Sun conjunct Saturn

Planetary news: Mercury in Aquarius and the Pisces New SuperMoon

Astrological update for the week of February 13-20, 2023

Mercury in Aquarius. Mercury left the solid, practical sign of Capricorn for Aquarius on February 11th, joining the Sun and Saturn in the sign of the collective. Aquarius is a very dry sign – ruled by both Saturn and Uranus, Aquarius is the quintessence of rational thinking and logic, so when the planet of the mind (Mercury) is in the sign of logic (Aquarius), there is an emphasis on reason and detachment (Saturn rulership) as opposed to the feeling and intuition of the water signs. Aquarius is symbolized by the “water bearer” though, reflecting the wisdom of life that flows from the heavens, through intuition and the higher mind (the Uranus connection).

While Mercury is in Aquarius over the next few weeks it will interact with virtually every other planet in the sky – some harmonious and some challenging. But this highly active Mercury suggests that the mind and mental functions will be highlighted over this period and we may be flooded with new ideas which can lead to some mental exhaustion. Mercury in Aquarius can be very electrical which can lead to overload, so spending some time in quiet contemplation will help to balance out any tendency towards overthinking and a mind that won’t stop racing.

Sun enters Pisces, and the third New SuperMoon in a row. This week brings the Pisces New Moon on February 20 just after the Sun enters Pisces. This is the third New Moon at perigee (closest to Earth) in a row, beginning the season of Pisces and an emergence of heart-opening compassion and the illumination of imagination. With the New Moon at its closest point to Earth, and at the first […]

The Winter Solstice and the return of the light: today!!

Winter Solstice astrology Deviant Art

The Winter Solstice is upon us: the day when the Sun enters Capricorn in the tropical zodiac. We have already talked about Saturn having just entered Capricorn, and Saturn and the Sun align today as well.

The chart for the Winter Solstice is often used to forecast the energies of the coming season (until the Spring Equinox at zero Aries).  The conjunction of the Sun to Saturn at the Winter Solstice embeds this energy into the energy of the season, bringing our attention away from relaxation and pleasure to a more disciplined and focused approach. While the primary focus is on that which is real, a harmonious trine between Jupiter (expansion) and Neptune (creativity and inspiration) helps us to continue to grow our dreams while setting and realizing our concrete goals.  Mars is tied in there too, in Scorpio where it is quite powerful, helping to fuel and energize our thoughts to action.

We also have the asteroids speaking out quite loudly in this chart, with Ceres (nurturing) aligned with the North Node to help support us on the journey to the future.  Vesta, encouraging us to allow our own creativity to emerge from our heart’s fires, is aligned with Jupiter and tied into that lovely trine described above.  Pallas, goddess of creative intelligence, aligns with Uranus, representing intuition and multidimensional awareness. Juno, bestower of marriage and keeper of the nuclear family, aligns with the Moon to strengthen the bonds of those we live with and love. And last but not least, the Black Moon Lilith – the primal feminine power – aligns with Pluto, planet of empowerment and transformation, forcing us to face any darkness in order to transform it into light.

Sunday inspiration: Father’s day musings

father's day astrologyFather’s Day (like Mother’s Day) can be very difficult for those of us who have lost a father through death or estrangement.

It’s interesting that the astrological Sun represents the father, and it also represents the Self.  While the mother has traditionally been the source of nurturing and emotional containment and therefore symbolized by the Moon, the father has traditionally been the figure of power in the household and the giver of name and identity.  In monotheistic society, the one god is seen as male, symbolizing that power.

In our modern world these roles are changing, such as when a father stays home to care for the children while the mother goes out to the workplace, and it is always interesting to see how this is reflected in the birthcharts of the children in these families.

Traditionally, though, challenging aspects to the Sun suggest a difficult relationship with the father.  We see this in the chart of Barack Obama, with Neptune in a square aspect to the Sun, who later wrote a book called “Dreams (Neptune) of my father (Sun)” about his struggle to understand himself (Sun) through the legacy of the father.  In my own chart Saturn and Neptune flank my Sun in a triple conjunction and Uranus squares the trio.  I had a very difficult relationship with my own father and we have been estranged for about 20 years.

The role of the father is to help to define the Self, and without a father in one’s life that job becomes more difficult.  Many of us search for years for father figures who will help us to find our Selves when they have become lost.  In modern society, only 16% of custodial parents in single parent […]

The astrology of Justin Bieber’s sudden rise

Justin Bieber zodiacJustin Bieber will appear on Saturday Night Live this weekend, assuring his place in mainstream America forever.  Justin Bieber is only sixteen, but he has seemingly taken the world by storm with his popular R&B-style performances.  Evidently both Usher and Justin Timberlake wanted to sign Bieber.  His first album was released in November of 2009 and went platinum almost immediately.

For me the interesting thing astrologically about Justin Bieber is that he is one of the Uranus/Neptune kids – the kids that were born when Uranus and Neptune were conjunct in the sky between 1992 and 1995.  That particular combination of planets has a quality of genius but also of psychological difficulties as the radical innovation of Uranus combines with the fantasy and illusion of Neptune.  There is an enormous amount of creative potential with this entire generation, but many of them are extremely sensitive emotionally as well.  It is under this influence that the concept of “Indigo Children” arose, and many of the kids of this age group exhibit these Indigo tendencies such as heightened psychic awareness and sensitivity.

Justin Bieber’s creativity is obvious in his chart with his Piscean Sun and Venus.  Pisces is the sign that seeks to transcend material reality and move into a realm of imagination and wonder.  However, Saturn conjoins Justin’s Sun which gives him both a sense of insecurity as well as the desire and need to work hard and to build something, even at a young age.

It’s rare that someone with a sensitive Pisces Sun conjoined by repressive and insecure Saturn achieves this kind of fame so early, but Justin has Pluto, the planet of personal empowerment and transformation, in a very tight conjunction to his North Node […]
