Gender identity in the birthchart: A peek into the Aquarian Age

I’ve been listening to archived episodes of Chris Brennan’s excellent astrology podcast which has generated a lot of blog ideas.  One of the more interesting episodes was this one on sexual orientation which features astrologer Christopher Renstrom.  Chris and Christopher discuss a wide range of ideas from a historical perspective which I found very interesting since I am not that well versed in the ancient astrological works of Ptolemy and other ancient astrological history or the rules surrounding the prediction whether or not an individual was gay based on planetary configurations in their astrological chart.

Ancient astrologers such as Ptolemy were much more concerned with absolutes in prediction and description of the human experience than we are today; for example, suggesting that if Venus and Jupiter precede the Sun in a man’s chart and those two planets also aspect Mars, that man will only be interested in sex with men.  Or, if Mars and Venus in a woman’s chart are both in masculine signs (fire and air signs), she will be inclined towards lesbianism.  I haven’t done enough research to know if these rules are true, but I did look up Jodie Foster’s chart.  Ms. Foster is a noted lesbian actor whose Mars is indeed in the masculine sign of Leo, but her Venus is in the feminine sign of Scorpio.

In my experience with gay clients as well as profiles of well-known people, it seems to me that the LGBTQ experience encompasses a very wide spectrum of attributes.  There are transgendered individuals who experience themselves as having incarnated into the wrong body.  There are “gender fluid” people who are attracted to people of both sexes.  There are gay men who are more feminine than their body suggests, […]

Pallas and gender issues: The astrology of Stephen Beatty

Click chart to enlarge Click chart to enlarge

Actor Warren Beatty recently addressed his transgender son Stephen for the first time, putting Stephen in the headlines and bringing him to my attention.  For some time now I’ve been writing that the emergence of transgendered persons such as Chaz Bono into a more mainstream presence is connected with the transition into the Aquarian age.

Stephen Ira Beatty was born Kathryn Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Benning.  Stephen Ira came out as trans at the age of 14, which astrologically is the time when transiting Saturn opposes Saturn in the natal chart and often sets off a sort of identity crisis or challenge.  Stephen Ira has become an active spokesperson for the transgender community and apparently identifies as a man with feminine traits rather than a straight man.  News reports from 2012 suggest that he hesitated before completing the transition surgery because he didn’t want to give up his feminine side.

Beatty’s astrological chart is fascinating.  His Capricorn Sun gives him a desire to work hard and find success, but it is in a tight conjunction to Neptune (blurring the boundaries) which often confuses the identity when aligned with the Sun (Self) and to Uranus (shattering paradigms), the planetary ruler of the Aquarian age.  This Solar conjunction enjoys a harmonious trine from Jupiter (confidence) which no doubt has helped him to traverse the difficult waters of his complicated personal identity.

There is an indication of emotional pain in a stressful oppoStephen Beattysition between Saturn (tests and challenges) to Chiron (wounding and healing) that denotes an individual with a more intense level of emotional […]

David Bowie, magical changeling, rest in peace

12512527_1261792600501410_721398437553426693_nart found on Facebook here.  It’s hard to believe he is gone because he seemed immortal, other worldly. He wasn’t really of this earth and seemed to slide in and out of a kaleidoscope of personalities. He awakened our imaginations and expanded our consciousness in peculiar ways that no one else had done before, nor has since.  While I wasn’t particularly a fan of David Bowie’s music, I found him irresistibly fascinating and certainly a harbinger of the Aquarian Age to come.

David Bowie was born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947 in London England.  According to the source notes at Astro.com his parents provided a birth time of 9 am GMT.  This is fascinating because it places the asteroid Pallas right on the Aquarius ascendant, the point of the chart which describes the persona of the individual.  Pallas is a symbol of androgyny and as I have written before, I find it to be quite prominent in the charts of gender-fluid individuals.

Aquarius itself is ruled by Uranus (modern ruler; the traditional ruler is Saturn).  Uranus instigates radical behavior that revolutionizes the way we view our world.  The instinct for innovation and eccentricity was particularly strong in him as was the desire to continually reinvent himself.

Pallas and John Travolta news

Photo from DailyTelegraph.com.au Photo from DailyTelegraph.com/au

Homosexuality is not what it used to be.  Half a century ago, gay men and women hid their affiliation in a closely guarded cloak of secrecy.  In today’s Aquarian world where even in the US twenty states plus the District of Columbia now permit gay marriage, more and more well-known people are coming out of the closet, including even football players. But not John Travolta or Tom Cruise.  Both of these men, both Scientologists, interestingly enough, have struggled through their entire careers to keep the G word from erupting into their carefully crafted public persona.  For John Travolta, this wall between public and private will soon collapse after a judge ruled that his former pilot has the right to tell the story of their gay affair. After studying astrology for 30 years, the asteroids are finally beginning to talk to me and one of the ones who is speaking up is Pallas (sometimes also called Pallas Athena since Athena was the Greek name for the same goddess).  Pallas is often prominent in the charts of my gay clients, particularly the ones who identify as transgender.  Pallas was a female goddess, but she sprang out of the head of her father, Jupiter, so there is an asexual quality to her power.  Or more accurately, an ability to move easily between genders. In John Travolta’s chart, Pallas is exactly opposite the Sun.  This is a very powerful aspect that challenges his sense of Self (Sun).  Pallas is about six degrees away from an exact conjunction to Pluto in the chart, suggesting that there is a compulsive (Pluto) quality to this tension.  Pluto of course is also opposite the Sun, […]
