The trouble with Demi Moore

Demi Moore astrologyThe troubled actress Demi Moore has been in the news lately after she was hospitalized for what appears to be a combination of prescription drugs, nitrous oxide and alcohol.  While her behavior has been more erratic since her separation from third husband Ashton Kutcher, Demi has a long history of emotional problems and drug addiction that nearly caused her firing from St. Elmo’s Fire, the film that brought her to national attention.

Demi’s astrological chart has some of the classic hallmarks of addictive behavior:  Pisces rising, Sun conjunct Neptune, Jupiter and Chiron in the 12th house.  (Source of birth data: Astrotheme)  Pisces, Neptune and the 12th house are all related and share the quality of an urge to transcend the material world.  This can occur through spiritual ascension, through romance, through art – or it can occur through addictions to love, alcohol and drugs.

Demi’s childhood was no picnic – after her father abandoned the family her mother became an alcoholic and married  an alcoholic who was unable to keep down a job.  The family moved 30-40 times while Demi was a child and the stepfather committed suicide when Demi was 15.  She was born in 1962 when Uranus and Pluto were nearing their exact conjunction, and everyone born between 1962 and 1968 carries this dramatic combination of radical change (Uranus) and total transformation (Pluto) in their charts.

Between 1962 and 1965, Saturn (challenge and self-doubt) and Chiron (emotional wounding) were opposite the Uranus/Pluto pair – a difficult planetary system that generally comes with an extremely sensitive psycho/emotional system that is can easily become imbalanced if not consciously attended to.  Often these individuals carry a great deal of psychic pain, but if they do the hard work of […]

In the news: Zecharia Sitchin and Charlie Sheen

Zecharia Sitchin has died

Zecharia SitchinI just discovered that Zecharia Sitchin died on October 9th.  Sitchin was the author of many books translating ancient Sumerian texts which appeared to describe the settlement of Earth by ancient astronauts.  Though ridiculed by many, Sitchin’s work has been extremely influential.  Sitchin, aged 90, would have experienced his “Pluto opposition” this year, a time when Pluto in the sky opposes Pluto in the chart.

Sitchin, with the Sun in Cancer (born July 11, 1920, time unknown, Azerbaijan), had a triple conjunction of Mercury, Neptune and Jupiter, all in Leo.  Mercury in Leo can be forceful with one’s opinions and doesn’t back down easily when crossed, although his Cancerian Sun and Venus would have been more sensitive to the huge amount of criticism he received.  The combination of Mercury and Neptune is extremely imaginative and has a facility with languages, and the addition of Jupiter helps to expand the imagination and encourage “out of the box” thinking.

Sitchin was an important influence for those of us who seek to understand our world on a more complex level than the superficial, and he will be missed.

Charlie Sheen found “frothing” at the Plaza

Actor Charlie Sheen is a frequent favorite of tabloid journalism.  Accused of beating up ex-wife Denise Richards, accused of threatening soon-to-be ex-wife Brooke Sheen with a knife, and yesterday reports emerged that Sheen was rushed to the hospital in the early hours of the morning after Plaza hotel staff in New York  found him drunk and disorderly, yelling and damaging $7,000 worth of hotel furnishings.

Sheen is a great example of why we should never look at just Sun Signs in astrology.  Sheen is […]

Chiron in Pisces: The bliss of healing

Chiron in PiscesChiron moves into the sign of Pisces today.  Chiron is an interesting planetary body whose orbit lies in the Kuiper belt.  But just as Chiron was not an ordinary Centaur even though he was half horse and half man, Chiron is not just an ordinary KBO (Kuiper Belt Object).  For more information on the planetary properties of Chiron visit this earlier article, and here you’ll find more information on the astrological Chiron.

Today Chiron leaves Aquarius for the sign of Pisces.  In its role as the Wounded Healer, Chiron shows where are deepest wounds lie, and where we will find the keys to healing.  A soul that has experienced the intensity of experience in emotional or physical pain has an opportunity to gain greater wisdom and a depth of consciousness and awareness by delving deep into the wound that is not available without these experiences.

Chiron is the guide on this journey, giving us the courage to open our hearts despite the fear and pain that may make this process excrutiatingly difficult in some cases.

While Chiron was in Aquarius from 2005 until next year (Chiron will retrograde back into Aquarius in July to complete the process) we have seen the ways in which technology, one of the domains of Aquarius, has created wounds and intensified experiences of loneliness and isolation in the midst of 1,000 Facebook friends.  Aquarius, with its double rulership of Saturn (rules and isolation) and Uranus (the collective) has a tendency to become somewhat disconnected from the heart and soul, living primarily in the head and the realm of thoughts and ideas.

The period of Chiron traveling through Aquarius completes itself with […]

The astrology of depression: Andrew Koenig

photo montage from CNN. Andrew Koenig, the son of Walter Koenig who played Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, has been missing since February 14th.  He was last seen at a bakery in Vancouver.  Koenig is an actor who is best known as Kirk Cameron’s sidekick in the long-running television series “Growing Pains.”  Some of Koenig’s friends fear the worst, reporting that he had been depressed and fed up with his life in California. He sold all of his possessions and walked away from his home in Venice on February 4.

Koenig (8/17/1968, time unknown, LA CA)  is 41, the age at which transiting Uranus opposes Uranus in the birthchart, and because he is one of those “Uranus/Pluto” people who were born between 1962 and 1968, that Uranus opposition is particularly intense.  Briefly, Uranus is the planet of rebellion and revolutionary change, and Pluto, the planet of death and rebirth, presides over experiences that transform us from the ground up.  This cohort of people carry this archetype of revolutionary change within them.

The Uranus Opposition is a planetary cycle in which Uranus in the sky opposes Uranus in the birthchart.  It occurs at age 40-42, and is the most intense of the “midlife crisis” transits, generating an urge to break free of whatever is holding us back.  For this age group, because Uranus opposes not only natal Uranus but also natal Pluto, this time period is even more urgent and powerful and necessitates a letting go of the past in order to move forward into the future.

Pluto squares his Moon, or his emotions, and Andrew’s former landlord told TMZ that Andrew did not have a good relationship with his mother (the Moon often, but […]

The death of Christopher Bowman

Christopher Bowman was the man’s man of figure skating who died last week at the age of 40 in a cheap motel room from mysterious causes. An unidentified male friend shared his motel room and was with him the night he died. He was destitute and recently divorced, living out of his car and struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. He was on probation with the City of Los Angeles for receiving stolen property.

Bowman often recounted that he started skating at age five because he was an overactive child, and in his heyday was celebrated for his manly performance on the ice, a relative rarity in that business. He was known not only for his talent, but also for his charisma and a wild streak that could not be tamed.

Bowman’s astrology chart shows that he had the Sun in Aries, the sign of the warrior and adventurer, reflecting his willingness to be a maverick and live on the edge. However, the planet Saturn conjoined that Aries Sun, applying pressure on him throughout his life and a sense that he was never good enough. That Sun/Saturn conjunction is difficult to live with but in an individual who is willing to work hard it can bring tremendous strength of character in one’s later life.

However, the persistent sense of inadequacy that Saturn can apply can also cause depression and isolation that drives some people to drown their sorrow in drugs and alcohol. Bowman’s coach Frank Carroll reported that although Bowman had great talent, he was untrainable and uncoachable and lacked the discipline to improve his skills. Instead he relied on instinct and charisma which sadly, did not go far enough.

Like everyone born in the mid-1960s, Bowman’s chart shows a conjunction of Uranus and Pluto, the planetary combination that brought […]
