Planetary news this week: Lunar eclipse at the Scorpio Full Moon

Astrological update for the week of May 1-8, 2023

Pluto turns retrograde May 1. Although the lunar eclipse on May 5th is the headline event, there’s a few other things going on too! First, Pluto makes its retrograde turn on Monday May 1st but you probably won’t even notice because Pluto has been stationary in the sky for over a month, and will continue to be virtually stationary for several more weeks. That makes the influence of Pluto more potent, and its transformative effect is likely to feel something like a sledgehammer especially if it’s hitting something sensitive in your own chart (around 0 degrees of the fixed signs Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio and Leo).

Sun/Mercury conjunction May 1. The conjunction of the Sun and Mercury is an important part of the retrograde Mercury cycle, and when Mercury is retrograde as it is now the conjunction to the Sun marks the midpoint of the retrograde cycle. I know that conjunctions of the Sun to another planet (combust and cazimi) are supposed to be “bad” and burn up the planetary energies with solar light, but illumination from the Sun can shed light on events that may be misunderstood or mysterious. The Mercury retrograde review can help us to gain greater understanding which will help improve our progress when Mercury turns direct again.

Lunar eclipse May 5. The Scorpio Full Moon occurs at astrological Beltane: the midpoint between the solstice and the equinox. This is a magical time of power when in the northern hemisphere the world comes to life again after the winter and the heat of the summer begins to prevail.

This is a partial eclipse and the South Node is 11 degrees away […]

Astrological news this week: Mercury, Jupiter and a Scorpio SuperMoon eclipse

Astrological update for the week of May 9-16, 2022

There’s a lot going on this week!   Mercury turns retrograde on May 10th, the same day that Jupiter enters Aries.  Mercury is in Gemini now, a sign in which it is very much at home, but it will retrograde back into Taurus on May 22nd. Mercury is the planet associated with mental activity, the processing of information, short travels and the operation of equipment. Where Mercury in Gemini is active and curious, easily able to change and adapt, Taurus is a fixed sign and Mercury in Taurus tends to be more stubborn and resists change which can make a retrograde period more difficult. During retrograde periods of any planet there is a tendency to retrace our steps and look back to re-assess aspects of our life which may not be ideal, and that is particularly true when Mercury is retrograde.  So take precautions and be careful with communication and any processing of information, but expect that glitches may happen anyway. No need to put your life on hold or delay doing something important!

Jupiter enters Aries on May 10th, and you can read all about that here. Venus is already in Aries, and this infusion of fire will help to shake off some of the fairy dust of the Pisces stellium that’s been in effect over the past month. The challenge of Pisces is to find that boundary line between Jupiterian optimism and Neptunian illusion, and Jupiter moving from Pisces to Aries will hopefully help us to burn through any clouds of confusion. I’m also hoping it will bring an end to the stock market decline.

Full Moon in Scorpio, April 26, 2021: Challenging the Saturn/Uranus square

Photo from PixelsTalk

A portion of this article was posted last week but has been updated.  All Full Moons are formed by a polarity between the Sun in one sign balanced against the Moon in the opposite sign. Each opposing pair is a cycle of energy that flows from one sign to the other, each sign containing what the other lacks. Scorpio and Taurus are both fixed signs, both are highly personal signs with one being ruled by Mars (Scorpio) and one by Venus (Taurus). Both are concerned with matters of earthly life, but in Taurus we hold on to who we are, and in Scorpio we must let go of who we think we are in order to become transformed in the purging fire. Taurus seeks harmony and serenity, and Scorpio seeks passion and drama.

Tonight’s Full Moon (culminating at 11:30 pm EDT) is a SuperMoon (™ astrologer Richard Nolle). The SuperMoon occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth – the Moon appears bigger than usual in the sky, and the qualities of the lunar influence intensifies – higher tides, heightened emotions, etc.

Until Mars entered Cancer last week there was a lack of the water element in the skies – we have lots of Aquarian air of the intellect, and some Taurus earthy grounding energies, but the watery energies of feeling and emotion have not had an easy conduit through which to flow.  The Scorpio Full Moon will change all that: Scorpio is the sign of intensity and passion, the impulse that pulls us into the deepest part of our soul and forces us to experience life in the most profound way possible.

Passion and adjustment: Scorpio Full Moon May 7, 2020

artist unknown

At any Full Moon we are dealing with two opposite signs with opposing polarities, each one needing what the other one possesses in order to become truly whole.  This can serve to bring out our inner contradictions, and heighten the intense emotionality for which the Full Moon is well known.  The Scorpio Full Moon features an opposition to the Taurus Sun: the intensity and passion of Scorpio needs to find balance against the need for serenity and peacefulness of Taurus.  Both are fixed signs: stubborn and powerful, with a tendency towards rigidity and difficulty letting go.  Scorpio, though, is intensely emotional and dramatic where Taurus is, or at least wants to be, placid but still powerful – very like the bull for which it is named.

This Full Moon reminds us that we can become our best selves when we find balance between these two dynamics:  the power of emotions and the power of stillness.  The potency of this time is echoed in the fact that the astrological Beltane, a fire festival honoring the god Belenos (the shining one), occurs at the midway point between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice, at 15 degrees Taurus.  The Vesak festival honoring not only the birth of Buddha, but also his enlightenment and death,  is a festival of lights which takes place each year at the Scorpio Full Moon.  Scorpio is ruled for its passionate potency, and the Scorpio Full Moon has the potential to create a powerful force of Will which can be used to create and manifest.  The Scorpio Full Moon calls on us to explore the deep realms of the unconscious and our own passionate natures and come to terms with our own inner […]

Sunday poetry for the transformation of the Scorpio Full Moon

“There is a secret place. A radiant sanctuary. As real as your own kitchen. More real than that. Constructed of the purest elements. Overflowing with the ten thousand beautiful things. Worlds within worlds. Forest, rivers. Velvet coverlets thrown over featherbeds, fountains bubbling beneath a canopy of stars. Bountiful forests, universal libraries. A wine cellar offering an intoxication so sweet you will never be sober again. A clarity so complete you will never again forget.

“This magnificent refuge is inside you. Enter. Shatter the darkness that shrouds the doorway. Step around the poisonous vipers that slither at your feet, attempting to throw you off your course. Be bold. Be humble. Put away the incense and forget the incantations they taught you. Ask no permission from the authorities. Slip away. Close your eyes and follow your breath to the still place that leads to the invisible path that leads you home.

“Listen. Softly, the One you love is calling. Listen. At first, you will only hear traces of his voice. Love letters he drops for you in hiding places. In the sound of your baby laughing, in your boyfriend telling you a dream, in a book about loving-kindness, in the sun dipping down below the horizon and a peacock’s tail of purple and orange clouds unfolding behind it, in the nameless sorrow that fills your heart when you wake in the night and remember that the world has gone to war and you are powerless to break up the fight. Let the idle chatter between friends drop down to what matters. Listen. Later his voice will come closer. A whisper you’re almost sure is meant for you fading in and out of the cacophony of thoughts, clearer in the silent space between […]
