Saturn Uranus

Landmark health care legislation passes

health care reformThe US House of Representatives passed Obama’s health care bill last night, paving the way to the bill being signed into law.

Under the opposition of Saturn to Uranus which began in the fall of 2008 and will conclude this summer, it has been virtually impossible to obtain any kind of compromise between two opposing views. In the American political landscape this has occurred not only between liberals (Uranus) and conservatives (Saturn), but also between the left and right ends of each political party. The idea of compromise has become a badge of weakness rather than a time honored tool for moving through the gridlock of politics.

President Obama ran for office on a platform of bringing opposing views together so that change could occur, but the people that voted for him seem to forget that in order to achieve that kind of unification not everyone will get exactly what they want. Liberals have disowned him over the public option, which likely would have spelled the end of insurance companies as we know it. Conservatives have disowned him over the idea that the health reform plan will cost a lot of money to implement, forgetting that our current health care system will swallow us up in any case in the next decade.

The fact is, under Pluto in Capricorn there is no way to achieve financial stability without tightening our belts a bit and facing the hard realities of our situation.

Obama has some interesting planetary transits right now. Saturn has been transiting his progressed Sun which is completing a 30-year pass through Virgo and will soon (September) enter Libra, the sign of compromise and diplomacy. Perhaps his achievement of […]

Saturn/Uranus: Revolution in Iran

Just after the opposition between Saturn and Uranus culminated last week, tens of thousands of protesters filled the streets of Tehran on Friday in a rare show of opposition against the pro-Palestinian rhetoric of Iranian president Ahmadinejad whose anti-Israeli speeches on Jerusalem Day gave rise to chants like this one:  “Not Gaza, Not Lebanon, I’ll sacrifice my life for Iran.”

Tension has been fomenting in Iran since the Iranian elections in June when Ahmadinejad won in a widely disputed landslide over challenger Hussein Moussavi, and we can see the events on the ground reflected in the astrological signatures.  The progressed Sun (national identity) in the chart of Iran last year conjoined Chiron (sensitivity and wounding/healing) at the very top of the chart, the point that we call the Midheaven, the point that represents the national government and its place in the world community.  Iranian dissidents are more and more sensitive now to their place in the global environment, and more and more open in their disdain for the oddly apocalyptic ideas of their President.

We are in the third phase of the opposition between Saturn and Uranus, and this conflict between the desire to return to the safety of the past (Saturn) and the desire for that which is new and revolutionary (Uranus) is clearly seen in the leadership of Ahmadinejad.  He is both a  revolutionary (Uranus) and a reactionary (Saturn), wanting to return to repressive conservative values (Saturn) while blowing Israel off the map (Uranus).  This phase of the opposition of Saturn to Uranus is aspecting exactly Mars in the chart of Iran.  Mars is the warrior – the aggressive instinct that seeks self-preservation and the gratification of desire.  There is a tremendous amount of anger in that […]

Powerful Virgo New Moon on Friday

art by Oxana Zuboff

The New Moon on Friday September 18, 2009 captures all of the powerful September planetary events and provides us with an opportunity to pull them all together for the new lunar cycle.  New Moons, remember, represent the beginning of a brand new lunar experience as the Moon conjoins the Sun and their dance begins anew.

The New Moon is actually the dark of the Moon – the Sun completely obscures the Moon’s light, and we begin the new cycle in a void.  This is an opportunity to let go of the lessons learned from the previous lunar cycle and begin the anew in the sign of Virgo.

Virgo isn’t a very exciting sign – it won’t bring fame or fortune like Leo, and it won’t attract passion and power like Scorpio.  Virgo is all about the necessary things we have to do to maintain life in a body like eating right, getting enough exercise, making sure our teeth are brushed and our house is clean.  But Virgo also inspires the powers of perception and discrimination.  Under Virgo’s influence we are able to sort through the complex factors that tend to confuse as and achieve clarity and purpose.

This New Moon sits right on the Saturn end of the Saturn/Uranus opposition, suggesting that the tension here between the Uranian drive for change and the Saturnian drive for discipline and convention will be exacerbated, but the Virgo influence will attempt to impose some kind of order on this tension.  Virgo wants to be prepared for everything, and needs a road map before beginning any kind of new adventure.  During this New Moon we will be called on to create a plan and a strategy (Virgo/Saturn) to help […]

Saturn/Uranus and “jackass moments”

Kanye West has never been known for his humility or circumspect behavior.  I wrote a post on him a couple of years ago after he compared himself to Jesus, and since then he hasn’t really mellowed much.

But his behavior on Sunday night’s Video Music Awards program on MTV was really astonishing.   Snatching the microphone away from Taylor Swift, winner in the “Best Female Video” category, he ranted that Beyonce should have won.

President Obama called him a “jackass,” and who can argue with him.  Just days before, South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson interrupted Obama’s speech to call him a liar, and then there was Serena Williams‘ own jackass moment.  Still…the reactions to these events have appeared to be overamplified, leading a commenter calling him/herself the Cynical Astrologer to note: “hysterical overreacting–from CNN on 9/11 to Joe Wilson, Serena Williams, et al to astrologers everywhere–is the main manifestation of th[e Saturn/Uranus opposition] aspect.”

There is such a sense now of opposition with this aspect, as I discussed the other day, that these events have a reach that extend far beyond the immediacy of their obnoxiousness.  I was invited today to join a Facebook group: 1,000,000 people against Joe Wilson.  The problem is, the greater a reaction to an event, the greater the apparent significance that event takes on.  Instead, we all take sides and the controversy expands and grows, expanding conflict and making compromise more and more impossible.

I hope that this is merely a function of the Saturn/Uranus opposition, which peaks today for the third time.  We do have two more phases of this cycle, but with Pluto having turned direct I’d like to think we can now move forward with some more important issues.

The resignation of Van Jones: A casualty of the Saturn/Uranus opposition

With Saturn and Uranus preparing to oppose each other exactly next week, the middle of the night resignation of Van Jones as the “Green Jobs Czar” in the Obama administration may be a hint as to which of the planets is winning.  Saturn represents society and structure, and Uranus is rebellion and new ideas.  When the conservative media discovered that Van Jones had signed a petition asking then Attorney General Eliot Spitzer to investigate possible government complicity in the September 11 tragedy, the resulting firestorm among conservative pundits exacerbated the already heated debate over the policies of the Obama administration.

President Obama was elected on November 4, the exact day of the first phase of the opposition from Saturn to Uranus.  He was elected because the majority of the people in the United States wanted change.  He ran on a platform of affordable health care, bringing jobs to Americans, withdrawing troops from Iraq, and changing the partisan ways of Washington.

Every attempt that he has made to fulfill these promises has been met with fierce opposition; not because of bad policy, but because conservatives want him to fail.  The downfall of Van Jones was orchestrated not by a debate over his usefulness, but because Glenn Beck the ignorant clown on Fox News who is even more absurd than Rush Limbaugh, began to ratchet up the pressure after a group that Jones was formerly involved with urged a boycott of Beck’s show.

Many of the left are upset with Obama for continuing to try to build alliances with conservatives in order to accomplish his agenda, but they are missing the point.  In a Saturn/Uranus time such as this, any big change cannot occur without support from both sides and that requires a putting aside of one’s need to be right.  Obama, with his […]
