The astrology of Clarence Thomas

When I have a session with a new client, I like the astrology to speak for itself. I never Google the client, or look at their website when they send me a link. Rather than try to fit the astrology into my idea of who the person is, I would rather see what the astrology says since my view may be flawed. That process is more difficult when doing a profile for a public person. We see their actions, and we have an opinion about them. And while I try to remain neutral in these profiles my bias will sometimes leak into the astrological information. This post is about Clarence Thomas as a human being and is not meant to be an endorsement of his political influence.

Clarence Thomas has a fascinating biography. He was born into a poor Gullah community (descendants of slaves who have lived relatively intact in the sea communities of Georgia and South Carolina since post-slavery times) and went on to attend Yale law school and sit on the highest court of the land.

(Thanks as always to Astro.com for hunting down accurate birth information.) Thomas was born with the Sun in Cancer, the sign of deep feelings and love of family. Cancerians tend to have a strong sense of history and connection to community. Thomas’s Sun conjoins Mercury, planet of the mind, which always suggests an individual of high intelligence; however, when the planet of the mind is in the sign of feelings, there is an emotionality in thought and communication that is not always helpful. The Sun/Mercury pairing includes the addition of Venus (relating) – a Cancerian stellium of deep sentimentality and like the crab it symbolizes, a rough outer shell which hides a well of emotion and vulnerability.

Pluto: A Case Study

This article has been updated from an earlier post.

Last week I saw a client (let’s call her Sylvia) whose birthchart demonstrates the power of Pluto. Sylvia’s Sun is in the hard-working sign of Capricorn: Capricorns typically have a difficult life when they’re young but because they’re such hard workers (ruled by the Celestial Taskmaster himself, Saturn) they can be quite powerful as they age and incorporate life’s lessons. She also has a Grand Trine including Mars, Jupiter and her Moon, bestowing a sense of inner trust (Jupiter/Moon) that life has meaning as well as a dynamic will (Mars/Jupiter) for self-preservation (Mars/Moon). These are the tools that have helped her to navigate a difficult life that has been Pluto’s gift to her. Note to astrologers: to protect her privacy I will not be posting her chart.

Pluto in the astrological chart shows where we come face to face with the underworld of our emotions: fear, compulsion, obsession. Pluto often shows where we face the cold reality of death in order to come to a greater understanding of life. Astrologer Liz Greene says that Pluto represents the essential life force in nature that often must destroy in order to survive. The power of Pluto is that basic, and that intense. When we’re in the middle of a Plutonic disaster (our spouse leaves us, we lose our job, our house burns down, our cat dies) we are lost in the underworld of our fear and the pain of loss that is Pluto’s realm. But once the storm has passed we find ourselves rebuilding the wreckage of our lives with a new sense of empowerment that comes from having faced our fears and survived.

Pluto is conjunct Sylvia’s ascendant (persona and identity) within one […]

Planetary news this week: Jupiter/Pluto dance and Mars in Aquarius

astrologyDeviant Art.  Jupiter’s expansive beneficence (is that a word??)  has been intertwined in a couple of lovely dances this summer with Neptune (culminating August 8 2018) and with Pluto (culminating September 12 2018).  These are the final interactions in a series that began in December with Jupiter trine Neptune and in January with Jupiter sextile Pluto.

The outer planets are transformational forces – unlike the visible personal planets which address personality factors and tendencies, the transformational planets inspire personal evolution and sometimes bring about events in our lives which unfold into a dramatic change of some kind. While Jupiter’s influence tends to be personal – it can bring about good luck and good fortune and instill confidence and optimism.  When harmonizing in a trine with Neptune, the planet of transcendence and creative imagination, Jupiter facilitates the flow of consciousness expansion and increased awareness

Where trines are easy and flowing aspects that bring harmony between planets, sextiles are more dynamic and add a little excitement. In sextile to Pluto, Jupiter acts as a guide to help us into Pluto’s Underworld where the great treasures can be found – not only the treasures of the psyche and the magic of the great philosophical mysteries, but also the very keys to unlocking the mystery of Self Knowledge.

But all is not rosy in the planetary sphere – a challenging square between Saturn (tests and hardship)  and Chiron (emotional wounds which require release) which was in play in 2017 has returned to align within a degree.  Square aspects between planets often motivate some sort of crisis in order to achieve resolution, but when the aspect is super close like this one but doesn’t ever quite align, there may just be an unsettled […]

The Taurus Full Moon showers blessings on November 4, 2017

A glorious Full Moon in Taurus showers its blessings on November 4th. Ruled by Venus, Taurus calls upon us to put aside the extremes of our ideas and emotions and find a harmonious balance of peace and comfort.

Venus is well known for its association with love and beauty, but also governs the manner in which we view our life – our aesthetics, our self-esteem and, our ability to create resources out of the raw material of our day to day existence.

Under the Full Moon, the Scorpio Sun and its opposite, the Taurus Moon, struggle for supremacy and ultimately find integration.  The intensity of Scorpio finds balance against the placid nature of Taurus, softening some of Scorpio’s hard edges and urging us to ground and center into the Earth.

Venus is very active in this Full Moon: a Venus/Saturn combination offers stability in our relationships, but a stressful Venus/Uranus aspect could be divisive and require us to put space in our dealing with others where needed.

In addition, the challenging square between Saturn (restriction and tests) and Chiron (wounding and healing) is culminating now, facilitating our own transition through the healing journey into the comfort of the healed. Because this Full Moon is so centered on the influence of Venus, our relationships will be critical and areas that have been difficult could blossom into something magical.

This is a good time to bring people together over food, or in the enjoyment of beauty such as a trip to a museum or park. The pleasures of the physical realm will help to smooth any rough edges that Uranus may infuse into the Full Moon experience.

Planetary news this week: October 23, 2017

This week brings some shifts in energies as the Sun moves into Scorpio, beginning the Scorpio season of darkness, myth and magic.  With the mind already processing the inner workings of the psyche now that Mercury is in Scorpio, and Jupiter’s entry into Scorpio squeezes out the nasty secrets in the entertainment business as well as the political realm (both Jupiter’s realm), we can no longer hide from the difficult and the dark.

On a positive note, challenging conversations may become easier under the influence of Scorpio, and our personal path to growth can be illuminated with the Sun aligned with expansive Jupiter.  Mars, the planet that inspires and motivates us, has moved into Libra where it yearns to find balance and integrate the confusion of opposites into one complete whole of understanding and compassion.

Over the next two weeks you may find yourself feeling more emotionally sensitive and reactive than usual as a challenging square aspect takes shape between Saturn (tests and insecurity) and Chiron (emotional wounds).  While this can be an uncomfortable dynamic, it can also help to facilitate the processing and release of old wounds that bind us to the past.
