Sunday inspiration: The battle for the soul of America

In looking at the chart for Inauguration Day I thought I would take a look at the minor asteroids, some of the 10,000 named asteroids that hold a place in our solar system.  Lo and behold, I discovered that in the astrology chart for the United States, the Moon (soul) is in a harmonious trine to the asteroid America, and Pluto (creative destruction and transformation) forms a challenging square to the asteroid America.  The Moon, in idealistic Aquarius in the US chart, is itself in a semisextile aspect to Pluto, denoting the awkward and uncomfortable connection of the soul of the country (Moon) to the dark side of its history (Pluto) – the conflict between the ideals of its founding and the brutal realities of its relentless push for expansion (Sagittarius ascendant) and prosperity (Pluto in the 2nd house) which resulted in genocide of the native peoples and enslavement of Africans.  And with the US Pluto return approaching, Pluto will once again set off that awkward semisextile to the Moon and square the asteroid America, forcing the country to confront the question of what is this country all about.  What is America?

America is pretty unique in that there really is no cohesive idea of what America is, other than a nebulous idea of freedom and liberty which is in the Declaration of Independence.  Apparently from the inception of the government there was debate about how the country was to be run – as a federation of states? The 2020 Solar Return of the US – aka Happy July 4th

us-solar-return We celebrate July 4th as the birthday of the United States, and most astrologers use the Sibly chart for the astrological symbology of the United States (here’s why I use it).  I thought it might be a good time to look at the current astrological forces affecting the United States right now in the midst of a global pandemic. Please note: In writing posts which may have a political bent I try to be as neutral as possible and simply report on the astrology.  However, occasionally my bias may seep through.  I have no wish to censor the comments, but any comments that serve no purpose other than to inflame WILL be deleted. 

As you may know if you’ve been reading this blog, or other articles about the astrology of the US, we are heading into a return of Pluto to its position in the US chart.  Pluto, being the Lord of the Underworld and all, is not a gentle giant.  He has a powerful impact through destruction of the darkness which eventually allows for illumination.  But in the process, we sometimes must go through that Dark Night of the Soul before we can get to the light.

A bit of history

Guns, Guns, Guns, in the USA

guns astrologyEverywhere you turn these days the discussion is about guns.

Guns are not a new topic for discussion, but the feverish frenzy over which gun rights advocates are protecting their rights to own assault weapons and other types of weapons meant for mass killings is rather recent.

There is no nation like the United States in terms of gun ownership.  The (Sibly) chart of the United States has Sagittarius rising, which echoes the expansive philosophies that have always drove the country towards constant expansion and religious ideals, both Sagittarian concepts.  We normally would look towards Mars for signs of warfare like behavior, but in the US chart the passion for guns is found in the placement of Pluto in the second house.  This fanatacisim about guns originates not in an aggressive desire to assert force (Mars) but in a hunger for freedom (Sagittarius ascendant) and a relentless (Pluto) drive to accumulate masses of money through manipulation of the nation’s ideals (second house).

American gun lovers don’t want to accumulate stockpiles of weapons to kill their neighbors.  They want these weapons because they believe that it will protect that Sagittarius rising freedom.  It doesn’t hurt that Uranus (planet of liberation from oppression) conjoins both Venus (partners) and Mars (aggression) in the chart.  That Uranus/Mars conjunction especially denotes a radical desire for liberty at all costs.  Americans own twice as many guns as any other country, per capita.

The arrest of George Zimmerman and the healing of wounds in the US Sibly chart

Trayvon martin astrologyThe shooting of Trayvon Martin has made national headlines in the United States and in a country that likes to think of itself as being “beyond race” this story has brought the matter of racial bias and injustice to the front page of American news.

George Zimmerman was arrested yesterday just as Mars, planet of aggressive force, changed direction to turn direct.  Because this case has had so much impact on the American discussion I wanted to see if there were any significant connections between the charts of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin and the generally accepted chart for the US, the Sagittarius rising “Sibly” chart.

In order to assess the effect these individuals are having on the evolution of the United States I examined the progressed charts for all of the players using the information available  without accurate birth times.  Trayvon Martin’s progressed Saturn was exactly quincunx the progressed Moon in the US chart, demonstrating the challenge (Saturn)  to the emotions (Moon) of Americans in a struggle that, like the quincunx aspect, has no real way of achieving resolution. Both progressed Mars and Jupiter in Trayvon’s chart are trine Progressed Chiron in the US chart, motivating the desire (Mars) to raise up painful old wounds (Chiron) so that they can be healed and some meaning (Jupiter) found from the situation.  And Trayvon’s progressed Neptune, illusion and mystery, conjoins the US progressed South Node (karmic matters), with his progressed Uranus (shocking events) sitting right on the US Pluto (revelation of secrets and the principle of destruction).
