Astrological advice: Understanding a son’s mental illness

art by Roberto Manoli

P writes:

My 29 year old son developed mental illness that has become worse over the years. He had suffered a severe head injury at 21 years old and then started taking hallucinogenic drugs but he was starting to change and experience minor anger and anxiety before that, around 18 years old..

I did not understand and recognize it despite my husband being diagnosed with mental illness too. I have not seen nor spoken with my son for several years as he blames us for his plight. We do financially support him (apartment, spending money) as we are so worried and heartsick. Plus, I blame myself for not thinking and acting on this sooner and beat myself up for every mistake I made as a parent.

What is the cosmic reasoning for this and what should I do?

I’m so sorry you are going through this challenge with your son. Born in 1993, he was born under the conjunction of Uranus (radical innovation) and Neptune (transcendent mysticism). Uranus rules electricity and radical behavior and is sometimes associated with mental disorders if afflicted in the natal chart.  Neptune presides over experiences that take us beyond the mundane, into spiritual bliss or addiction, and is also associated with consciousness altering substances.  My own generation (1950s) with Uranus square Neptune also sought spiritual bliss through mind expanding drugs, not always with positive consequences.

These Uranus/Neptune kids are just different. They are sometimes geniuses, usually creative, and almost never ordinary. I’m seeing them now as clients, and they are each one so unique and so talented but they don’t fit into the paradigm of the past. They don’t fit into the schools, […]

Why Miley Cyrus can’t settle down: An astrological view

Embed from Getty Images

Miley Cyrus is an interesting character to me – born during the Uranus/Neptune conjunction of the early 1990s she is extremely talented and has been a star since the age of ten.  By the age of 18 she was #13 on the Forbes celebrity list.  But her very public scandals and relationship dramas make for an interesting astrological profile as you’ll see.  She came out as “pansexual” at the age of 14 (Saturn opposition) and has been identified as straight AND gay as well as gender fluid.

After a series of relationships, Miley began dating Liam Hemsworth in 2009.  Their on again/off again relationship led to a brief engagement, a breakup, marriage, followed by divorce this year.  To be honest, this is the kind of story that made me want to start this blog – my curiosity about why people are the way they are.

The early 1990s were a time of spiritual explosion and political confusion under the influence of a conjunction of Uranus (radical change) and Neptune (spirituality and illusion).  The Celestine Prophecy was published and New Age spirituality and delusion seeped into every aspect of the culture. Cults like the Branch Davidians, subject of a standoff with the FBI, emerged.  The Heavens Gate cult committed mass suicide on their way to join a UFO.  The first baby boomer president (Bill Clinton) and the first black president of South Africa (Nelson Mandela) were elected. JK Rowling started the Harry Potter books in 1992, and Ramtha, an entity channeled by JZ Knight, appeared on the scene and was championed by Shirley McLaine along with other celebrities, began a craze of channeled entities which included Seth, Abraham, Kryon and quite a few personages from the Pleiades.

In any event, Miley Cyrus is one of these incredibly creative beings […]

Psychiatric drugs: A modern distraction

A new study out of Germany shows that only 6% of all psychiatric drugs show any added benefit (in a study which found that 58% of ALL drugs showed no added benefit).

As a child of the ’60s, it is peculiar to me that parents today are GIVING drugs to their kids. The use of drug stimulants for children exploded between 1991 and 1995, and antidepressant prescriptions nearly doubled during the same period – coinciding with the conjunction of Uranus and Neptune.  This is not surprising – Uranus rules electricity and radical behavior and is sometimes associated with mental disorders if afflicted in the natal chart.  Neptune presides over experiences that take us beyond the mundane, into spiritual bliss or addiction, and is also associated with consciousness altering substances.  By 2014, 7% of all children between age 6 and 17 were taking some sort of psychiatric drug, mostly for ADHD.  More than twice as many boys were prescribed as girls – not surprising since boys are often more active than girls.

I have no wish to minimize the danger of true psychiatric disorders which require ongoing medication such as bipolar or psychotic episodes, or a serious depression or panic disorder which requires short-term medication to help the patient move through a difficult time. But I am concerned about our tendency in the modern world to avoid our own emotions and medicate our children into subservience.

The astrological birthchart identifies certain predispositions in our personality and emotional makeup. Acting as a map, the birthchart identifies our strength and challenges, and shows the way to navigate through our difficulties. Often situations that we find devastating later bring us great joy and wisdom that we would never have gained […]

The seeds of the Capricorn stellium are blooming now

Capricorn stelliumSteven Forrest has posted a lovely video discussing the travel of Uranus, Neptune and Saturn through Capricorn in the 1980s and 1990s and you can watch it here.  Steven was my first teacher and I respect him greatly – his books The Inner Sky and The Changing Sky are required reading for beginners and really, for anyone who hasn’t read them.

In the video Steven discusses the humans that were born when Uranus and Neptune were in Capricorn during this period as being seeds of humanity that are about to flower now that Saturn and Pluto are both in Capricorn.

About Capricorn

Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac, and associated with the tenth house of achievement in the material world.  Under the influence of Capricorn we tend to be more serious, perhaps more introverted.  Life can seem like a hard slog as we do The Things Which Must Be Done, and we might sometimes forget why we’re even doing them.  But the symbol for Capricorn, as well as its ruling planet Saturn, is the sure-footed mountain goat which climbs ridiculous peaks without stumbling or falling, always achieving its goals.

The conjunction of Uranus and Neptune

The Uranus/Neptune conjunction of the 1990s was an extremely significant period.  Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) are transformational forces and they generally apply a great deal of pressure on the human experience when they are in alignment with each other.  Uranus inspires us to revolt and rebel against a stale and outmoded status quo and Neptune inspires us to transcend the material world to find bliss and an experience of the divine.  When these two aligned in the early 1990s there was […]

Gender identity in the birthchart: A peek into the Aquarian Age

I’ve been listening to archived episodes of Chris Brennan’s excellent astrology podcast which has generated a lot of blog ideas.  One of the more interesting episodes was this one on sexual orientation which features astrologer Christopher Renstrom.  Chris and Christopher discuss a wide range of ideas from a historical perspective which I found very interesting since I am not that well versed in the ancient astrological works of Ptolemy and other ancient astrological history or the rules surrounding the prediction whether or not an individual was gay based on planetary configurations in their astrological chart.

Ancient astrologers such as Ptolemy were much more concerned with absolutes in prediction and description of the human experience than we are today; for example, suggesting that if Venus and Jupiter precede the Sun in a man’s chart and those two planets also aspect Mars, that man will only be interested in sex with men.  Or, if Mars and Venus in a woman’s chart are both in masculine signs (fire and air signs), she will be inclined towards lesbianism.  I haven’t done enough research to know if these rules are true, but I did look up Jodie Foster’s chart.  Ms. Foster is a noted lesbian actor whose Mars is indeed in the masculine sign of Leo, but her Venus is in the feminine sign of Scorpio.

In my experience with gay clients as well as profiles of well-known people, it seems to me that the LGBTQ experience encompasses a very wide spectrum of attributes.  There are transgendered individuals who experience themselves as having incarnated into the wrong body.  There are “gender fluid” people who are attracted to people of both sexes.  There are gay men who are more feminine than their body suggests, […]
