Uranus in Aries

The astrology of recent violence in France

With Uranus, planet of radical behavior and revolution, in Aries, the sign that’s ruled by the God of War (Mars), it is not surprising that there has been an increase in global violence since Uranus entered that sign in 2010.  The square from Pluto (death and destruction) in Capricorn (political and financial structures) exacerbates this even more, and we are heading into the final phase of that cycle (see the sidebar for more information if this is new to you).

In France over the past week there have been several attacks of religious extremists using terror tactics that have shaken the nation to its core.  Astrologers can explain these attacks by citing the fact that both Uranus and Pluto are in stressful aspects to the Libra Sun in France’s universally accepted 1958 chart and certainly this is true, but it is also true of the Cancer Sun in the US chart.  What is perhaps more significant is that as Saturn entered Sagittarius it triggered Mars (planet of warfare and defense) in the France chart.

With Mars in Gemini, the sign of communication, the style of the French has been to fight a war using words rather than armaments, often to the despair of other nations.   In Sagittarius, Saturn challenges all of our belief systems and this will be particularly challenging for France and other countries which attempt to hold onto their cultural identity in an age of globalization.

Pluto’s trip through Sagittarius, sign of foreign culture and travel, witnessed the relocation of millions of immigrants into France, many from north African former french colonies.  This migration helped strengthen the French economy, but also meant a growing percentage of French residents held beliefs that […]

Uranus/Pluto: The Freelance Economy

freelance economyWhen Pluto entered the sign of Capricorn in 2008, there was a huge contraction in the business world as well as a global recession, and many people lost their jobs.  Pluto creates major shifts in the affairs of the sign through which it travels, and Capricorn is the sign of the structures that create the foundation on which we live.  Corporations, governments, economic structures – all of these are under Capricorn’s domain.

In 2009, Entrepreneur magazine ran this article:

When the economic sky fell last year and CEOs and workers alike were stuffing cash under their mattresses, it didn’t seem like the right moment for big plans, much less a wholesale reshaping of the way entire industries operate. But during the last year, as the shock has subsided, Americans looking at the collapse of corporate culture and finance, the loss of job security, and inscrutable government solutions are coming to [this conclusion]: We don’t have to do things the same way. We can take the economy in hand and drive our own destinies. And a movement that has been slowly building in the business world is finally taking hold: We’re seeing the beginnings of the entrepreneurial economy, a system built on nimble, low-overhead, oftentimes small companies with fluid workforces, rather than the massive conglomerates that have upheld the economy for decades.

Where Pluto is the destroyer, tearing apart any structure that is not serving the purpose for which it was created, Uranus tends to finish the job by breaking out of old and outmoded patterns of thought and action.  When Uranus entered Aries in 2010 it began to align in a challenging square formation with Pluto (see the sidebar of this blog for more information).

Many of […]

Gun-nuttery and revolution with Uranus in Aries

Guns astrologyMore than any other sign, Aries is associated with warfare.  Ruled by the planet Mars (Mars is the Roman name for the god of war – Ares was his Greek counterpart, Aries is assertive, energetic, and generally doesn’t like to back down from a fight.  Uranus is the planet of rebellion, independence, freedom and liberation.  It’s not a surprise then that the passage of Uranus in Aries (since 2010) has brought with it a huge wave of rebellion against gun laws among gun aficionados in the United States.

As soon as Uranus moved into Aries in 2010 there was an eruption of “open carry” demonstrations throughout the US by gun rights supporters who believe that carrying guns openly is a good idea.

I predicted this before Uranus entered Aries:

It could be said that a keyword phrase for Uranus is:  “Rules?  We don’t need no stinkin’ rules.”  Uranus is all about breaking the rules – fighting for independence, the right to make one’s own decisions and not be hampered by any external force.  Aries is the sign that is ruled by Mars, the god of war.  Mars rules over guns and all other forms of weaponry and other supplies needed for warfare.  So we can just imagine that when Uranus enters Aries in May, the battle over gun control will begin to seem very important.

Under Uranus in Aries, gun rights have become synonymous with freedom, such as this article proclaims:

Chairman Mao said, “Power comes from the barrel of a gun,” which is a truism. Power is freedom or freedom is power – also a trusim. Therefore freedom comes from the barrel of a gun.

Other countries are not seeing the same kind […]

Pluto turns direct and transformation continues

personal transformationIf you feel as though your life has intensified over the past week, you are not alone.  If you open up a newspaper you will see that all over the world conflict is heating up as old failing systems begin to break down so that new paradigms can take their place. It is 2012 after all!

This is what the Uranus/Pluto cycle is all about.  Pluto tears down old and outmoded structures that are no longer working, and this is especially true when Pluto is in Capricorn as it is now.  Capricorn is the sign of the power structures, and ever since Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008 we have seen a shift in the way we look at how power is held by organizations and individuals.  Uranus, on the other hand, is about authenticity and liberation – radical change that shakes us to our very bones.  Uranus is in Aries, the sign of the individual and the warrior.  It is no wonder we are seeing the balance of power shift from the Superpower era to an era of small splinter groups that rule through intimidation and warfare.

Pluto turns direct on the 18th, meaning it will change direction after a retrograde turn that has lasted since April.  Planets don’t really orbit backwards, but because we observe the movement of the planets from our own perspective they sometimes appear to do so.  Outer planet represent transformational forces and when retrograde they tend to operate primarily on an internal level, and when Pluto turns direct (to appear to move forward again) there is a sense that the buildup of tension is released along with the transformative force that is pushing from behind.

Pluto turns direct just one day before the second exact […]

European elections and political musings

Uranus square PlutoThe phrase “May you live in interesting times” has often been identified as a “Chinese curse,” although Wikipedia debunks that notion.  But the viewpoint that interesting times could be a curse supports the idea that change, for most people, is difficult.

We are living in very interesting times indeed, and heading into times that will be even more interesting as Uranus in Aries faces off against Pluto in Capricorn in June.  If you’re new here you’ll be reading a great deal more about this aspect and I hope to be putting up a major article on the subject this week.  Capricorn represents the established structures of power, and Aries represents the urge for self-determination.  Pluto is the planet of annhilation and transformation, so while it travels through Capricorn (through 2023) there is sure to be dramatic change in political structures around the world.

That began last weekend with elections in Europe as the established order lost power in many nations and splinter groups (Uranus represents the oddball fringe elements of society among other things) gained a footing in the governmental bodies of these nations.

Capricorn can be a sign of hardship, and austerity programs throughout Europe have attempted to get a handle on the rising debt that we saw increase during Pluto’s reign in Sagittarius (the sign of expansion and optimism).

The most unnerving sign of the upcoming Uranus/Pluto square was the rise of the ultra-right wing neo-Nazi party in Greece known as Golden Dawn.  Uranus in Aries represents the revolution (Uranus) of the individual (Aries).  This is a symbol of anarchy and ultimate liberation, and as it continues to face off against the power structures (Pluto in Capricorn) over the next three years the entire global political landscape […]
