The sparkle of this week’s Leo New Moon

artist unknown?

by Lynn Hayes   The next few days offer an opportunity for the heart to open as the Sun and Moon align in Leo, a kiss of magic to open up the heart.  The energy of Leo encourages us to return to the simplicity of childhood – to witness and find joy in the simplest things and share that joy with others.

While the Sun represents the physical heart, the Moon represents the emotional heart.  How we protect ourselves, how we express our feelings, the level of comfort we feel with the emotions that flow through us every moment of the day – all of these things live in the realm of the Moon.  In Leo, the Moon becomes more dramatic and more easily able to find expression for the inner language of the soul and at the New Moon on August 8th at 9:50 am EDT/1:50 pm UTC the two combine for a burst of Leo sparkle.  Mercury, planet of the mind, is also in Leo right now and trines the new planet Eris – this feels a bit to me like the reasoning out of a Rubik’s cube in which the small details lead to a big transformation.

The Sun is the most powerful force in our planetary system, and the Sun is in its own sign of Leo where it has the strongest force of radiance, illuminating the darkness and shining light into the unconscious.  This New Moon is tightly squared (90 degree aspect) by Uranus, the planet of radical personal independence to force a decision or course of action that will set free something which has been repressed or stifled.  Leo is a fixed sign and like all fixed signs, it doesn’t accept change or […]

This Scorpio New Moon will urge us out of our comfort zone

art by Corinazone on Deviant Art

The New Moon in Scorpio is a SuperMoon (™Richard Nolle), meaning that the Moon is at its closest point to earth (perigee).  We usually think of a SuperMoon as being a big full moon in the sky, but a New Moon can also be a SuperMoon, or my favorite, a perigee syzygy.  At these times the Sun, Moon and Earth are in alignment.

The New Moon is often shown as a sliver of a crescent, but it is actually the darkest point of the lunar cycle. The New Moon occurs when the Moon conjoins the Sun and the solar light completely obscures the lunar, leaving us in darkness. But it is in that darkness that the first rays of light can be seen, and in Scorpio, the sign of passion and intensity, we seek the Truth that exists where life and death meet. This New Moon offers us an opportunity to face the darkness and discover our own Truth – to strip ourselves of any falseness and pledge to live in that Truth. New Moons begin a new cycle, and in Scorpio the challenge is to confront our emotional fears without becoming enmeshed in the story.

This New Moon is full of potent planetary alignments to intensify its effect.  The Sun and Moon harmonize in a sextile to the Capricorn stellium (Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn) to aid in the rebuilding of new scaffolding to help support us as we discover new pathways to move forward in stressful times.  The asteroid Pallas is in there too, shining a light of wisdom to guide the way.  Mercury, planet of the mind, is also in Scorpio to aid […]

From the advice column: Why have the past few years been so hard?

astrological adviceQ:

For the past 5 years, my life has had SO many problems – life and health.  Almost as if the Universe keeps saying – “But wait – am throwing THIS in your lifepath – let’s see how you handle this one.”

Financial (bankruptcy in 2013), relationships strains, and a lot of health issues/problems – 5 surgeries in different parts of my body in 5 years and just got thrown another two more that I will have to deal with in the very near future – (the plethora of medical expenses are greatly affecting our finances)

I am a good person – caring, compassionate, helpful and kind; I take care of myself – exercise, eat right and organic, no drinking, drugs and a glass or two of red wine a week –

What is it in my chart that is causing all of this and when will this start easing up?  Or, am I instead of looking at my ‘golden years’ going be be looking at my ‘lead years’?

A:

Although you say that  things have been particularly difficult in the past five years, I suspect that your life has not been easy in general.  Your chart shows an optimistic ascendant and Moon, both in Sagittarius, but difficult Saturn is putting pressure on your Sun, and Pluto (intense transformation) is a part of that dynamic as well.   Saturn and Pluto are the astrological heavyweights, so when they both conflict with the Sun it generally suggests a life where things are difficult and intense, but also very transformative.

Saturn is the apex of a “Yod” – a “finger of fate” aspect in your chart, which echoes the importance of Saturn in the chart.  Saturn is a difficult ally – he puts obstacles […]

The astrology of 2012

A portion of this article was posted in 2011.

The Mayan calendar is usually said to end on December 21, 2012, but that date seems to have little relevance to the actual Mayan calendar, although it has come to bear great mythological significance for the current age.  According to that great source of modern wisdom Wikipedia:

In 1975, the ending of b’ak’tun 13 became the subject of speculation by several New Age authors, who asserted it would correspond with a global “transformation of consciousness”. In Mexico Mystique: The Coming Sixth Age of ConsciousnessFrank Waters tied Coe’s original date of December 24, 2011,[d] to astrology and the prophecies of the Hopi,[42] while both José Argüelles (in The Transformative Vision)[43] and Terence McKenna (in The Invisible Landscape)[44][45] discussed the significance of the year 2012, but not a specific day. It was only in 1983, with the publication of Robert J. Sharer‘s revised table of date correlations in the 4th edition of Morley’s The Ancient Maya,[d] that each became convinced that December 21, 2012, had significant meaning. By 1987, the year in which he organized the Harmonic Convergence event, Arguelles was using the date December 21, 2012 in The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology.[46][47] He claimed that on August 13, 3113 BC the Earth began a passage through a “galactic synchronization beam” that emanated from the center of our galaxy, that it would pass through this beam during a period of 5200 tuns (Maya cycles of 360-days each), and that this beam would result in “total synchronization” and “galactic entrainment” of individuals “plugged […]

Dick Cheney’s Dark Side

Dick Cheney’s Dark Side is Showing

(Washington Post article, November 7 2005)

The birthchart of Dick Cheney shows an individual who possesses the potential to do great things. His chart contains a highly unusual number of aspects between planets that have powerful implications for an individual. There’s a T-square, a Grand Trine, a Kite, a Yod, and a Mystic Rectangle—an unprecedented number of aspect formations in my experience. What does all this mean?

Mr. Cheney is an Aquarian, ruled by Uranus. Uranus is the idealist, the Utopian thinker. The god Uranus, fearing his overthrow by his children, ate them one by one when they were born. The dark side of Uranus is the willingness to sacrifice the individual for the sake of the ideal society.

Cheney’s chart shows Saturn conjunct Jupiter in Taurus – the voice of doubt (Saturn) conjunct the voice of confidence (Jupiter) in the sign of stability. A keyword for Taurus is perseverance; like the bull, Taurus never waivers in its slow but steady march toward security. Saturn and Jupiter are both square to Cheney’s Sun, showing a difficult combination of narcissism (Jupiter/Sun) with an insecure nature (Saturn/Sun). Virgo is rising in his chart, indicating a man who is serious about his work and tends to shun the spotlight.

Cheney is not a romantic man; with Venus in Capricorn he is very practical about matters of the heart. Perhaps this is why his wife is writing lesbian fiction, but that’s another story… His Sagittarian Mars gives him a longing for freedom and adventure and is square to his Moon, indicating someone with a strong temper and irritable nature.

That moon is in Pisces, a difficult place for an Aquarian. Aquarius is dry and airy […]
