The shooting of Trayvon Martin has made national headlines in the United States and in a country that likes to think of itself as being “beyond race” this story has brought the matter of racial bias and injustice to the front page of American news.
George Zimmerman was arrested yesterday just as Mars, planet of aggressive force, changed direction to turn direct. Because this case has had so much impact on the American discussion I wanted to see if there were any significant connections between the charts of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin and the generally accepted chart for the US, the Sagittarius rising “Sibly” chart.
In order to assess the effect these individuals are having on the evolution of the United States I examined the progressed charts for all of the players using the information available without accurate birth times. Trayvon Martin’s progressed Saturn was exactly quincunx the progressed Moon in the US chart, demonstrating the challenge (Saturn) to the emotions (Moon) of Americans in a struggle that, like the quincunx aspect, has no real way of achieving resolution. Both progressed Mars and Jupiter in Trayvon’s chart are trine Progressed Chiron in the US chart, motivating the desire (Mars) to raise up painful old wounds (Chiron) so that they can be healed and some meaning (Jupiter) found from the situation. And Trayvon’s progressed Neptune, illusion and mystery, conjoins the US progressed South Node (karmic matters), with his progressed Uranus (shocking events) sitting right on the US Pluto (revelation of secrets and the principle of destruction).
George Zimmerman’s progressed chart also has interesting and potentially significant relationships to the US chart. In the US progressed chart itself, progressed Sun is in an exact square to progressed Uranus which suggests an event that comes out of the blue to change the country forever. Zimmerman’s progressed Uranus is exactly opposite the US progressed Uranus and squares the US progressed Sun, suggesting that he is the instrument of this sudden event. His progressed Pluto is exactly square to the US progressed Pluto, which again ties into the intensity of his connection to a major transformation in the culture of the United States. And while we don’t know his Moon placement without an accurate birth time, the progressed Moon using a noon time is exactly conjunct US progressed Mars and opposite US progressed Chiron. It is the workings of his emotional world (his progressed Moon) that is stimulating the necessity of the US to force the healing of old and unspoken wounds as represented by Chiron.
Mars and Chiron in the progressed chart of the United States have been in a dance for a long time. The two first opposed each other in 1985, with that dance beginning several years earlier as Ronald Reagan took office and arguably began dividing the country into conservative and liberal. Without getting into a whole political discussion, it is widely accepted that the economic policies of those times have created the greatest wealth gap of any country in the world today.
The US progressed Mars turned retrograde in 2006-2007 which in my view was a turning point for the US and its military (Mars) dominance in the world. Now that P Mars is approaching the second opposition to the US progressed Chiron (culminating in 2019) the fruits of these economic policies will make themselves known and a battle (Mars) may be necessary in order to heal the wounds (Chiron).
The shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman brings some of these matters into the public eye so that they can be dissected and examined, and hopefully some resolution and healing can occur. George Zimmerman’s progressed lunar nodes are in exact harmony with the US progressed Mars/Chiron, which suggests that he has an important role to play in this national discussion and on some level is just an echo of a larger dynamic in the healing of the greater wound.

It was just reported today that Zimmerman’s judge offered to recuse herself because of her husband’s tie to an attorney who consults for CNN. Is this Pluto or Mars gumming up the works? Hmmm….
Some people are fond of saying “No justice, no peace”. I heard someone else say “No forgiveness, no peace”. It seems to me there has to be both in balance for the miracle of peace to occur.
KaD, injury must be addressed for forgiveness to occur.
I agree. But alot of people in this country are still carrying a grudge about slavery. How does something that happened not in the lifetime of anyone alive get addressed?
KaD, the wealth that the slaves created with their ‘free’ labor was used to build large corporations which still exist today.
I am not talking about reparations but it would be nice if America would at least admit that slavery has enriched many of the elite in this country.
The shooting of an unarmed child with no apparent provocation has nothing to do with slavery, but it does reveal the level if racial distrust that still exists in this country today.
Lynn, I disagree.
The reaction that most whites have had by claiming that Trayvon deserved being killed because he ‘looked’ like a thug is rooted in the guilt and shame that slavery that is still the basis of America’s founding.
There are many whites especially in the South who are related to blacks and that is the main reason they tend to be the most virulent racists and ironically are the ones to become the most upset about inter-racial marriage because it reminds them too much of what their forefathers did to black female slaves.
Also the children that white slaveowners sired by black female slaves were mostly disinherited because they were considered slaves and not members of his legitimate family.
I didn’t mean to go off on a tangent but I thought it needed to be said.
That’s an interesting perspective Roderick. I’m not so sure I share it – I live in the South and the racism that exists in the real south where blacks and whites live together in the same communities is very different than the racism that exists in areas like Florida and the northeast where blacks and whites are separated and have no connection to each other. My sister told me this saying: “In the north they don’t care how big they get as long as they don’t get too close and in the south they don’t care how close they get as long as they don’t get too big.” It’s hard to imagine a white man mistaking a young black man for a thug just because he’s black in the community where I live.
In much the same way that teachers are frustrated in the school where I work over boys wearing pants sagging to show their boxers, there are conflicting explanations and opinions over issues of race and perception. The hoodie is a significant element here. Some, but not all, students adopt sagging fully aware of the message of rebellion and symbolic ties to prison life and abuse. Others are purely following fashion, more or less oblivious. Same with the hoodie. For some, it grants anonymity and a form of protection, for others it is pure fashion. Those seeking the former may hide behind a hoodie out of self defense and desire for solitude, even in the classroom. My students love it; some do it to identify with peers; others because it is comforting to inside of that hoodie; others are criminals who hide behind it to stay out of sight. Many are strongly attached to wearing it. It’s not just a matter of color. Lest we ever forget: Perception is not necessarily reality.
