Planetary news this week: Saturn direct and the Sun/Venus dance

Astrological update for the week of October 17-23, 2022

art by Carol Drury

Retrograde update. The retrograde forces that dominated August and September continue to fade, and after Saturn turns direct this week there will be three planets traveling in retrograde motion (Jupiter, Neptune, Uranus) as well as Chiron. This may seem like a lot, but this is a more normal number of retrogrades and the forces that pull us back into the past to review and reflect are beginning to lessen.

Saturn station. The challenging square from Saturn to Uranus which came very close to an exact alignment over the past few weeks is also starting to fade, and with it the forces of rebellion and conflict which dominated the story of 2021 will also start to retreat. Saturn, the planet that teaches endurance and the value of discipline and hard work, is stationary in the sky right now as it prepares to change direction. When a planet appears to “station” before a change of direction its influence intensifies, especially if you have sensitive planets between 15 and 20 degrees of the fixed signs (Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio, Taurus). Saturn will barely move between now and mid-November, meaning this wise teacher will dominate the planetary energies.

Saturn periods like this one are good times to focus on the hard things that need to be done, but are not the best times for speculation and over-idealistic thinking.

The Sun/Venus dance from Libra to Scorpio. The Sun and Venus meet in conjunction about every 9-1/2 months: once when Venus appears to be at its closest point to Earth when retrograde, and once (like now) when Venus is at its farthest point when traveling direct.  From our perspective, the Sun appears to […]

Astrological update for the week of January 3, 2022 – A bit of planetary R&R

art by Lindy Longhurst

I may have neglected to mention last week that yesterday’s Capricorn New Moon was a SuperMoon, and today here on the East Coast of the US we are enjoying the meteorological effects.  We are under a heavy influence of Saturn currently – not only do we have the waning energies of the Saturn-ruled Capricorn New Moon, but six planetary bodies are ruled by Saturn right now: Sun, Venus, Moon and Pluto in Capricorn, and Mercury in Aquarius along with Saturn itself.  Saturn demands accountability and responsibility, so even though Jupiter has entered Pisces and we all want to relax and thing everything will be blissful from now on, it might not be that easy.  In my view the best way to manage these opposing forces is to hope for and visualize the best (Jupiter in Pisces) while preparing for the worst in a disciplined fashion (Saturn).

Here’s your forecast for the week ahead. Dates and times are for the Eastern time zone, please adjust for your locality.

Monday January 3.  The energies of the Capricorn New Moon will be waning for a day or two, so this is a great time to be organized. The Moon will leave Saturn ruled Capricorn at 5:43 pm today and move into Saturn-ruled Aquarius so the six planetary bodies in Capricorn will still be in effect until Wednesday when the Moon enters Pisces.

The Moon is quite busy on Monday as it passes by Venus and Capricorn in the morning and forms a harmonious trine to Ceres in the afternoon.  Structure and functionality are the keywords for today.

Tuesday January 4.  The Aquarius Moon activates the challenging square alignment between Saturn and Uranus (the Story of 2021 as I called […]

Weekend update: The meaning of the Libra Full Moon

artist unknown

The Moon will reach its peak fullness in Libra on Sunday March 28, 2021 at 2:48 pm EDT, but its energies are powerful throughout the weekend.  This Full Moon is a SuperMoon, being at perigee or its closest point to the Earth.  There is some evidence that a Supermoon has a stronger effect on the tides and geophysical events such as storms, earthquakes and the like. Personally, I experience the Supermoons as being much more intense and I tend not to sleep under their influence.

In any case, this weekend’s Libra Full Moon coincides with the conjunction of the Sun and Venus in the sign of Aries, the opposite sign to Libra. This is what’s called the “superior” conjunction of the Sun and Venus, when Venus is at its furthest point from Earth, and it is the midpoint of the Sun/Venus cycle, just as the Full Moon is the midpoint of the Sun/Moon cycle.  There is a sense here of culmination and release in Venus-related themes: self-esteem, what we value, how we feel about our attractiveness, our ability to love, our desire to connect.  The fact that the Sun and Venus are in a tight conjunction to Chiron’s drawing out of the wounds for healing suggests a powerful opportunity to let go of destructive patterns, even if they are deeply entrenched to the point where they seem to be our very nature.

The lunar cycle is symbolic of the dance between our conscious awareness and the inner world of the emotions, a polarity which requires balance and integration just as all polarities in astrology do.  The entire wheel of the zodiac is a system of polarities, in which each pair of signs represent oppositional forces that require balance […]

3.26.21 The Sun/Venus conjunction in Aries peaks today

art by Tsuyoshi Nagano

Although the exact conjunction is today, this aspect is embedded into the chart of the Libra Full Moon on Sunday so this influence is the main focus over the next few days.  Venus is at its farthest point from Earth right now, but the Venus-ruled Libra Full Moon is a Supermoon which helps to shine her influence a little more brightly.  As I wrote yesterday, this conjunction is the midpoint of the Sun/Venus cycle and the culmination of our search for values which truly integrate with our sense of self. That is the theme of the Libra Full Moon in which the Venus-ruled Libra Moon opposes the Sun and Venus in Aries, the sign of the individual. There is a focus on our own sense of self-worth and our ability to be in relationship without losing the self – the need for balance in all things.

Today though, the Moon is in Virgo where we are more attentive to the details and making sure that everything works properly.  The Virgo Moon harmonizes in a trine to Uranus to facilitate new ways of thinking and feeling, a great benefit for the Virgo Moon which can be somewhat paralyzed in the weeds of details. A challenging square to Mars could force some kind of confrontation into the open – not a bad thing, and something which prepares us for the weekend’s lunation.

3.25.21. The meaning of the Sun/Venus conjunction

art by Daniel B. Holeman

The Sun will conjoin Venus in Aries at 2:58 am EDT on Friday March 26, but the two brilliant and bright planetary bodies have been within a degree all week.  The Sun and Venus collide about every 9-1/2 months: once when Venus appears to be at its closest point to Earth when retrograde, and once when Venus is at its farthest point when traveling direct. This is considered the midway point in the Venus/Sun cycle, equivalent to the Full Moon phase of the solilunar cycle.  From our perspective, the Sun appears to be between Venus and the Earth and there is a culmination of sorts – an awakening and illumination of the interconnectedness of all humans.

With the Sun and Venus both in Aries, the sign of the individual, this idea of interconnectedness must acknowledge the fact that we are all separate humans with our own unique viewpoints and destinies.  This in fact is the theme of the upcoming Libra Full Moon, so we will be observing these themes for much of the week.  Somehow we must find a way to achieve self-satisfaction and the thrill of our own unique adventure while at the same time bringing a sense of balance and harmony to all of our interpersonal relationships. There is also a need now to readjust and integrate our values and our own self-esteem into our conscious awareness so that we are better served by these important ideas.

Chiron conjoins the Sun and Venus this week, suggesting that there are some painful lessons that may need to be learned as we embark on this adventure.  Perhaps we lack the confidence to listen to our own inner voice and surrender too much […]
