Facebook, our wired world, and Uranus at the 29th degree

virtual worldAn article in Wired online magazine entitled “Facebook’s Gone Rogue” embodies the mystical fog (Pisces) between the wired and the “real” world of information (Uranus)  that we have seen accelerate since Uranus entered Pisces in 2003.

Uranus is the planet that takes a radical departure from the conventional, but it also rules the higher mind as well as technology.  Under the influence of Uranus in Pisces the presence of the Internet has become more and more ubiquitous as the boundaries between the wired world and our brains become less distinct.  This blurring of boundaries is associated with Pisces, and Uranus is now at the very last degree of that sign, preparing to enter Aries at the end of the month.

The first smartphone was developed in 1992 and released to the public in 1993, just in time for the entry of Uranus into Pisces.  The smartphone enabled the eventual portability of the internet so that smartphone owners could stay connected virtually (no pun intended) 24/7.

Over the past couple of years, Facebook has become the primary means of blurring the distinction between online life and personal life, as well as the distinction between that which is personal and that which is private.  In its purest form, Uranus is completely transpersonal.  It has no sympathy for emotional connections or distress – it seeks a world where everything operates in perfect efficiency and reason. At this writing Facebook has over 400 million members, and claims that these members spend over 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook.  I myself can attest to this!

Addicted to technology

iphone addictionI’ve written about this before, but we have seen a huge surge of technology addiction since Uranus entered Pisces back in 2002, creating what we call a “mutual reception” with Neptune in Aquarius.  We call this “mutual reception” because Uranus is traveling through Pisces, the sign that is ruled by Neptune, and Neptune is in Aquarius, the sign that is ruled by Uranus.  This is a “double whammy” that connects the principles of Uranus and Neptune.

Uranus rules technology and anything new and unusual, along with radical change and the rational mind.  Neptune rules our experience of spirituality, the imagination and creativity, and the desire to lose the Self in something greater than ourselves.  With Neptune we can become addicted to that experience of losing ourselves, especially if it is pleasurable and helps us to forget (Neptune) our day-to-day life.  Uranus demands a constantly changing experience and becomes easily bored.

And then here comes the Iphone, a fabulous combination of beautiful design (Neptune) with the latest technology (Uranus).  I resisted the lure of the Iphone for over two years because of my dislike for the “evil empire” that Apple has become, but a couple of months ago I fell prey to its siren song of apps for everything and an enhanced experience of Life 2.0.  I carry my Iphone everywhere: I listen to podcasts in the bathroom, I read books on the Kindle app, I piddle around on the piano and the hammered dulcimer.  It really has become an extension of my life!

The return of Earth

Dharmaruci wrote a post yesterday citing my comments about the return of the outer planets to the earth element after nearly ten years, and noting the connection to the lack of achievement and accomplishment on the world stage since then:

it is no surprise, for example, that it has been impossible to establish an international agreement on the environment and climate change. The earth element is concerned with the facts on the ground (to borrow an unfortunate Israeli expression). If earth is lacking, then these facts don’t count for very much, they don’t impact. The Kyoto protocol was agreed in 1997 – the last gasp of Neptune in Capricorn – but has since proved impossible to implement.

Incredibly, in 2003 the US went to war in Iraq without a proper plan as to what to do afterwards, and without reasons that could be backed up by facts. During the 90s, with Neptune and Uranus in Capricorn, the US had been able to restrain itself.

Since 1998, we have had 2 financial bubbles: the dotcom bubble of 2000, when stocks prices in the newly established dotcom sector went way over the top, causing a hangover for the US economy . . . ; and now there has been a credit bubble, in which banks have lent huge amounts of money in irresponsible ways and passed the buck all over the world, so no-one knows who is liable; and in which consumers have also built up large amounts of debt.

The downside of earth is that the imagination can get stifled, everything becomes defined by what seem to be fixed practical limitations and traditions. This time of no earth has also been the period in which the internet […]

The astrology of viral marketing

The universe is so ingenious, which makes it difficult for astrologers to attempt to predict the future. Saturn/Neptune is famously associated with the flu and other viruses, leading many astrologers to predict a major flu outbreak under its influence beginning last summer. But no one predicted the astonishing rise of something called “viral marketing” that recently became mainstream news with the production of an anti-Hillary campaign ad that circulated like wildfire over the Internet.

The ad uses an old Apple ad where hundreds of automaton-type humans are watching a film of Hillary Clinton until a blonde ax-wielding Lara Croft wannabe throws her ax through the film screen. The ad ends with the link to Barack Obama’s website, yet Obama’s campaign had nothing to do with the ad.

Viral marketing or political advertising spreads like wildfire just as biological viruses do, and can be just as destructive. Under the Saturn/Neptune opposition Neptune’s mysterious and sometimes devious ways erode the social order of Saturn and Saturn’s restrictions and challenges exacerbate the mysterious illnesses promoted by Neptune.

Uranus in Pisces is also at play here, where information technology (Uranus) is used for purposes that transcend all known boundaries and marketers can shapeshift by wearing online disguises (Pisces). As with all things astrological, there is a higher and lower manifestation of these cycles and along with the potential deception and destruction of viral marketing-type events we also have the building of online communities that share information and transform the experience of community into something that brings knowledge and wisdom to all of us.
