The astrology of Roe v. Wade: The Pluto connection

Surprising no one, the US Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade today. The Roe v. Wade decision granted a constitutional right to an abortion and has been controversial since it was declared on January 22, 1973. (Note: I am not by any means pro-abortion. The whole idea makes me very squeamish. But I do believe that we have an inalienable right to control own bodies, and that makes me against this decision.)

The Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade began with a lawsuit that was filed in March of 1970 as part of a general plan to legalize abortion. The actual plaintiff in the case, later named as Norma McCorvey, was later revealed to be a relatively uneducated young woman who was solicited by attorney Sarah Weddington for her test case on abortion rights.

At the time, the progressed (Sibley) chart for the United States had some interesting alignments involving Pluto, the planet of power and transformation by creative destruction and regeneration.  Pluto sits in the second house of money and values in the US chart, describing the connection between money and power in this country (read more about that here).

  • Pluto, which is retrograde in the US chart, turned direct in 1871 just after the Civil War. The significance of this shift cannot be overstated – a progressed planet changing direction denotes a major change, and when that planet is Pluto the change is seismic. (Note:  There are many different astrological charts for the United States and lots of arguments among astrologers about which ones is correct.  I use the Sibley chart with Sagittarius rising, and here’s why. )

The Solar Return chart is a chart that is cast for the exact moment the Sun in the sky returns to the same degree as the natal chart.  Many astrologers use the Solar Return chart to forecast the details of the next twelve months in an individual’s life – I don’t care to use it for that purpose because I believe that we have a great deal of free choice and I prefer to encourage my clients to learn to trust their inner voice and not depend on what they are told by astrologers.  If there is a chance of a hurricane you will probably not cancel your vacation – you will hope for the best and go on your vacation, and then if that hurricane does come you can always change your plans.  But it’s helpful to know that there is a chance of a storm so you can make a contingency plan.

The chart for the USA Solar Return is a challenging one with a Grand Cross in cardinal planets lining up the Moon in Libra in opposition to Uranus in Aries,  squaring the Sun in Cancer opposing Pluto in Capricorn.  A Grand Cross creates tremendous tension that culminates in a crisis of release and ultimate transformation, and the presence of a Grand Cross in a Solar Return chart suggests that there will almost certainly be a major shift in governmental forces and political alignments in 2014.
