Venus in Aries

The astrology of Alexander McQueen

I just watched the documentary McQueen about fashion designer Alexander McQueen on Netflix and was struck by both his exceptional genius and his turbulent personal life and apparently fragile psyche.

McQueen was born on March 17, 1969.  (Geeky astrological details: Astro.com has provided a birth time of 10:45 am but this is not an accurate birth time – apparently his mother is quoted as having said his time of birth was sometime between 9:30 and midnight.  The ascendant is the most visible piece of an astrological chart since it reflects the persona and the style of living.  9:30 pm puts Libra on the ascendant which doesn’t really makes sense with the penchant McQueen seemed to have for digging up the dark underbelly of the psyche and expressing it through fashion.  That is much more Scorpionic which would be reflected by a later birth time.  A Libra ascendant would have been much more driven towards creating beautiful and harmonious art whereas McQueen sought to horrify and disquiet his audience. “I use things that people want to hide in their heads. War, religion, sex; things we all think about, but don’t bring to the forefront. But I do and I force them to watch it.”)

In any case, McQueen was born under the Pisces Sun, and his Moon was also in Pisces.  This was not a New Moon since the Moon was slightly behind the Sun where it is in the balsamic, or Dark Moon phase – a closing of the karmic cycle that requires lessons to be learned and a type of completion.  That this path was to be a difficult one is shown by the exact opposition of Pluto, planet of power […]

Venus turns retrograde March 4, 2017 – what does this mean for you?

Art by Immortalized Kaos Art by Immortalized Kaos

Venus usually slips through our lives like a whisper, and we barely experience her transits.  Her influence is usually soft and encouraging and I often say that we only really take notice when we experience discomfort of some kind.  Even the challenging transits of Venus are benign, offering us only an opportunity to indulge in greater indulgence.

Venus is famous for her influence on relationships.  As the goddess of love and beauty, she bestows an attractive power and grace, but that attractive power draws more than love.  It can also be a magnet for financial wealth and personal possessions so in that way, Venus is said to rule our values and the things that we love as well as the people. Venus also rules our ability to love and relate to our self, and the kind of talents and personal resources that we possess as well as the material possessions.

Venus is in Aries now, where she is more of a Warrior Queen than a cartoon sex goddess.  This befits her divine lineage, since the archetype of Venus descends from Ishtar, Inanna, Astarte – the goddesses of war and power as well as sex and love.  When Venus in Aries turns retrograde, she has some scores to settle.  Relationships from the past can be healed or resolved now, but confrontations may occur.  This is not a warm and fuzzy Venus retrograde in which we find our old friends on Facebook, but we can find real resolution here and true transformation of weak links in our links to those around us.  Venus retrograde periods are not ideal for beginning new relationships since we are looking back into the past rather than thinking […]

Libra Full Moon, March 27 2013: Finding balance in chaos

Full Moons are all about balancing polar opposites since during the Full Moon the Sun is in the sign opposing the sign the Moon is in.  The polarities of the zodiac are oppositional in nature but some of the polarities are more oppositional than others.  Taurus and Scorpio both are sensual and stubborn.  Gemini and Sagittarius both hunger for knowledge.

In the Libra Full Moon the Sun is in Aries, and this time around the Sun has a lot of company in a tight Aries stellium which includes Venus, Sun, Uranus and Mars.  Aries is ruled by Mars, so the fact that Mars is in Aries is itself a “double whammy” which exponentially increases the aggressive fire and force of the Aries influence.  Mars and Aries are self-initiatory – at their best they inspire, motivate and create a force that is unstoppable.  If thwarted, diminished or blocked they evoke rage and a rebellious fervor that is particularly strong now since Mars itself is conjunct Uranus, the very planet of revolution.

And yet the Full Moon is in Libra and our hearts are longing for peace and harmonious connection with others.  The Libra Moon, which is much more polite and tends to withdraw from conflict. Libra is the sign of balance in any case – striving for balance in a polarized world. In this lunation, where the force of Libra’s opposite polarity, Aries, is so powerful, that balance will be much harder to achieve. But achieve balance we must – that is the lesson of the Libra Full Moon.

At its core, the Aries/Libra polarity teaches us to integrate our need for individuality (Aries) with our need for beautiful connections that inspire noble truths (Libra).  This polarity is made even […]

Here’s something to perk up your day!

Venus conjunct UranusEvery page is a new beginning.

Venus conjoins Uranus today, and since both are in Aries it’s gonna be a hot time in the old town tonight, if you heed the siren song of Venus, the planet of love and connection, hooking up with the iconoclast and rebellious Uranus.  And with both in Aries, the potential for fireworks is high!

Jeff and Michelle are having a fascinating discussion over at the Sasstrology site.  Uranus can bring sudden changes of fortune, and with Venus approaching Uranus this could mean sudden changes in our interpersonal relationships. Let’s listen in:

Michelle: They’re paired up in the sign of Aries, which is all about a new beginning. But Uranus can sometimes be about separation. So when we get Venus conjunct Uranus in Aries, it really begs the question, is it the beginning or the end? The answer to that isn’t immediately apparent, because Venus has just come out of Pisces, which is affiliated with endings, and then we’ve got the contrast with Aries (new beginnings), and then we have this unpredictable element provided by Uranus, which is associated with surprising plot twists. So this could signify a surprise beginning of a relationship; somebody brand new pops into the scene out of seemingly nowhere, but it could also signify separation. And again, that really depends on the strength and the quality of the relationship that you’re talking about.

Jeffrey: And sometimes a beginning brings on an ending. Venus is, among other things, the planet of love and relationships and romance. You may suddenly meet someone new, which—if you’re already in a relationship—could precipitate an ending. So one thing I would advise—especially because this combination is happening in impulsive Aries—is to look […]

Venus in Aries

Image from Bella Online, source unknown.

Lovely Venus has entered the sign of her warrior lover Ares, leaving the misty realms of love and universal compassion for the battleground. Venus in Aries seeks the courage to stand up for ourselves and achieve our own needs, even while in relationship with others. In Aries, Venus establishes solid boundaries and defends them well.

Venus shows our tastes and aesthetics as well as our sense of values, and in Aries we value strength and honor. At its best, Aries is the knight of the age of chivalry, brave and true to god and country. At its worst, Aries becomes the wanton god of war, filled with bloodlust and a ruthless desire for pleasure with no heed to its cost.

As Venus travels through Aries for the next few weeks, it makes only harmonious aspects to other planets, bringing out the best in this combination. Venus will sextile Chiron on March 3 and will trine Saturn on March 9 with a sextile to Neptune the next day. The influence of Venus on the opposition between Saturn and Neptune will have a softening influence on that difficult dynamic, and perhaps an additional fluidity in the resolution of issues that have come to a head as Saturn’s reality check confronts Neptune’s fantasies.
