three years the entire global political landscape […]
