US astrological chart

Happy Birthday USA 2018 edition

Like human beings, nations and entities also have astrological charts and a look at the planetary cycles affecting nations can tell us a great deal about what is in store.  Personal request from me: Political posts can generate nastiness.  Please keep all comments productive and astrological.

Pluto

Geeky astrological detail:  I use the Sibley chart for the US and here’s why.)  One of the most critical astrological events coming up for the United States is the return of Pluto to its placement in the natal chart for the country, something we call the “Pluto Return.”  Pluto returns are very rare since they happen only every 248 years and very few governments last through their Pluto returns, although there are exceptions such as the Roman Empire.   Pluto cycles of all kinds tend to be associated with destruction and regeneration, and I don’t think there is any doubt that we are seeing the unraveling of the American structures of government.  This unraveling began during the economic collapse when Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008, followed by the turmoil of the challenging Uranus/Pluto square between 2010 and 2017 and has affected the global system as a whole, but this Pluto return will be America’s alone.

One interesting fact about Pluto in the US chart is that 1957 was a pivotal point for America’s Pluto (geeky astrological detail: Pluto is retrograde in the US chart and progressed Pluto re-aligned with natal Pluto in 1957).  1957 marked the enactment of the Civil Rights Act which began the transformation (Pluto) of the integration of African Americans into mainstream American society.  (This was also the year that the Soviet Union launched their Sputnik, beginning the space race, and the beginning of the […]

An astrological look at the US economy

financial astrologyA dear friend of mine, who shall remain nameless but I’m sure she’s not alone, been frightened by the dire predictions of another astrologer friend of hers who has predicted that the US economy will collapse in 2014 and 2015.  Contrarian that I am, I have a different view.

Yesterday’s post looked back at 2010 to see how we got to the place where we currently find ourselves.  Economists say now that we entered the global recession in December 2007 which was just before Pluto entered Capricorn in January 2008, and that the global recession actually ended in June of 2009.  The summer of 2009 may have been the trough, but it took several years to pull our way out of the recession and growth is only now just beginning to occur.

Pluto’s entry into Capricorn created the contraction that ended the previous riot of expansion that occurred when Pluto moved through Sagittarius, and once Uranus began aspecting Pluto in 2011 the world began to recover of the shock of the global collapse and begin the process of looking with new eyes (Uranus) towards rebuilding and transformation (Pluto).  By the time the square between Uranus and Pluto began in 2012, the economy was well on its way to recovery.

During this time the US has been particularly hard-hit.  Partly this is because with Sagittarius rising in the Sibley chart that is commonly used for the US, Americans tend to be overly optimistic in general, and consequently were very susceptible to the absolute faith (another hallmark of Sagittarius) that was required for the giant balloon that was the pre-2008 economy.  (Read more about America’s love of money in my earlier post here.)

I’m not sure why my friend’s financial […]

“We are living in the era of the upstart”

All over the United States an anti-Washington fervor is throwing incumbents out of Congress in favor of unknown candidates with no ties to party machinery.

Barack Obama won the presidency in November of 2008, the day of the first opposition between Saturn and Uranus.  Saturn represents conventional thinking and structures; Uranus represents the breaking apart of the old order in favor of something as yet unknown.  At the time astrologers wondered, who would win, Saturn or Uranus?

This opposition between Saturn and Uranus has occurred in five phases with the fourth phase just a few weeks ago, and it affects the United States directly because the whole Cardinal Grand Cross we’ve been talking about aspects the Midheaven in the (Sibley) chart for the United States.  The Midheaven of a national chart represents that nation’s government and its standing in the world.  The US Midheaven has been under pressure since Pluto formed a challenging square to that point shortly after entering the sign of Capricorn which is associated with government structures.  Saturn followed shortly behind, and there’s no doubt that the US government has been in a period of great transformation.

At the same time Chiron and Neptune, transiting through the sky, have been passing back and forth over the US Moon (signifying the mood of the people).  Chiron has been bringing up all of our anxieties, and Neptune has been instilling a longing for something more true and more pure.

All of this is very visible in the changing American political landscape.  No longer are there two political parties with established platforms and party bosses who call the shots.  Not only is there divisiveness now between the parties, the divisiveness has penetrated within the parties.   On the right the Tea Parties have become a political force to be recognized […]

The Astrological State of the Union 2009

President Obama gave what was effectively his first State of the Union address last night when he addressed a joint session of Congress for the first time.  The timing of the address is significant because planets in the astrological chart for the United States were being activated by the New Moon which occurred at 8:35 pm, shortly after President Obama began his address.

The New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon conjunct in the sky.  There is a fusion of the conscious mind (Sun) and the subconscious instincts (Moon), and New Moons are therefore said to be good times for new beginnings.

Countries have birthcharts just like people do, and we call the study of places and events “mundane” astrology, after the Latin word “mundo” which means “world.”  The astrological chart for the United States (astrologers, I use the Sibley chart for reasons discussed here) contains a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter (the two benefics, or fortunate planets) to the Sun (the Spirit of the country) in the seventh house of partnership which signifies a strong sense of optimism and desire to form positive alliances.  This combination of beneficial influences, combined with an expansive and optimistic Sagittarius ascendant, bestows the idealism for which the United States is known.

However, the restrictive planet Saturn forms a square (a challenging aspect) to the Sun, suggesting periods of deflation will be required when the idealism and expansiveness becomes too great.  Hence we find periods of extreme economic boom times, followed by panic and deflation (more on this in a later post).

Last night’s New Moon formed a trine to that Seventh House Venus and Jupiter in the US chart, activating the desire to come together and feel optimistic again about the direction the country […]
