Venus in Capricorn

Belated astrological update for January 26-30, 2022: Mercury rx into Capricorn and Venus turns direct

artist unknown

Sorry for the delay of this post – I was out of town and overestimated my ability to post while on vacation. Here are a few important things to know about the astrology of the week:

Venus turns direct in the wee hours of the morning (EST) on January 29th after its retrograde travel, which means it’s stationary in the skies right now. This Venus retrograde cycle has not been kind to the financial markets which are ruled by Venus, especially with the conjunction from Venus to Pluto, but hopefully that will begin to change as Venus picks up speed again and finishes her journey through Capricorn.  (Venus does make one final conjunction to Pluto on March 3rd and Mars will be involved in that drama as well but we have time to prepare for that!)

Mercury has retrograded back into Capricorn now, and with Mars newly in Capricorn we are back to six planets in Saturn-ruled signs (four in Capricorn and two in Aquarius). When we are in the realm of Saturn responsibility and discipline are of critical importance.  We might be tempted to let Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces lull us into a sense that everything is beautiful in its own way (hmmm, I hear a song coming on!!) – but Saturn-ruled signs require more of a feet-on-the-ground approach.  Capricorn is solely ruled by Capricorn and is the fullest expression of the Saturnian pressure to succeed through hard work and focused goals, whereas Aquarius is affected by the transformational rulership of Uranus which retains the Saturnian seriousness and drive, but adds a Uranian layer that inspires us to break out of ruts that offer no way to change and evolve.

In any case, Saturn is the boss […]

The meaning of Venus retrograde in Capricorn, 2021-2022

art by Emily Balivet

Venus usually slips through our lives like a whisper, and we barely experience her transits.  Her influence is usually soft and encouraging and I often say that we only really take notice when we experience discomfort of some kind.  Even the challenging transits of Venus are benign, offering us only an opportunity to indulge in greater indulgence.  Venus is currently at the end of Capricorn and has been in a challenging conjunction to Pluto for the past week or so.  In Capricorn, everything we do takes on a more somber flavor and when we’re talking about Venus that includes our approach to aesthetics and everything we hold dear in addition to relationships.  As the goddess of love and beauty, she bestows an attractive power and grace, but that attractive power draws more than love.  It can also be a magnet for financial wealth and personal possessions so in that way, Venus is said to rule our values and the things that we love as well as the people. Venus also rules our ability to love and relate to our self, and the kind of talents and personal resources that we possess as well as the material possessions.

Venus turns retrograde every 18 months or so and over time it forms a beautiful pentagram design like an unfolding rose.  Astrologer David Crook explains:  “Venus orbits the sun once every 224.7 days, while the Earth every 365.25 days. The ratio of these two periods is 0.615, or about 8 to 13. Since the difference between 8 & 13 is 5, the path of Venus has a five-fold symmetry relative to Earth = The Rose of […]

The astrology of the week of November 1, 2021: It’s all about Scorpio

This week we have a New Moon in Scorpio, and it’s a SuperMoon, Mars has just entered Scorpio, the Sun is already in Scorpio, and Mercury moves into Scorpio this week.  Under the influence of Scorpio there is nowhere to hide: life becomes a deep dive into the most intense search for meaning we can imagine.

In addition, the challenging square between Saturn and Uranus, the story of 2021 over control vs liberty, is activated by Mars this month, but that activation actually begins this week with the Scorpio New Moon triggering first Saturn and then Uranus. These themes of repression and rebellion are evident on the world stage but they may also be present in our own lives as we struggle to find a way to live an authentic and joyful life in a pandemic world. How much freedom are we willing to give up for our security and the health of others?  How much control can we really have in a world full of unexpected consequences? These are the questions being asked during this Saturn/Uranus time which began earlier in 2021 and is coming to a conclusion in December (mostly, that is – Saturn and Uranus will continue to do a dance into 2022 but it will be much weaker).

Those are the important things…let’s take a look at the week ahead. Dates and times are for the Eastern time zone, please adjust for your locality.

Monday November 1.  As the Moon completes her passage through Virgo, we are more easily able to process the details of life and digest them into meaningful and practical pieces. Mercury is in a harmonious trine to Jupiter, expanding our views of what is […]

1.8.21. Multiple planetary shifts today to break up stuck energies

artist unknown

When we live in challenging times, it’s easy to become bogged down in apprehension and uncertainty about the future.  This week we have three planets changing signs: Mars entered Taurus on the 6th, and today we have Venus entering Capricorn which will solidify and ground our relationships and interactions with others, and Mercury shifting into Aquarius.  I’m particularly excited about Mercury, planet of the mind and communication, entering Aquarius where it will be until mid-March, working with both Saturn and Jupiter to help us re-define our vision of the future.  Today, though, Mercury will form a challenging square to Mars (aggression) which could lead to some volatile rhetoric and arguments if we allow the stress to build and emerge in unpleasant ways.

This Mercury/Mars alignment does lend force to our thoughts and ability to communicate them, so if we stay grounded and centered we can put this passionate energy to work for us today.  A beautiful sextile from the Sun to Neptune can help us to use the fire of thought and messaging (Mercury/Mars) through creative imagination and heightened intuition.  Magick is created through the force of Will, and that is the power of Mars and not to be feared. ❤️

Planetary news this week! Sagittarius New Moon, Venus in Capricorn and Neptune Direct

Deviant Art

The Sagittarius New Moon occurs on November 26th marking the beginning of Sagittarius season.  Sagittarius times tend to be more lighthearted and hopeful than periods dominated by, say, Scorpio, which we have been going through over the past few weeks.  Two planets still linger in Scorpio, but the New Moon in Sagittarius offers an illumination into the ideal of hope and a belief that we can indeed find meaning in our lives that brings a sense of peace and fulfillment.

This New Moon is harmonized by a trine from Chiron, which helps to soften the rough edges and facilitate the healing of any old wounds that linger in the psyche.  However, an awkward inconjunct* from the New Moon to Uranus suggests that there is a pressure to break away from old patterns and begin something new, although we may not yet be aware of what that ought to be.  Often the 30 degree and 150 degree angles plant seeds of irritation and restlessness that are fulfilled when a stronger planetary cycle comes along.

The energies of the New Moon begin a few days away from the actual alignment, so we are in the shadow already of this New Moon.  This is the perfect time to seek an adventure, either in the mind or an actual adventure in the physical world.  Under the influence of the Sagittarius New Moon we are encouraged to open up to ever greater possibilities and never to settle for a limited or safe alternative.

Venus enters Capricorn on November 25th, and for a few weeks our relationships with others taken on a more sober flavor.  After a few weeks in Sagittarius, Venus is now focused more on Doing the Right […]
