Current events from an astrological perspective: Black lives suddenly matter, and other news

One thing we might be wondering right now is why the time is suddenly ripe for the US to embrace the Black Lives Matter movement.  Marches to protest the murder of George Floyd by the police (represented by Capricorn – the structural foundations of society) have spread like wildfire around the world.  Even Mitt Romney is marching in protest.

The killing of black people in America isn’t new.  When black people were brought to this country in slave ships, many died along the way.  Others were killed trying to escape, or if they didn’t behave.  After the civil war, black people were killed as they tried to make a new life post-slavery.  Black people were killed during Jim Crow.  Black people were killed during the civil rights movement.  Black people are consistently killed by police at higher rates than white people.  We can argue the reasons, but the statistics are clear.

The Black Lives Matter movement began officially in 2014 after the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. At the time, the world was in the throes of a challenging square alignment between Uranus, planet of revolution, in the sign of Aries the warrior, to Pluto, planet of destruction and transformation, in the sign of Capricorn the structural foundation.  This major planetary cycle lasted between 2010 and 2017, overseeing shifts of power and control across the globe. And yet, the BLM movement was marginalized and not taken seriously until the killing of George Floyd.  So why now?

The (Sibley) chart for the United States featured Pluto, the planet of death and creative destruction, in the second house of possessions and money.  The early slave owners for the most part considered their slaves possessions rather than human beings (we could […]

The US Seventh House of Enemies

Nations have astrological charts, and although usually there is a great deal of debate over which chart to use for a particular nation, the chart commonly accepted by most astrologers, and the one that I use, is the Sibley chart of July 4, 1776 at 5:10 pm, Philadelphia, with Sagittarius rising.  In this chart, the Sun – the primary driver of the personality in both individuals and in mundane charts of nations – is in the seventh house.

We think today of the seventh house as being the house of marriage and partnership, but traditionally it is also the place where “open enemies” can be found.  When the Sun is in the seventh house, we tend to define ourselves through our partnerships and observe ourselves through the eyes of the “other.”  This is certainly true of the United States the very existence of which originated in a war for independence, a separation of the US from the “other” – the parent country England.  (Saturn, the planet of tests and challenges, lives in the tenth house of the Sibley chart which in the chart of an individual often represents the parent as well as the expression of the entity in the outer world, reflecting a difficult separation from the parent country.)

The United States has always defined itself through the idea of an enemy.  The Cancerian Sun is oriented towards the idea of tribal loyalty and affiliation, and in the seventh house the tribe organizes against the enemy.  Originally of course this enemy against whom all citizens joined together was England.  After the Revolutionary War, settlers and citizens of the new Republic went to war against the native Americans and THEY became the enemy until the Mexican American war, at which […]

The astrology of the US addiction to guns, 2017 edition

Astrology of guns USAMuch of this article is reposted from a post from 2013.  Since then we have had the worst mass shootings in US history:

  • Las Vegas, Oct 2017: 58 dead
  • Orlando, June 2016: 49 dead
  • Virginia Tech, Apr 2007: 32 dead
  • Sandy Hook, Dec 2012: 27 dead
  • Texas church, Nov 2017: 26 dead

Everywhere you turn these days the discussion is about guns.

Guns are not a new topic for discussion, but the feverish frenzy over which gun rights advocates are protecting their rights to own assault weapons and other types of weapons meant for mass killings is rather recent.

There is no nation like the United States in terms of gun ownership.  The (Sibly) chart of the United States has Sagittarius rising, which echoes the expansive philosophies that have always drove the country towards constant expansion and religious ideals, both Sagittarian concepts.  We normally would look towards Mars for signs of warfare like behavior, but in the US chart the passion for guns is found in the placement of Pluto in the second house.  This fanatacisim about guns originates not in an aggressive desire to assert force (Mars) but in a hunger for freedom (Sagittarius ascendant) and a relentless (Pluto) drive to accumulate masses of money through manipulation of the nation’s ideals (second house).

American gun lovers don’t want to accumulate stockpiles of weapons to kill their neighbors.  They want these weapons because they believe that it will protect that Sagittarius rising freedom.  It doesn’t hurt that Uranus (planet of liberation from oppression) conjoins both Venus (partners) and Mars (aggression) in the chart.  That Uranus/Mars conjunction especially denotes a radical desire for liberty at all costs.  Americans own twice as many guns as any other country, per capita.

That’s […]

Happy Birthday USA!!

(A portion of this article is taken from an earlier post.) The date and time of birth of the American nation has been a matter of debate for centuries now. Most astrologers use the “Sibley” chart for the US, named after Ebenezer Sibley, a prominent American astrologer in the late 1700s.

According to Benson Bobrick’s excellent work The Fated Sky Sibley, a Freemason, was well practiced in the field of mundane astrology, known for his accurate political predictions regarding both the American and French revolutions. Sibley also predicted that America would one day “have an extensive and flourishing commerce; advantageous and universal traffic to every quarter of the globe, with great security and prosperity amongst its people,” and eventually be “a new Empire that shall soon or late give laws to the whole world. ” This is rather startling considering the fact that Masonic historian Manly P Hall has reported that the US has a secret destiny:

“Thousands of years ago, in Egypt, these mystical orders were aware of the existence of the western hemisphere and the great continent which we call America. The bold resolution was made that this western continent should become the site of the philosophic empire. Just when this was done it is impossible now to say, but certainly the decision was reached prior to the time of Plato, for a thinly veiled statement of this resolution is the substance of his treatise on the Atlantic Islands.” (from Manly P Hall’s Secret Destiny of America).

Suffice it to say that Sibley had a mystical and Masonic background, and since most of America’s founders were Masons and therefore very concerned with matters of the occult, Sibley most likely had direct information regarding the actual time for the birthchart of the United States, and […]

A Big Shift for the United States

Mundane astrology is the study of world events (mundus in ancient Greek means world) by examining the horoscopes of nations and events as if those entities were living and breathing beings, with personalities and characteristics just like humans. I confess that this branch of astrology has never held much meaning for me — my field of interest is in the evolution of the human spirit and character. But there is a lot of buzz right now about one specific event that is getting ready to occur: the change of direction of the Progressed Mars in the chart of the United States.

The date and time of birth of the American nation has been a matter of debate for centuries now.
