Sagittarius Full Moon

The astrology of the “Full Flower Moon” in Sagittarius, May 29 2018

full flower moon may 2018This month’s Sagittarius Full Moon asks that we dig deep into our hearts to find our adventurous spirit.   Called the “Flower Moon” because in the northern hemisphere, where these names originated, May is the month where flowers reach their maximum bloom, this May Full Moon inspires us to reach beyond the stars into the great unknown to find our place there.

Zodiacal polarities are opposites, with each sign having something that the other lacks.  Gemini wants to take in every single bit of information without discrimination, just for the sake of learning and gaining experience.  Sagittarius, on the other hand, is imbued with a never ending desire to continually expand one’s knowledge and awareness of the outer world.  As polarities go, the Gemini/Sagittarius polarity is about the most harmonious – both signs seek understanding, but in different ways.

I love the image of the “Flower Moon” for the Sagittarius Full Moon – the flowering of wisdom and innate understanding; expanding our goals and dreams beyond what we thought was possible, the never ending search for meaning and truth.  At the full moon our the power of the heart reaches a peak and our subconscious awareness becomes richer and more easily accessible to the conscious mind.

The astrological dynamics of this Sagittarius Full Moon are heavily weighted towards the earth and water elements.  Earth and water are the “yin” elements, motivating security and emotions but not necessarily the action and expansion that the fire of Sagittarius craves.  However, the Full Moon Ruler (Jupiter) is tied into a lovely Grand Trine in water signs (Venus in Cancer, Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces) which aids in the process of expansion on an emotional level.  When we are […]

A Bountiful Sagittarius Full Moon on June 9 2017

The next Full Moon on June 9th brings with it an explosion of expansiveness and confidence.  The Moon will have reached its fullness in the sign of Sagittarius, urging us to reach for the stars and beyond what we imagine to be possible.  And Jupiter, the planetary ruler of Sagittarius, harmonizes with both the Sun and Moon, amplifying the expansive energies of this lunar experience.

Astrology teaches that there is darkness and light in all things.  The expansion and confidence of Jupiter’s influence lead us to unparalleled positivity and achievement, but if you have ever filled a balloon with too much air you will know what can happen when we expand beyond a reasonable amount.  Economists are well aware that too much expansive growth can lead to undesirable results, and we have seen this time after time with stock market bubbles, real estate bubbles, etc.

Fortunately this Full Moon contains a strong Saturn influence to help keep us tethered to the ground as we allow our spirits to soar to new lunar heights.  Saturn can be restrictive; its influence can feel discouraging and even sometimes depressing when it is connected to the Moon.  This could lead to feelings of despair or failure, but if you utilize Saturn’s practicality and mindfulness at this time it can be a wonderful ally, ensuring that your dreams and ideals hatched and fertilized at the Sagittarius Full Moon are grounded in the real world with lasting permanence.

When Henry David Thoreau said “Go forth confidently in the direction of your dreams” he must have been under the Sagittarius Full Moon!

Report on the Full Moon Summer Solstice

full moon summer solsticePhoto from Space.com

While the Summer Solstice is usually celebrated on June 21st, the astrological Solstice occurs when the Sun enters Cancer, and that occurred this year on June 20th.  This Summer Solstice coincided with the Full Moon, something we hadn’t seen apparently since 1948 (according to news reports).

The Sun is strongest in a sign when it first enters that sign, and when the Sun enters one of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) it is even stronger.  The cardinal signs initiate a new season – a new phase in human life – and the energies in the Solstice and Equinox charts are often used to forecast the weather for the season.

The Full Moon occurred at the 29th degree of Sagittarius – the so-called “anaretic” degree.  The 29th degree, sometimes called the “critical” or “anaretic” degree, is associated with the endings of cycles and new beginnings.  The word “anaretic” derives from “anareta,” which in medieval astrology signified the planet of death in the natal horoscope.  This is likely what has given the 29th degree such a bad rap in traditional astrology, although endings are actually the harbinger of new beginnings and not to be feared.

So we have the conclusion of a lunar cycle occurring at the same time as a beginning of a solar cycle – a confluence of events that signifies a closing of one door and an opening of another.  The Sagittarius Full Moon seeks expansive dreams and increased wisdom, and the Summer Solstice and Cancerian Sun brings fertility and water to nurture the soil and plants.

However, with Saturn (rules and boundaries) in Sagittarius (expansion and faith) we have to continue to set limits and be realistic (Saturn) and careful […]

Light a fire with the Sagittarius New Moon November 22!

Sagittarius Full MoonEvery New Moon brings a new beginning with the new lunar cycle.  The Sun and the Moon come together in an alchemical conjunctio – the reunification of the masculine conscious force (Sun) with the instinctive lunar feminine (Moon).  When this new beginning occurs in Sagittarius, the sign of adventure and ideas and meaning and just plain fun, we have the opportunity to bring in more zest and gusto.  Suddenly we are aware of unlimited possibilities, and our view across the future is longer and more encouraging.

The symbolism of the New Moon is even more powerful since the both the Sun and Moon are at the very first degree of Sagittarius.  A New Moon at the first degree of a sign is very symbolic of a fresh new energy coming into our lives and sweeping away the old. Under the influence of Scorpio the dead and dying aspects of our lives were immolated in fire, and now under Sagittarius the old is swept away and a new expansive way of looking at the world emerges. Curiosity and knowledge: Keys to the Sagittarius Full Moon, June 2014

The Sagittarius Full Moon takes place just after midnight on June 13th Eastern time.  The Moon in Sagittarius encourages us to expand our visions – to aim higher and gain greater understanding.

In Sagittarius we refuse to take no for an answer – suddenly we know that we can do and be more than we ever thought possible before. Like all Full Moons, the Sagittarius Moon will be exactly opposite the Sun in Gemini.   Gemini wants to embrace the entire world – Sagittarius chooses instead to learn and grow more deeply in knowledge.

In this Full Moon we seek to balance our curiosity and tendency to take the superficial road (Gemini) with the lunar desire to seek the greater truth.  Gemini’s ruler is Mercury, and Mercury is retrograde now.  Gemini has the tendency to take in too much data and become distracted, and the retrograde Mercury encourages this tendency which can make the expansion and focus process more difficult.  Balance and equilibrium between these two opposing forces is the key.

Venus is active now, harmonizing with Chiron to facilitate healing and wisdom in our relationships, and opposing Saturn to emphasize our obligations and responsibilities to the people around us.  The Sagittarius Full Moon seeks expansion and the freedom to pursue our dreams, and under  this combination of influences we may feel that our duties to others (Venus/Saturn) interfere with our soul’s need to be free to seek experiences that teach us (Gemini/Sagittarius). Mars challenges Pluto right now, potentially inflaming situations but also adding creative fire to everything we do.  A harmonious trine from Saturn to Chiron will help to soften the hard edges, healing the sore spots so that we don’t become stuck in the darkness.

Full Moons illuminate the darkness – now is the time to let your […]
